This Week’s Whale Awards

Principal’s Column

Hello, Giinagay, Hai,

Welcome back to school. Back to a school where every student is known, valued and cared for. Every student, teacher and leader improves every year. We hope you have enjoyed the holiday break and that your children are ready for a great year of learning and growing together.

This year we have 106 children currently in attendance across 5 classes. We are particularly excited to welcome the 14 new kindergarten students and their families who started on Monday. We hope that you have had a great start to the year and we look forward to supporting you and your child through their educational journey.

Congratulations to Karl Krause who through a merit selection process is now a permanent employee for 3 days a week. For the other 2 days, Karl is at Macksville High School where he supports students growth and pathway in the program. Students in the valley can study Indonesian from K to Year 9, with the long term aim of the option of studying for the Higher School Certificate. Welcome to Emily Brien who is joining the SHPS staff as an Indonesian teacher and replacing Bibi who is moving to NT.  Welcome back to Tim Mc Cormack who previously worked here before as a SLSO, who will support our new Kindy students.

Congratulations to Lyndsey Caldecott who has been successful in gaining the position of Instructional Leader at Macksville PS each Monday. Rebecca Schweinsberg will be working on the Monday in the 5/6 classroom. We also welcome Abe Le Cerf as the casual General Assistant, who is replacing Ben Borthwick at the present time. Abe has done an excellent job in making the school look beautiful for the new year.

Positive Behaviour Learning (PBL) and Values Education at Scotts Head PS

At Scotts Head PS  there is a school-wide approach towards positive student behaviour. We refer to this approach as the “Positive Behaviour Learning” Framework (or PBL). There are four values in the framework, being; Teamwork, Respect, Responsibility and Honesty.

Support

If at any time, you would like to raise an issue regarding the needs of your child/ren in relation to learning or social/emotional matters, classroom teachers provide a good first port of call. Additionally, please feel free to make contact with the Assistant Principal or Principal, particularly if there is a need to discuss more sensitive or complex information.

Scotts Head Public School prides itself on being a school that implements a thorough approach towards supporting students with learning and wellbeing. Good communication between parents, teachers and school leadership enables this to occur.

The culture of a school can be described as the way that teachers and other staff members work together and the set of beliefs, values and assumptions they share. A positive school culture promotes and enhances student (and staff) learning. Integrity Coaching in the UK suggest that positive school cultures have five main characteristics:

  • Shared goals and vision (attached)
  • Collegiality - we’re in this together
  • Continuous improvement and lifelong learning – we can always get better
  • Risk taking – we learn by doing something new
  • Celebration and humour – we certainly feel good about ourselves and our great school

Thanks, yaarri yaraang, terima kasih.

SHPS Staff 2020

Scotts Head School Vision

At Scotts Head Public School the learning opportunities we provide for students are; engaging, flexible, diverse and encompass contemporary and future contexts. The staff foster and nurture innovative practises, implementing a cohesive learning experience, through quality teaching and a network of partnerships within local and global communities.

We continue to build an open, ethical and responsible culture, in which all individuals are valued, in a shared purpose that is productive. We are a collaboration of professionals, learning from others, developing expertise, where every teacher’s effectiveness is progressively enhanced, improving positive outcomes for students. We aim to ensure a safe, caring, happy, orderly and productive learning community based upon respectful relationships.

Positive Behaviours for Teaching (PBT)

A high level of trust exists between the different individuals and groups, with an appreciation of differences. The Positive Behaviours for Teaching are:

  • Respect
  • Empathy/Kindness
  • Fairness
  • Co-operation/Collaboration
  • Flexibility

Our School Learning Vision

Scotts Head PS provides an innovative, inclusive and future focused learning environment, where all stakeholders are encouraged to be creative and critical thinkers to achieve and thrive as learners, leaders and citizens. We aim to develop the capacity of all students to be empowered visible learners with aspirational expectations of learning, progress and achievement. With students at the centre of all decision making, teachers work collaboratively for their ongoing learning by creating challenging, engaging and differentiated learning opportunities that embed the Visible Learning pedagogy.

Aspiration Statement

All students at Scotts Head Public School make measurable progress in all Key Learning Areas and exhibit the characteristics of assessment-capable visible learners. They understand what they are learning, how they are going, where they will go next, and can interpret assessment results and act on this understanding.

Learning Habits

Learning Habits outline the cycle of actions students demonstrate during the learning process. They describe a student’s inclination to use particular skills when faced with problems to solve, ideas to evaluate or decisions to make. The 4 habits are:

  • Focus
  • Engage
  • Collaborate
  • Reflect

Ethics Classes for 2020

Ethics (and scripture) will begin on Friday 14 February. This year ethics will only be available for Stage 2 and 3 as we only have two trainers. This will be for students in Years 3/4 and Year 5/6.

Become an Ethics teacher

Do you have 1 hour a week to volunteer with our Primary Ethics Team? Fridays 11.30am-12.30pm. Full Training will be offered in March in Coffs Harbour which will include online modules completed at home.

The program is written out beautifully, facilitating discussions about philosophical and ethical topics, and helping students develop skills in listening, building on each other's ideas and respectfully disagreeing with each other.

Meet our new Indonesian teacher Emily

Hai! Kenalkan, nama saya Emily Brien, tetapi panggil saya Bu Emi.
Hi! Let me introduce myself. My name is Emily Brien, but you can call me Bu Emi. I'm the new bilingual Indonesian teacher at Scotts Head PS and I'm so glad to be here. I've just moved to Yarrahapinni from a small town in north-east Victoria called Beechworth. I've taught Indonesian from K-8 at various schools over the last ten years, and have been to Indonesia seven times but have never lived or worked there. I love being in nature and just joined a local bush-walking club. I also enjoy world music so joined a choir in Kempsey. I'm really enjoying exploring this beautiful area and meeting so many lovely people - but I am starting to miss my partner and dog who are still back home in Beechworth. I'm looking forward to getting to know this wonderful little community and being part of the SHPS team. Please come and say hello if you see me around. Sampai jumpa! Until we meet!

Indonesian Adult Language Class

Selamat pagi teman-teman,

As discussed at the end of last year we will be completing our last two sessions of our adult beginners class package this term. We hope to subsequently begin a level two course with any of you who are interested in continuing your studies.

Our first lesson back will be next Tuesday 11 February at 3:15 pm in the 4/5 classroom (same room as usual).

We will also be happy to introduce you to our new Indonesian teacher, Bu Emi, who has moved all the way from Victoria to replace me.  I will continue to facilitate the class for the next two weeks.

Please if anyone is interested in studying Indonesian please get in touch with the office and see if we have the interest to begin another class. Each lesson includes notes and a recorded link for you to review at your leisure. If you are interested to see how it all works come along and sit in on the class on the 11th.

Hopefully we are going to see a few new faces.

Regards Bu Bibi

LASH Talk - Tuesday 18 February

The LASH talks are resuming starting with Bushfires on 18 February.

We will have three speakers:

1) Scotty Balfour, our Fire captain, to talk about experiences fighting local fires in November last year

2) Geoff Goldrick, from Grassy Head, who will present the evidence for and against climate change and hazard reduction as players in bushfires

3) Our third speaker will be Rhys Pacey who spends most of his time at the National Park north of Scotts Head. Rhys has worked extensively on country and can bring a cultural perspective to fire in our landscape.

All contributions will be fascinating. We need to learn what they can teach us because we will have more bushfires in future years. The evening starts with a meal at 6 PM, cost $29. Book early. Talks begin at 7 PM.

Michael Blockey, LASH Coordinator
