Welcome Back

I trust that everyone has had a fantastic holiday period and has returned to school ready for the challenges of a new year.  A special secondary Assembly was held yesterday and it was great to welcome all our Year 7 students and other students new to our school.  We also had a number of new teachers to introduce - further details about our new staff are listed later in the newsletter.  As was outlined in the Welcome Documents that were sent home to families during the holidays, F-6 staff were conducting individual assessments with their students throughout Thursday and Friday of this week.  Primary classes will commence on Monday.

There have been a number of developments that were announced at the very end of the year that have been finalised throughout the holidays which have enabled us to approach this year with great enthusiasm.  An email received yesterday by the Minister for Education confirmed Nhill College's acceptance into the Primary Maths and Science Specialists initiative.  This initiative will enable us to provide time release for Ms McCartney and Mrs Crouch to receive high quality, targeted professional learning delivered by experts in mathematics, science and educational leadership.  Our focus in this program will be on the further development of our primary maths program.  Mr Charry joins us to help cover Ms McCartney and Mrs Crouch.

Other staffing developments have been made possible by the introduction of the Tutor Learning Initiative.  Three staff members - Mr McDonald, Mrs McDonald and Ms Morris - will be joining us on a part-time basis to support students to catch up on learning they may have missed due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Another development that we have been working to finalise over the holidays is the provision of a teacher from Nhill College to facilitate the Nhill Community Playgroup.  Playgroup will continue to be conducted in the Nhill Early Years Centre on Friday mornings (9.00am - 11.00am), starting on Friday 12th February.  Further details about Playgroup can be found later in this newsletter.

Amendments to the Bushfire At Risk Register have been implemented which rate Nhill College as a Category 4 school, which suggests we may be at risk of grass fires.  As a result, we will be required to close the school on any Code Red days that may be declared.  Once again, further information on this important development are provided later in this edition of the newsletter.

Finally, our new school bus will be delivered to us on Monday.  After almost 20 years of service, it was time to update our old Rosa for a brand new Toyota Coaster.  The bus will be delivered just in time to take our Year 7 students on their to Roses Gap Camp, and it is hoped that it will provide another 20 years of great service to our school.

There is a lot of information that needs to be communicated to parents at this time of year.  Please take the time to read through the Newsletter each week, as it is the school's formal channel of communication.  The Newsletter will be sent out to all Nhill College families via Compass each Friday, and we would like to encourage all families to download the Compass app on your phones.  Anyone not associated with Nhill College can also access the Newsletter via our webpage - nhillcollege.vic.edu.au.  We will continue to place brief announcements on our Facebook page, but more detailed information will always be found in our newsletters.

Congratulations to our 2020 Year 12 Students

With the late release of results by the VCAA, we have had to wait until the first Assembly on Thursday 28th January to acknowledge the achievements of last year's Year 12 cohort.  It was fantastic to be able to welcome these students back on our first day so all students could share in the celebration of their results.  It was also a nice touch to be able to have our current College Captains present the Class of 2020 with their VCE and VCAL Certificates, while the 2020 student leaders were able to perform one last duty by making jumper presentations to the Class of 2021.

As was communicated on our Facebook page over the holidays, the winner of our Highest ATAR Award for 2020 was Mikayla Farmers, with the fantastic score of 97.55.  This is an exceptional result given the disruptions to the 2020 school year caused by COVID-19.

Mikayla was also the recipient of the College Dux Award and the Jayne Godfrey Prize, which is a scholarship - to the amount of $1,000.00, designed to acknowledge the barriers faced by country students who have to relocate to further their studies and encourage them to continue to strive for their best.

The High Achiever Award was the final presentation made at the Assembly.  This is awarded to the student who achieves the highest individual VCE study score (over 40) for the year.  The winner of this award was, unsurprisingly, Mikayla Farmers, for her score of 46 in Food Technology.

Congratulations to all of our Class of 2020 Year 12 students.  We have been very pleased to hear of the Tertiary placements, apprenticeships and full time positions that many of you have already accepted and would like to wish all of you the very best for your future endeavours.

Dux Presentation

Traditionally the previous Dux recipient attends our December Presentation Evening to enlighten the College community as to their experiences after completing Year 12. Unfortunately, due to COVID restrictions, Shanaye was unable to attend this evening or present the Dux award to Mikayla Farmers. However, thankfully she was willing to share with us her experience and pass on her congratulations to Mikayla.

