Term 4 Week 2 2020

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Welcome back! Term four is notorious for flying by and presenting us with end-of-year craziness before we have time to blink! Despite some COVID restrictions remaining, there is still so much to do and so much to look forward to.

We were delighted to be given the green light to go ahead with Kindergarten transition. Old Bar School has always provided our incoming students and their families with a comprehensive orientation resulting in happy, settled and confident children at the beginning of the school year. From week 4 our elected ‘buddies’ will visit preschools to meet their little champions. In the following weeks, pre-schoolers will be welcomed into classrooms for a real taste of ‘big’ school and further opportunities to bond with their buddies. Such exciting times! I must give a big ‘shout out’ to Ms Ashlie Biega and her team for the time and effort they have put into organising this great program. If you have any questions or concerns about our transition program, please call the school and speak with Ashlie.

This week you would have received the term 4 school planner indicating major events and commitments for the next 8 weeks. Unfortunately, we are still unable to have parents in the school but we are making every effort to livestream and/or video events to be enjoyed from home. Rebecca Rosen, our School/Community Liaison Officer, is doing an amazing job of keeping parents informed and connected via our much watched Facebook page. She scoots around the school taking photos, talking to students and documenting as much as possible to share with families. Thanks Bec!

In week 4, we will be celebrating NAIDOC week. Our very active Aboriginal Education Committee, consisting of students, staff and parents have planned a week of fun cultural activities to be enjoyed by all classes. We are fortunate to have Biripi Elder, Uncle Mick Saunders visiting our school each second Friday to work closely with stage 3 students and teachers. He brings to life the stories, music and language of our local tribe and has made a lasting impression on us all. Thank you Uncle Mick.

Intensive swimming lessons for year 2 will proceed in weeks 7 and 8. The Nabiac pool is not open to the general public and will be used exclusively by our group in the designated time-frame for the duration of the lessons. We are so fortunate to have this facility available to us. The only cost to parents will be the bus fare which can be paid in instalments if requested.

Have you seen our new notice board at the front of the school? It hasn’t yet been connected to our technology but this should be completed in the coming days. It will provide our school community with notices about school events, inspirational sayings, reminders and much more! Watch this space…

Thank you to the 9 attendees at our P&C meeting last night. Using Zoom to stay connected is becoming second nature and has its advantages. Your P&C President, Michelle Cherry, is doing a phenomenal job! If you aren’t already a member of our P&C, please consider joining. Your voice, your opinion and your ideas are always welcomed and respected. This IS the forum for having your say and supporting your children and our community. At last night’s meeting it was decided to direct raised funds to the installation of much desired playground equipment. So, jump on board, have a say and make a difference for your children and the children in years to come.

Have a wonderful week!

Intention to apply for a selective high school in 2022

Selective high schools cater for academically gifted students with high potential who may otherwise be without sufficient classmates at their own academic standard. Selective high schools help these students to learn by grouping them with students of similar ability, and by using specialised teaching methods.

Applications for selective high school placement are considered mainly on the basis of the Selective High School Placement Test results and school assessment scores. The Selective High School Placement Test will be held on Thursday 11 March 2021.

If you would like to have your child considered for Year 7 selective high school entry in 2022, you need to apply on the internet using a valid email address (not the student’s email address).

Detailed instructions on how to apply online will be available in late September 2020 at https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-7.

The application website opens at that link on 6 October 2020 and closes on 9 November 2020. You must apply before the closing date.

There are no paper application forms. If you do not have internet access, you could apply at a public library. If you have a disability that prevents you from using a computer, you can contact the Team for assistance after 6 October 2020.

You must submit only ONE application for each student.
