St Joseph's Catholic Primary School Wandal Newsletter

Bernadette Brennan - Principal

The school has been buzzing the last two afternoons into the evening as families attended Parent Teacher Interviews. These have been a great opportunity to check-in with classroom teachers and have an open conversation about the students and their progress in learning. Face to face meetings encourage connection between school and home to engage in each child's learning and wellbeing. We want all our children to thrive and flourish throughout the school year and when we maintain communication between home and school this is improved. I encourage any family who was unable to attend an interview to reach out to your child's teacher and build the connection to support your child.

Thank you to all our classroom teachers and inclusive education teachers who made themselves available to meet with families. I am grateful for their time and appreciate that they have been well supported by their own families, including extended family who have cared for their children to allow the interviews to happen.

Have a great week

Bernadette Brennan

Gospel Reflection

The story of the man born blind is a perfect choice for the Lenten season. During this season we are invited once again to open our eyes to Jesus; to step out of darkness and into the light; to look towards the future with hope and not despair. When we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus at the Easter vigil, we celebrate the coming of the Light of the World into our lives. This annual call to turn away from darkness and walk in the light is a powerful and poetic call to focus our lives on the way of Jesus.

Enrolment Ceremony and Penance Workshop

At this weekend’s Masses (25/26 March), there will be a special ‘Enrolment Ceremony’ for your children in the Sacramental Program.  We encourage you to come to one of the Masses listed below and present yourself to a Sacramental team member at the front door.  You will need to collect a ‘Promise Card’ from them which is handed in as part of the ceremony.  After the communion prayer, you and your child will be invited forward to the Sanctuary (near the Altar) for the ritual. Children will receive a gift of a Mass Missal which may be used when they come to Mass. It would be helpful if everyone could wear a name tag if you have one.

Prep – Reflection on our first school Mass

We had our first school Mass on Monday to celebrate the Feast Day of St Joseph the husband. Seminarian Peter used a teddy bear named Joseph in his reflection and explained how the teddy was like St Joseph.

Joseph has a bow tie because he is a worker like St Joseph. Joseph has big ears so he can hear when people are hurt and help them. St Joseph helped people when they were hurt or sad. He has big paws so that he can protect people, just like St Joseph protected Jesus. Joseph has eyes so that he can see when people are lost like Jesus was lost in the temple. We were very excited when Peter said Joseph could live at our school.

Holy Week Prayer Celebrations

Holy Week commences with Palm Sunday on the 2 April. We remember and re-enact the events which occur for and to Jesus in the approach to celebrating the most important feast for the Christian faith – the rising to a new life of Jesus at Easter.  Each class will remember and present a prayer reflection of Jesus during Holy Week. This will be presented in the order of events that occurred historically. Parents are invited to attend the presentation of their child/children’s class/classes.

Learning Festival

Parents and Caregivers, Our learning festival is happening next week!  This is a really, really, really big deal!  Here at Wandal, we have a tradition of celebrating learning, and our festivals are an important part of that.  I would like to extend to each of you an invitation to come along – either to join us at a parent workshop, or to drop in to one of our student workshops with your child.  Our festivals are lots of fun, and are a chance for all of us to enjoy the wonder of learning together.  Another important part of the festival is your engagement through discussion.  You children will have experienced a range of amazing learning experiences, and we would love you to encourage them to share their learning stories with you.  Finally, a learning festival is a lot of work.  Teachers have gone above and beyond to get fabulous activities ready – let them know how much you appreciate their efforts!

Thanks, Janette