Nhill College 2019 Dux Recipient – Shanaye Rowe

My academic journey certainly has not been linear. I started 2020 with the intention of completing a degree in Civil Engineering and was awarded Deakin University’s most prestigious scholarship, the Vice Chancellor’s Professional Excellence Scholarship. I made wonderful friends while on res and even more memories. Not long after this though I was having a lot of doubts. Doubts about whether a career in engineering would make me happy, doubts about whether I even wanted to be career orientated throughout my early twenties, and doubts about doubting my reasons for having all these doubts! It was a very confusing time for me, and I was starting to understand what Dan Andrews meant when he said these were uncertain times, even though my uncertain times had little to do with the coronavirus.

So I asked myself; what does education really mean? And I was delighted to find that it can also be defined as ‘an enlightening experience’ because that’s what 2020 has been for me. I devoted quarantine to questioning everything in my life and the purpose I served in this universe. As the world slowed down to take a much needed break, it allowed me to reflect more deeply on how I spent my time, the people I surrounded myself with, and the content I exposed myself to.

I learned that not only is a pandemic an unprecedented time, but so are our lives. We’re all doing things that we as individuals have never done or known before. Extraordinary, one of a kind, revolutionary; these are some synonyms of unprecedented, and I think they all describe our existence pretty well. With this in mind, I decided to take this year off university, explore other possibilities and career types through online courses, and begin a chapter of uncertainty and new experiences in Geelong.

So today I encourage you all to think deeply about who you are and what you want to achieve. And this can be anything from academics to sport to practical life experiences. Do you want to be an astronaut, or maybe someone who is actively making a change in society? Do you want happiness and peace? Do you want health and a life full of love? Don’t be afraid of all the possibilities, because believe me you’re allowed to change your mind as you evolve.

All I ask is that each of you be authentic human beings. Choose things that bring you everlasting happiness, work hard but remember if the things you’re striving for don’t bring you peace, its okay to change direction.

In regards to the presentation of the 2020 Year 12 Dux Award I would like to say that Mikayla embodies the qualities and attributes of an authentic individual and there is no doubt in my mind that she will continue to live and apply herself in such a genuine way. Not only is she a bright and intelligent young woman, but she is kind-hearted, compassionate and an all-round vibrant soul. Her academic efforts during a world crisis are to be greatly commended.

Staffing Update

A number of changes have occurred since the end of 2020 from a staffing point of view.  A number of new faces will be joining our staff in 2021 and I would like our wider Nhill College community to join me in welcoming them to our great school.

Ms Shaeleigh McKercher will be teaching secondary Science this year as a replacement for Miss Thomas who has accepted a position in South Australia at Yankalilla.  Ms McKercher is based in Goroke and comes to us after completing a placement here last year as a pre-service teacher.

Mr Dehne Charry joins us as a Primary Specialist Teacher.  Mr Charry comes to us from Burwood East Primary School, and this year he will be working with students in most primary classes at some stage each week.

As mentioned at the end of last year, Mr McDonald will not be taking his own class in 2021.  Instead, he will be taking Mrs Crouch's Year 5-6 class every Wednesday.  He will also taking on a new position as a Tutor on Thursdays and Fridays which will see him working with a number of students across the school.  We have three new Tutors who will be working with students throughout 2021.  As well as Mr McDonald, we would like to welcome Mrs Rebecca McDonald - who has worked with us extensively as a CRT in recent years, as well as Ms Sandra Morris who comes to us with a wealth of experience from Ballarat.

Nhill College Community Playgroup

As was communicated at the end of 2020, Nhill College will be running the Community Playgroup this year.  Nhill College staff will facilitate the Playgroup sessions, which will be held in the Nhill Early Years Centre on Friday mornings from 9.00am - 11.00am.  A gold coin entry is all that it will cost participants, and it is requested that parents also bring a piece of fruit for their child on the day.  We would strongly recommend that all participants are registered with Playgroup Victoria.  A free trial registration option is available, and staff can assist parents with this process.  The first session of Playgroup for 2021 will be held on Friday 12th February.  Due to current COVID-19 arrangements, it is requested that all families interested in coming along to Playgroup contact the Nhill College Office (5391 2111) to register their attendance.  Parents are also welcome to contact the office if they have any questions about Playgroup.

School Procedures for the Bushfire Season

Fire danger ratings and warnings are used in Victoria to provide clear direction on the safest options for preserving life.

