SUTTON PUBLIC SCHOOL

October 28th - Week 3

From the Principal

150th Day of Celebration

Though COVID restrictions put celebrations on hold last year, staff and students from past and present, and the wider community, came together to celebrate Sutton Public School’s 150th anniversary on Saturday 22nd October.

The BBQs were fired up for sausage sizzles, the cake stall was full to the brim with goodies and the memorabilia marking this special occasion sold like hotcakes. A wonderful display of the school archives highlighted major events and achievements celebrating the amazing milestone of a century and a half of learning at the school.

Special guest Aunty Matilda House welcomed guests to the traditional Ngambri and Ngunnawal lands on which Sutton Public School stands. Mr Daniel Rattigan, Director Educational Leadership (Relieving) and past principal Jenny Priest joined the celebrations.

Stories and connections are what brings events like this to life. We were fortunate to have so many generations of local families return to school sharing memories from the past. Our 150th celebrations are now to be recorded in the school archives, remembering those who have shaped the school over its 150-year history as we look forward to the future of our much-valued school in the country.

- think about what it means to be a good friend to others

- look out to include someone new in the playground and make a new friend.

Preparing for 2023 - staff changes and student enrolments

Congratulations to Miss Gemma Hawkins on her permanent appointment to Queanbeyan West Public School commencing Term 1, 2023.  Miss Hawkins has made a wonderful contribution to Sutton Public School in her role as relieving Assistant Principal and Stage 3 class teacher.  She will be greatly missed but we congratulate her on her promotion and wish her all the best at her new school.

Next year we will welcome Ms Erin Casey to the executive team at Sutton Public School in a new, non-teaching executive role,  Assistant Principal Curriculum and Instruction. Ms Casey will join us from Term 1 2023.  We will keep you informed of any further changes in staffing towards the end of the year as we finalise student numbers and class structure for 2023.

We ask that any family moving on to new locations or educational settings notify us as soon as possible.

Enrolments in 2023

Our Kindergarten students for 2023 have completed their activity mornings.  Over the past two weeks, each new students has met with their 'buddy' to work in the classroom and begin to know what 'big school' will be like.

We ask that any family moving on to new locations or educational settings notify us as soon as possible as we are beginning to form classes for K-6 for 2023.

Book Fair!

Our popular Scholastic Book Fair will be held once again from November Wednesday 9th - Friday 11th, and Wednesday 15th - Friday 18th.

How the Fair works:

  • Students will browse the fair in their library class time, or before school 9am-9.20am & after school 3.10pm - 3.30pm (parents/carers are invited to browse before and after school with their child)
  • Students will complete a 'wishlist' (to be handed out in class)
  • After 'consulting' and discussing the wishlist with their families, payment will be made online to Scholastic
  • Students will bring their wishlist back in with payment receipt where selected books are collected from the fair

*Books will be ordered if that item sells out

This event allows our students to choose books for themselves. Most books are by Australian authors and often new releases.

Happy Reunions at our 150th Celebration

Stories and connections are what brings events like this to life. We were fortunate to have so many generations of local families return to school sharing memories from the past. Peter Cartwright represented the Cartwright family. John Cartwright was a member of the first School committee who requested a school be set up in 1871. Peter told us his principal was Bruce Boller. A show of hands showed a few others attending from the same era.

Since 1880, many members of the Darmody family have attended the school. We were fortunate to hear stories from Josie Collier, nee Darmody, the oldest past student present at our celebration. Clare and Terri, her sisters also attended. Displayed in the archive exhibition, we found the page of Josie Darmody’s attendance from 1937 to 1944. The silver cup, she held proudly in her hand on Saturday had been won at the Combined School Sports at Gundaroo in 1938. Josie kindly donated her cup to the school as another addition to our archives.

The principal during Josie’s time at the school was Ainslie Hobson. We heard from Wendy and Robyn, his daughters who attended the school from 1942 – 1948. They had fond memories of Sutton winters at the Principal’s Residence, now Country Bumpkins, before electricity was brought to Sutton! Electricity was brought to the village in the early 1950 through the persistence of another past student of the school, Phil Hardy.

We heard a story from the Kershaw family. Laurie, and his sister Deidre and brother Arthur attended the school in the 1960 and 70. In the archives was a photograph of the three siblings at the school’s centenary in 1971. Both Laurie and Deidre’s grandchildren are at our school. One of the granddaughters who was in Year 6 in 2021 has traced the family back to two former principals; Lizzie Whyte (1880 – 1885) who married James Williams (1885 – 1894).

In the old 1924 classroom we heard many discussions between Bingleys, Kershaws, Reads and Reids about where the fireplace and library used to be! All agreed, the classroom today, looked quite different with its interactive whiteboard and with the bell, flagpole and bird bath outside now moved to other locations in the school!

Stories from our Recent Past

Speeches will be placed into a time capsule, alongside a booklet created by the senior students of 2021 to commemorate the school’s sesquicentenary and photos from the day of celebrations. The time capsule along with a commemorative plaque will be installed during the final weeks of this term.

Selective high school placement process for placement in Year 7 in 2024

Selective high school placement process for placement in Year 7 in 2024

Selective high schools cater for academically gifted students of high potential who may otherwise be without sufficient classmates at their own academic standard. Selective high schools help these students to learn by grouping them with students of similar ability and by using specialised teaching methods.

Applications for Year 7 entry to selective high schools in 2024 open on 18 October 2022. Applications will close on 16 November 2022. The due date is strictly observed. Requests for late applications will be approved only under very specific and well-documented circumstances.

Find information about the application and placement process and apply online at:  https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-7.

All candidates are required to sit the Selective High School Placement Test to be held on Thursday 4 May 2023.

The online application dashboard enables parents to log in to make updates and add attachments even after an application is submitted. Parents also communicate directly with the Selective Education Unit through the system’s messages feature.

Parents having difficulty completing or submitting an application, should contact the Selective Education Unit through their application dashboard or, if unable to do so, by email ssu@det.nsw.edu.au.

Last day of Term 4 is Friday 16 December 2022

As we near the end of the year, I want to thank you for your ongoing support and notify you of a date change for the last day of Term 4 classes.

Students will now finish school on Friday 16 December 2022.

This is due to an additional School Development Day announced for staff across NSW public schools.

School Development Days allow our staff to participate in professional learning that was put on hold due to COVID-19 staffing pressures and plan ahead for 2023 to ensure we meet the needs of our students.

With this change, we ask that you arrange alternative care for your child on Monday 19 December.

While there will be no classes on Monday 19 December, if you cannot arrange alternative care for your child, we will provide minimal supervision at school.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the school.

Swimming - K - 2
