Dernancourt School R-7 Newsletter

24th September, 2020

From the Leadership Team

Whist school has returned to a kind of "normal", we are still living with some COVID -19 restrictions. Unfortunately the following significant events in our community have had to be cancelled for this year:

6th November - Spectators attendance at Sports Day

 December  - School Concert.

While we understand how disappointed some families are about not being able to attend as spectators at Sports Day, after discussions with our student staff agreed  that the strong sentiment of our students needed to be listened to... "a Sports Day with out  our families is better that no Sports Day at all".

Our 2020 Year 7 Graduation Committee has been elected and we are creatively trying to think of a way for us to have an event that fittingly acknowledges and celebrates the R-7 journey of these learners. Our fingers are crossed that by December some further easing of restrictions has occurred and we are able to hold an event with significant adults in the audience.

As this is the last newsletter for term 3 we would like to wish each of you a happy and safe break. We hope that there is sunshine, family, friends and happiness while you rest & recuperate in readiness for Term 4.

School resumes Monday 12th October.

2021 Class Placement Process

We are continuously firming up our numbers for next year. Please inform the school as soon as possible if you know your child/ren will be leaving our school next term or at the end of the year.Early next term we will commence our class placement process by asking students to nominate three students they learn best with and would like to continue working with in 2021. As per our last newsletter if families have any further information they would like us to consider when we construct classes please submit this in writing to Kellie by Friday 16th October 2020. Please do not request a teacher as this is the final part of our process, and we have a high number of contract teachers who we cannot guarantee will be here next year.

Messages from our SRC

Messages from our SRC

An important aspect of school life here at Dernancourt School R-7 is developing student voice and enabling our students to be actively involved in different areas of our school.  We meet regularly and have input into aspects such as improvements to be made to play spaces, organise fundraising events and are active participants in our whole school assemblies. Here are some messages from our senior SRC…

I am very proud to be an SRC because I like being involved in the different activities we do around the school.  This term I presented the SRC report at an assembly and helped garden in the Nature Play Space and Japanese Garden.

Zara Freund SRC for P11

This year the SRC have created a PowerPoint which is presented at each assembly.  Our SRC assembly team set up the laptop and microphone and we take it in turns to announce the ‘STAR’ class and draw the ‘Eco-Warrior’ raffle. I wanted to be an SRC because I want to be more responsible and do more jobs to help make our school a better place.

Burak Aksoy SRC for P11

This semester we have been involved in lots of gardening work in the junior primary garden and Japanese Garden.  We have pulled up weeds and grass and purchased rakes and shovels with money through our fundraising.  Being a part of the SRC team has changed me for the better and given me opportunities to demonstrate my leadership skills.

Ramsay Stratford SRC for P12

Breakfast club started many years ago and was an SRC initiative.  Jane spoke with us and explained how it started and it made me want to be a part of it. I volunteered to work with Jane in the mornings and it made me feel proud because I was a part of something that helped our school community.

Kiyara Anashya SRC for P8

This year SRC introduced a new bin system to reduce our waste to landfill.  We bought 3 new bins and clearly labelled each one so each student can make a choice to recycle their waste instead of sending it to landfill. It has been great watching my class mates use the correct bin and honoured to be an SRC.
