The Department of Education has created new guidelines for the enrolment of students entering Year 7 at a Public School in 2020. It is now a requirement that families submit an Application Form for Year 7 Placement in 2020 with the secondary school they wish their child to attend. This application form is to be returned to your preferred secondary school by Friday 17th May. Miss Roantree has been in touch with each of the three primary providers in Nhill and has distributed the appropriate application forms to all Year 6 students earlier in next week. To assist families to fill out the form, and to provide some information about Year 7 at Nhill College, an Information Night has been scheduled for Monday 13th May at 7.00pm in the Administration Building.
Individual packs for the coming School Photos were sent home with students today. Families are asked to check that their personal details have been recorded correctly and return the permission forms with payment before the Photos day - Monday 27th May.
It has been another busy week in the sporting landscape at Nhill College. Monday saw a number of neighbouring schools visit our fantastic facilities to compete in the Secondary Little Desert Athletics. The blue skies and mild conditions made for some excellent viewing for all of the parents who attended from each of the participating schools. Conditions were not quite so kind for Years 3-6 Cross Country which was held on Thursday morning. The cool wind and threat of (much-needed) rain had organisers on edge as to whether we would get the event completed before the skies opened. We were again pleased to play host to staff, students and parents from the St Patrick's and Nhill Lutheran Schools for this and for the F-2 Fun Day which was held this afternoon. Another chilly breeze did little to dampen the enthusiasm of junior students as they showed off their sporting abilities to a large crowd of parents, grandparents and friends. Many thanks to our student helpers and our tireless sports staff - especially Miss Smith, Mr McDonald, Miss Tink and Mr Hedt - for their efforts in preparing for these events and making sure they run so smoothly. Thank you also to the many parents who have visited the school over the past few days to see their children taking advantage of some of the many opportunities provided for them by the school.
Students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 will be participating in the annual NAPLAN testing over the 3 days of May 14-16. A link to a letter providing further details about NAPLAN is attached below. A brochure will also be sent home to families of those students who will be sitting the tests. Any parents with questions relating to NAPLAN should feel free to contact the school.

Scooters are a very popular means of transport for many of our students and they are often used on the way to and from school each day. However, those students who ride their scooters to school are asked to be more aware of traffic conditions and to keep out of the way of any other vehicles using the roads.
At a meeting earlier in the year, our College Captains made the suggestion to re-introduce the idea of Nhill College holding a school Fete. This suggestion was very positively received by students and discussions with staff and school council have also been in favour of the concept. After a great deal of discussion with students and staff, it was decided that the first Friday in November would be the best time to fit a fete into our busy school calendar. Please set aside Friday 1st November for an afternoon of fun and engaging activities that the whole family will be able to enjoy.
If you are reading this, you obviously have access to the school newsletter. However, some families have asked how grandparents or community members can stay in touch with the school when they don't have access to Compass. The answer is that anyone can access the school's newsletter through the College website: www.nhillcollege.vic.edu.au. Please advise any family, friends or interested members of the wider community, that the newsletter is the main source of information from the school and that it is available to anyone who would like to read it. Spread the word!
Just a reminder that the primary assembly commences on a Monday afternoon at 2.50pm in the Wimmera building. All family members are welcome to attend each week.
Due to the Little Desert Athletics Carnival held here at Nhill College with other schools of Balmoral, Dimboola, Edenhope, Goroke, Kaniva, Hopetoun, Rainbow and Nhill College students competing, we held no secondary assembly on Monday. The weekly awards for year 10 students will be announced at this coming Monday's assembly.
The Healthy Relationship Value focus for the second week of Term 2 was Consideration. The weekly winners of this value were – F/1 Kerber – Nathan, 1/2 Smith – Aj, 3 McDonald – Ethan, 4/5/6 Jones – Katani and 4/5/6 Crouch – Hayley.
Congratulations to all students who were nominated.
The winner of the weekly canteen voucher for the week was Hseh Ku.
Well done to all students who were nominated.
On Tuesday Night, year 5-8 girls and their mum, aunty or significant other were invited to an evening of Girls stuff!! The night commenced with a lovely meal prepared by Lachlan and Tamika. Presenters from the West Wimmera Health Service Janine Clark and Michelle Barber talked to the group about puberty. Then they were split into a girls and an adult group, to discuss further puberty questions. It was a fantastic evening with lots of information and laughter. A big thank you to all staff involved in organising, supporting and supervising this evening.
Foundation/One Kerber celebrated Mother’s Day on Thursday afternoon inviting mums, grandmas, nannas or a friend along to celebrate. Mums were treated to some beautiful mother's day activities and a spectacular high tea in the special restaurant prepared by the students. Thanks Mrs Kerber, Mrs Grover and her students for making this a special event for all.
Congratulations to Braydan Watson-Eagles for coming second in the Wheatlands Machinery Museum colouring competition. Over 150 entries were received, and we are very proud of his achievement.
This year Nhill College is going to be celebrating Harmony Day on the 17th of May. This day is marked by people coming together and participating in local activities. It is about community participation, inclusiveness, celebrating diversity, respect and belonging. To celebrate this day we are joining up with our neighbouring school, Kaniva College, to come together for some sports and a BBQ.
Regular attendance at school is extremely important to the social and academic development of all children. It is a Department requirement that parents contact the school each day their child is absent. Any unauthorised absences currently trigger an SMS via Compass at 9.45am each morning to notify parents that their child is not at school. If a parent receives such an SMS, it is requested that they contact the school as soon as possible to provide a reason for their child’s absence. This can be done by entering an explanation directly onto Compass via the app installed on your phone, or by calling the College on 53912111. (Please note that the Skoolbag app is no longer being used by the school to communicate messages.) In an effort to further reduce the rate of unauthorised absences being recorded at Nhill College, office staff will follow up with a phone call if a response to the SMS has not been received by 10.45am on the day of each absence.

A list of latest model computers available from Nhill Bi-Rite and Wimmera Office Equipment has been included in this week’s newsletter for the consideration of families interested in a BYOD. These lists contain a range of devices that will be able to support student learning – at home and at school – over the next few years. A reminder that all students have free access to Microsoft Office, as well as some Adobe programs through their school subscription. For families considering a BYOD, it is worth noting that electronic resources are being used more and more frequently in classes, with the College subsidising Edrolo subscriptions for all VCE students, while Maths Pathways and Education Perfect resources are also being used more extensively across Years 7-10 this year. If you have any questions related to the College’s BYOD program, feel free to contact Mr Shrive. The BYOD product lists can be downloaded from the link below, as well as being available from the College website. Printed copies can be obtained from Mr Shrive on request.

From 2019 Nhill College will no longer be using the SkoolBag app. This means all notifications and absent notes will happen within Compass. We encourage parents to logon to Compass to approve any absences your child may have, or to lodge an absence in advance if the dates and times are known. The following is a reminder from the Compass FAQ Sheet that went home with all students last year. The FAQ Sheet can also be found on our website.
How do I submit an absence note?
If using a computer, go to https://nhillcollege-vic.compass.education/ then view the student’s profile, select “Attendance” and then go to “Notes/Approvals”. Click on “Add Attendance Note” to submit a note via Compass.
If you are using the app, go to the student’s profile, “Approvals” tab, and then click the plus button to add a note. You can submit notes ahead of time if you know your child will be absent in the future.
From 2019 parents will be able to complete bus notes on our website at http://www.nhillcollege.vic.edu.au/. This will not require the app to access. Alternatively, parents will be able to ring the College or email nhill.co@edumail.vic.gov.au