Schools and children’s services listed on the DET Bushfire At-Risk Register (BARR) and those at risk of grassfire (Category 4) will be closed when a Code Red fire danger rating day is determined in their Bureau of Meteorology district.  Our school has been identified as being one of those at high bushfire or grassfire risk.

Where possible, we will provide parents with up to four days notice of a potential Code Red day closure by letter via Compass.  A Code Red day will be determined by the Emergency Management Commissioner no later than 1.00 pm the day before the potential closure.  Once we are advised of the confirmation of the Code Red day we will provide you with advice before the end of the school day.

Once confirmed, the decision to close will not change, regardless of improvements in the weather forecast.  This is to avoid confusion and help your family plan alternative care arrangements for your child.  It is also important to note that:

  • No staff will be on site on days where the school is closed due to a forecast Code Red day.
  • School camps will be cancelled if a Code Red fire danger rating day is determined for the Bureau of Meteorology district in which the camp is located.
  • All bus routes that travel through the Code Red area will be cancelled.

On these Code Red days families are encouraged to enact their Bushfire Survival Plan – on such days children should never be left at home alone or in the care of older children.

For those of us living in a bushfire prone area, the Country Fire Authority (CFA) advises that when Code Red days are forecast, the safest option is to leave the night before or early on the morning of the Code Red day.

As part of preparing our school for potential hazards such as fire, we have updated and completed our Emergency Management Plan,

What can parents do?

  • Make sure your family’s bushfire survival plan is up-to-date and includes alternative care arrangements in the event that our school is closed.
  • Ensure we have your current contact details, including your mobile phone numbers.  Keep in touch with us by reading our newsletters and any messages sent home via Compass,
  • Most importantly at this time of year, if you’re planning a holiday or short stay in the bush or in a coastal area, you should check warnings in advance of travel and remain vigilant during your stay.
  • If your child is old enough, talk to them about bushfires and your family’s bushfire survival plan.

Coronavirus (COVID-19) Restrictions Remain in Place

Coronavirus (COVID-19) restrictions remain in place from the commencement of the new school year.  A number of signs have been posted at the main entrances and in prominent places around the school to remind students, staff, parents and visitors of the current requirements.  Some of these posters have been included below.  A summary of the current conditions is as follows:

  • Staying home when unwell, performing regular hand hygiene, and physical distancing where possible remain vitally important behaviours. In circumstances where physical distancing cannot be maintained, face masks are recommended.
  • Individuals aged 12 years and older must always carry a face mask
  • Face masks are recommended, but not mandated, in situations where physical distancing of 1.5 metres cannot be maintained.  Individuals can choose to wear a face mask at any time.
  • Hand sanitiser will be available in all classrooms
  • Density limits do not apply in classrooms and other spaces for the purposes of student use, including corridors and other shared areas
  • Parents and carers are required to maintain 1.5 metres distance between each other as far as practicable at the start and end of the school day
  • To prevent congestion, it is requested that parents do not congregate at the school gates after dropping off/picking up their child.
  • All visitors to school grounds must comply with physical distancing and face mask recommendations
  • The density limit of 1 person per 2 square metres applies to any spaces and activities being attended by parents/carers and other visitors.  If parents need to come to school (to purchase uniform items or collect booklists etc...), please report directly to the office.
  • All visitors are required to sign in and out at the office.

Victorian Chief Health Officer Message to Schools and their Communities

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome back the Victorian school community in 2021.

Following an incredible effort by students, staff, teachers, parents and carers last year, Victorian schools are well placed to safely commence the new school year. Schools will return to a largely normal program of activities, including welcoming parents and other vital members of the school community back into their grounds.

Throughout the pandemic, Victorian schools have rapidly adapted and successfully implemented measures to reduce the risk of coronavirus (COVID-19) transmission in school environments. By embedding COVIDSafe principles in all its operations and reinforcing good behaviours throughout 2020, schools have created safe spaces, and are in a strong position to quickly respond to any coronavirus (COVID-19) risks that may emerge.

Given the current very low risk of coronavirus (COVID-19) transmission in the community, continued high rates of testing, wastewater monitoring, and continued observance of health and safety measures in schools; those with medical vulnerabilities or their carers can feel reassured that they can safely return to working and learning on site.

