St Pat's News

November 27, 2019

At St Patrick’s Parish Primary School we hold the care, safety and wellbeing of children and young people as a central and fundamental responsibility of our school.

From The RE Leader - Peter Sanderson

This Sunday is the first Sunday of Advent, the beginning of a new church year. Each year the Catholic Church gives us an incredible opportunity for a powerful encounter with Jesus. In her genius, the Church invites us during Advent to take a step back and look at who we are, what we are doing, and where Jesus fits into our lives.

Jesus came into this world at that first Christmas for you, to bring meaning and deep satisfaction into your life, to fill you with lasting joy, and ultimately to bring you to eternal happiness with him in heaven. That’s what we celebrate at Christmas. Are you ready?

Week 1, Hope

Dear Jesus, you are the hope in our messy world.

This Advent, help us slow down, listen to your voice, and focus on what’s really important.

We place our hope in you as we prepare our hearts to celebrate your birth on Christmas. Amen.

School-led Parish Mass

A reminder to families that this Sunday the school staff are rostered for the ministries at our parish mass. Mass will be at 10.30am at St Patrick’s Church. On this day we will be celebrating the 1st Sunday in the season of Advent, the season of preparation and anticipation leading up to Christmas. We invite all families to join us at mass on this day.

Mini Vinnies News

The Mini Vinnies group are running two campaigns during Advent to help our school community focus on doing something for people in need in the lead up to Christmas.

  • Food Share Christmas Appeal - Families are invited to make donations of food to our Christmas Hampers in the corridor outside the Art Room windows. See the flyer later in this newsletter for suggestions as to what kinds of food can be donated.

  • SchoolAid 2019 Bushfire Appeal - On Monday 9th December the Mini Vinnies will hold a fundraising day to raise money to support the SchoolAid Bushfire Relief Appeal. Students are invited to come to school dressed to fit in with the theme of Summer Fun. The Mini Vinnies are asking for a gold coin donation for the privilege of dressing up and they will also be running a cake stall on the day. Further information will appear in next week’s newsletter.

We urge you to discuss with your families how you might support these campaigns as a way of preparing for the celebration of Christmas.

From The Principal - Sue Paulka

Dear Parents, Parishioners, Carers, Staff & Students,

Our sympathy is extended to Lachlan, Angus and Xavier Down on the death of their grandmother and great grandmother last week.

 School‑led Parish Mass

Our school‑led parish mass will be held this coming Sunday, December 1st, at 10.30am at the church. This is the first Sunday of Advent and we invite all school families to be part of this Mass. Our mass of thanksgiving for the school year will be held on Thursday December 13th at 10.00am at St Patrick’s Church. All parents, family members and friends are invited to join us.

School Performance

Everyone is getting very excited about our performance tonight.

The performance starts at 7pm and goes for approximately 2 hours. Please ensure all children are present by 6.50pm. Doors will open at 6.30pm.

While parents are free to take photos/video of their own children at the performance, please be aware that as per our Digital Media Policy and Child Safe Policy, uploading any photos or video to social media that has children other than your own in it, without their permission, is not allowed. It is important to remember that not everyone is happy for their child’s image to be made public.

Transition Day

Our whole school transition day will be held on Tuesday, December 10th. Our students will spend the day in their 2020 classes with their new teachers and we wish our Year 6 students all the best as they head to their secondary schools for the day.

Carols, Awards and Graduation Night

Our annual Carols, Awards and Graduation night will be held on Thursday, December 12th, beginning at 7.00pm. This night is for all school families, not just our Year 6 families. All classes will be involved in singing a carol and it gives us the opportunity, as a school community, to farewell our Year 6 students and families, as well as other staff, students and families who may be leaving the school. Students need to wear their summer uniform.

School Advisory Council

We congratulate Rebecca Greene and Andrew Prosser on their appointments to the School Advisory Council for 2020/21. We thank them both for their willingness to accept these roles and we look forward to the knowledge and wisdom they will bring  to our team.

Moyne Try-Athlon

Congratulations to all our Yr 3- 6 students who competed in the Moyne Try‑athlon yesterday. It was great to see so many children trying their best and having fun. Thanks to the staff and parents who assisted.

Numeracy testing

Families will receive an email by the end of this week regarding online bookings for our numeracy testing in December.

Emmanuel College School Leaders 2020

It was very exciting to see that former St Patrick’s students were represented in the leadership teams for every year level at Emmanuel college in 2020. I believe it’s a good reflection on our school values and expectations that we are so well represented. Congratulations to Frankie Bant and Oliver Myers (Yr 8), Ted Kelly and Milly Graham (Yr 9),  Isabelle Dix and Bree Fox (Yr 10), Nicola Giblin and Ava Pierce (Yr 11) and Saul Giblin (Yr 12). We also congratulate Louise Tamer (Yr 10) and Tess Dempsey (Yr 12), who although they didn’t attend St Patrick’s as they didn’t live in Port Fairy at the time, are sisters of current students.

Kind regards,

Sue Paulka

Woolworths Junior Landcare Grant

We’ve been successful with our application for a Woolworths Junior Landcare Grant for our project to reinvigorate our school vegetable garden in Term 1 next year.

St Patrick’s is one of 617 primary schools and early learning centres throughout Australia receiving a Woolworths Junior Landcare grant to help grow our next generation of environmental champions.

The grants are being funded with money made from the sale of the Woolworths recyclable Bag for good™ which was launched in 2018 when the supermarket stopped using single-use plastic bags.

The children and teachers are looking forward to working and learning from this project and we’ll keep you updated on the results.

Weeding Help Needed

We are looking for help weeding some of our gardens at school. Do you have a couple of hours to spare? Maybe you have volunteer points you would like to redeem? If so please bring some gloves and come and see Janine in the office.

No Parking at the School Crossing

In an effort to improve child safety in and around the school crossing, the Moyne Shire has erected a number of "No Standing" signs near the crossing, which means no parking is permitted in the area between the signs. Please be mindful of this when dropping off and picking up your children so that you are not fined.

The office is open from 8.30am - 4.00pm each day.

There is no supervision for students before 8.40am. Teachers use the time prior to the doors opening for setting up for the day, therefore they are not available to supervise students. Students who arrive at school prior to 8.40am need to wait at the side door near the hall until the doors are opened.

The bell for the start of the day rings at 8.55am, any student arriving after this time needs to be signed in using the iPad at the office.

The bell for the end of the day rings at 3.20pm. If for any reason you are going to be later than 3.30pm to collect your child/children, please contact the school office.

Wellbeing

Whole School Positive Behaviour Support System

In 2020 we will be implementing a whole school positive behaviour support system. To introduce this to our students and community we will begin with using the mantra ‘Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be a Learner’.  You will notice that these words will be highly visible in different positions around our school in the coming weeks. These words reflect how we will be guided to behave in all areas of our school. The aim is for all children, staff and parents to be clear on all our behavioural expectations.
