Scotts Head Public School Newsletter

Term 3 | Week 5 | 18 August 2020

Principal's Column

Hello, Giinagay, Hai

In this week's newsletter I discuss disturbing statistics regarding the mainstreaming of pornography.  I urge every parent to discuss this topic with your children.  Below are links and information regarding pornography.

SHPS Athletics Carnival

The school athletics carnival is on this Friday.  A reminder parents/carers are not able to attend.

There is NO canteen available this year.  Students will need to bring lunch and recess.  Students will also need to bring water bottles and a hat.

The school bus will drop off and pick up at the oval.  All students are asked to go to the oval.  The school will be closed.  All staff will be attending the carnival.

Photos and videos will be taken of children competing and will appear in next week's newsletter.  I am sure it will be another fantastic carnival.

Thanks, yaarri yaraang, terima kasih.

Exposure to Pornography

The Office of the eSafety Commissioner’s research shows that when it comes to their children being online, exposure to pornography was the fourth topmost online risk for Australian parents of children aged 2 to 17.

Many parents are unaware of how pervasive pornography has become, the nature of the material young people see or how it is affecting young people’s sexual understandings and experiences.

The main message is for all parents is to check your children’s online activity. The frightening statistic is that many children over ten have been exposed to some form of online pornography, either accidentally or actively seeking out these sites.

Talk to your children about pornography and what to do if they receive inappropriate images or messages. Conversation starters to help talk to children and young people about the reality of pornography. The internet has transformed the way in which pornography is accessed. Today’s pornography is violent, graphic and often portrays distorted gender roles. Children and young people with access to the internet on any device – at home or in any of our community spaces with wifi - are at risk of exposure.

69% of parents believe educating their children about pornography is essential as their potential exposure is highly likely.

77% see themselves as responsible for providing this education in the home, yet less than half reported having actually spoken to their children about pornography.

Home Learning Parent Survey

We are curious about the impact of COVID-19 during Semester 1, 2020 on our staff, students and families. The Home Learning Parent Reflections survey will assist us to document your thoughts, and look for any information that may help us in the future. We will look at the data together as a staff and community when the collection is finished and a summary made. Thank you for assisting us to reflect on a new and better "normal" and inform our future planning. Please complete the survey by clicking on the following link:

Book Fair and Book Parade – Week 6 Friday 28 August

To celebrate Book Week (22-28 August 2020) we will be holding our annual Book Fair this year but it will be much different to previous years. Due to the current Covid-19 restrictions we are unable to have non-essential parents/carers on site. This year we will be setting up the Book Fair in the LLLC and students will fill out wish lists of the books that they like. We are aiming to take lots of photos so parents/carers don’t feel like they missed out!

We will also be holding a Book Parade where students (and staff!) dress up as their favourite book character.

Mobile Dental Van

The Mid North Coast Local Health District Primary School Mobile Dental Program is back up and running at our school this term. The mobile dental van will be here at SHPS for a few more weeks but it’s not too late for your child to be seen. Please have your consent form to the office by Friday 21 August. If you’d like a consent form, please see the office.

Thursday is Library Day

Every student will have the opportunity to go to the library each Thursday. Please make sure your child has a library bag and brings it to school each Thursday.

School Absences

Students are asked to stay at home if unwell.  If your child is unwell at school, they will be sent home. Parents/carers need to either ring, email, use our Skoolbag app or send a note on the student's return to let the school know why their child is not at school.  The school needs to be notified every time a child is absent from school.

If a student is unwell for 3 days the child must obtain a medical certificate which should be forwarded to the school on the student's return.

With the current Covid-19 situation, if a child is unwell they should attend a medical practice early in case a Covid test is required.  Students are unable to come back to school until results have been received.  This can be up to 3 days.