While we have seen outbreaks emerge over the summer break, we have also witnessed our capacity to respond quickly to limit the impact of these outbreaks. Should community cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) increase again, I am confident that with COVIDSafe plans in place, alongside our ability to quickly identify and respond to cases – schools remain safe places for all staff and students. I also continue to be reassured by evidence that children are less impacted by the virus and are less likely to develop severe illness.

It is crucial, however, for everyone to remain vigilant – to stay home when unwell, get tested, perform regular hand hygiene, wear a mask when required and maintain physical distancing from others when practical. Schools should consider how they can continue to pursue strategies that contribute to reduced transmission of coronavirus (COVID-19).

Schools and parents continue to have an important role to promote and ensure testing when a child or staff member has any symptoms, no matter how mild, and then stay home. Getting tested and staying home until results are known, remains critical to limiting community transmission.

Welcome Back

I trust that everyone had a relaxing and safe holiday break and that students are keen and enthusiastic to get their schooling off to a positive start. I would like to welcome all new students, especially our Foundation children and Year 7 students that are starting at Nhill College for the first time. Likewise, to all our new families joining us, it is great to have you with us and I would encourage you to become actively involved in our college community. The year has commenced very positively, which included two days of extensive testing of our primary students. This has provided valuable knowledge and understanding for our teachers to deliver more effective and individualised learning to our students. I would like to acknowledge and thank our primary teachers for their huge efforts over these days.

2021 College Captains

At our first Secondary assembly for 2021, we formally introduced our new student leaders for the year. Our College Captains are Dia and Brock, while our Vice-Captains are Ruby and Jasper. Congratulations to these students. They will be fine leaders and wonderful role-models for our student body. Brock and Dia have already undertaken their first offical duty as Nhill College Captains at the Australia Day Celebrations on Tuesday in Goldsworthy Park. Dia and Brock were part of the offical party who had the priviledge of raising the Australian Flag. Our captains completed some leadership workshops (yLead) in Melbourne throughout the holidays and are really excited with their new roles in the school. We look forward to working with this amazing young team throughout the year. Thank you to Mrs Coughlan for organising the yLead trip.

2021 BYOD News: Edunet Specifications Sheet for Parents

The shift to remote learning last year led to significant changes to our traditional methods of providing students who don't have BYODs with access to school laptops.  These arrangements will stay in place for this year, which is fantastic for all those families who do not have a BYOD, as we are committed to ensuring that that this provision will be available in 2021.  However, there will be one major change to the borrowing arrangements this year.  Those students who do not have a BYOD, will not be permitted to take their school allocated laptop home with them each night and will be required to return them to the charging station in the library at the end of the day.  This will help us to avoid any damage in transit between school and home, as well as acting as an incentive for families to consider a BYOD that can be used at home as well as at school.

To assist those families interested in exploring BYOD options, we have new and updated models for our BYOD program through Edunet.  Please open the attachment below for details about the devices.  Mr Shrive is happy to take questions from parents or students if they are looking at purchasing a BYOD.

The online ordering portal is accessible via http://nhillcollege.technologyportal.com.au  The Access Code you will need to access the portal is NC2021

A video explaining the benefits of using Edunet can also be found here:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_bWjEs_iA58

Welcome to Facebook

Last year we successfully trialled a Nhill College Facebook page to help us promote school events and activities with the wider community.  We will continue to use Compass, our web page and the weekly newsletter to keep families associated with the school up to date with all of the events and activities that occur in and around the school each week.  However, our Facebook page has allowed us to broaden exposure to the school and reach a number of people who may not have otherwise had access to our formal communication channels.  Our Facebook page will continue to be purely for promotion, publicity and to inform everyone of the upcoming events and happenings within the College.  All notes, questions, concerns or communication to staff regarding students still need to be directed to the College via Compass or on (03) 5391 2111.  To find our Facebook page, simply follow this link: https://www.facebook.com/nhillcollege/ or type Nhill College in the search function on Facebook. (Please be aware there is also an unofficial Nhill College facebook page that does not show the Nhill College logo).

Please like/follow the page and then you will be kept up-to-date with all of our posts.

Access to Nhill College Newsletter

If you are reading this, you obviously have access to the school newsletter.  However, some families have asked how grandparents or community members can stay in touch with the school when they don't have access to Compass.  The answer is that anyone can access the school's newsletter through the College website: www.nhillcollege.vic.edu.au.  Please advise any family, friends or interested members of the wider community, that the newsletter is the main source of information from the school and that it is available to anyone who would like to read it.  Spread the word!
