Caves Beach Public School Newsletter

Term 2 Week 2: 1st May - 5th May 2023

Principal's Blog

Welcome to Term 2 Caves Beach Public School for 2023!

I’d like to officially welcome Ms Alana Folwell to our CBPS staff. Alana has been appointed as our Assistant Principal Support and will be working with our students in K6R and K6D.

Thank you to Mrs Dallaway, Mrs Nebauer and Ms Heap for attending the Anzac Day march and assisting our students. It was wonderful to see so many of our CBPS students, in their uniforms, to represent our school at this important community ceremony.

Make My Day

K/1P must be busy as last week I had three students share their work. When I was visiting their room on Thursday Landon from Yr 1 eagerly showed me the sentence he had written. He also showed me his favourite page of “Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive The Bus” the book they are reading together. On Friday Luna andIzabelle came to share their sentences. Both girls are doing a great job reading and writing and they are only in kindergarten!!

Absentee Information

Education in New South Wales is compulsory for all children between the ages of six years and below the minimum school leaving age of 17 years. The Education Act 1990 requires that parents ensure their children of compulsory school age are enrolled at, and regularly attend school, or are registered with the NSW Education and Standards Authority for home schooling.

When children do not attend school, they miss vital information, their learning routine is broken and they can lose confidence, which can affect the building of friendships.

If your child has to be absent from school for any reason, please tell your child's teacher, the school office, phone, email, Skoolbag or send a written note as soon as possible, or within seven days.

If your child arrives at school late they need to be accompanied by an adult and report to the school office.

Once children are enrolled parents are legally required to send them to school every day that the school is open for instruction or participation in school activities, such as sports days.

Failure to explain an absence within seven days is recorded as an unjustified absence. School will inform parents via SMS on a daily basis, if a student is absent from school without explanation.

What should I do if our family is going on holiday in school time?

Families should remember that because school attendance is compulsory holidays should be arranged during school vacations. If this is not possible, parents/carers are required to contact the school office and complete an Extended Leave application form at least 10 days prior to the intended absence. Applications can also be completed online. Applications are not automatically granted but considered on an individual basis.

When to get help?

The department has implemented a number of attendance programs to support parents in ensuring their children attend school regularly. If you are having difficulty getting your child to attend school regularly, please contact the school office for assistance.

 Basic Safety Rules

Pupils walking to school must use the supervised crossing in front of the High School when crossing Park Avenue.

Primary children ONLY may ride bikes to school and ALL children riding a bike to school MUST wear a safety helmet. If any child in K-2 wants to ride, they must be under the direct supervision of a Parent/Carer (not older siblings). All bikes need to be left neatly parked in the school bike racks at the rear of the staffroom.

Bicycles must NOT be ridden or scootered in the school grounds or along the footpath from Park Avenue.

Children riding scooters must follow the same rules as bike riders.

No riding of skateboards.

Pupils are not to run on concrete areas.

No child is to leave the school playground without written permission from parents.

Class of the Week

1/2N

Last term, 1/2N created their own characters out of kitchen utensils. The students had to give each character their own personalities and characteristics.

1/2N loved the story ‘Spoon’ and this gave them the inspiration for their own unique characters. The characters then had to talk to each other in a conversation.

We hope you like our characters!

Check-in Assessment for Year 4 and Year 6

Dear parents and carers,

During Term 2, students will participate in the Check-in assessment.

The Check-in assessment is a NSW Department of Education online literacy and numeracy assessment available to support schools to assess and monitor student learning.

The assessment can supplement existing school practices to identify how students are performing in literacy and numeracy and to help teachers tailor their teaching more specifically to student needs. Students with a disability may receive the same level of support during the assessment they would normally receive in the classroom.

·         The assessment will be scheduled for our Year 4 and Year 6 students during Weeks 4 – 7.

·         All students complete a reading assessment and a numeracy assessment.

Grow Your Mind

As we return to school for another wonderful term, it is important to remember to look after our mental health and use our Grow Your Mind animals.

This fortnight is the SIFTING SOOTY who helps us avoid distractions and remain focused on achieving our goals. To do this we need to do one thing at a time, make a plan and use all our senses to engage with what we are learning.

Introduction to Understanding Dyslexia

Dyslexia is a specific learning disorder in reading. People with dyslexia finds it difficult to read accurately and fluently and they are often poor spellers. These reading difficulties impact word recognition and oral language comprehension. It is regarded as neurobiological condition where children and adults with dyslexia often have a family history of reading and/or spelling difficulties.
