Farewell to staff

As another year ends, we farewell staff and wish them all the best. Mr Blake Mazic has been a wonderful asset to our school this year and we wish him all the best at his new school closer to his home on the Gold Coast.

Mrs Michelle Petterson has been transferred to Yarrabilba State School under the required transfer process. We know that Michelle will maintain her close friendships at our school and we all wish her all the best in her new adventure. Mr Jordan Jacob has secured a full-time teaching position at South Rock  State School and we also wish him all the best. He was a lovely addition to our school this year.

All our departing teachers are much loved staff members and have made amazing connections to the students, staff and Beaudesert community during their time at our school. While we are sad to see them go, we wish them all the very best in their new journeys.

Mrs Sarah Smith has accepted an acting leadership position as the Student Engagement Teacher at Ipswich West State School until the end of Term 3 2023. Sarah has been teaching at Beaudesert for 21 years and is a much-loved staff member. We wish her all the very best.

Ms Jo Mentiplay, Mr Chris McIntyre, Mrs Marion Hanson and Mrs Kym Dagan are on leave for all of 2023 and Mrs Lynn Jorgensen is on leave for the first semester.

Welcome New Staff

Mrs Ann French – Year 1

My name is Ann French.  I was an early transfer to Beaudesert State School in Term 4 this year, teaching Year 3.  I have been teaching for 16 years, with most of my teaching experience working with students in Junior Primary, either as a classroom teacher or as an Inclusion/Support teacher working with students with disability.  I am also a mother to two children; my son is in Year 3 and my daughter is in Year 1.  In the short time that I have been here at Beaudesert State School, I have fallen in love with the school, the staff, the students and the community and I am looking forward to continuing on next year teaching Year 1.

Mrs Alyse Kelly – Year 3

My name is Alyse Kelly and I have been teaching at Beaudesert State School as a relief teacher across term 3 and 4 in 2022 and have loved getting to know all the students across all year levels. I am so excited to have some of the current Year 2's in my class as Year 3's in 2023. I'm looking forward to building strong relationships with the students and their families and am thrilled to be able to join them in their next year of learning.

Mrs Joanne Wiiliams - Year 4

Hello Beaudesert SS, my name is Joanne Williams and I am thrilled to be teaching as part of the Year 4 Team next year!  A little about myself - I have mainly taught in Central Queensland schools in my career, and more recently in the New South Wales Clarence Valley Region.  However never fear as I will definitely wear maroon come the State of Origin!  I enjoy travelling, anything to do with Ancient Egypt, gardening and my Alaskan Malamute (possibly the world's most photographed dog)!  Looking forward to meeting you in 2023.

Mrs Kim Foster – Year 6

Hi there, my name is Kim Foster and I’m really looking forward to joining the team at Beaudesert next year. I currently live near Canungra, which is where I am teaching now, along with my husband and teenage daughter. Outside of school, I like anything to do with the outdoors; camping, going to the beach and sports. I hear you are a strong rugby school, however, I’ll admit to preferring AFL! I like to have fun and my goal will be to provide a safe, enjoyable place for your kids, where they will learn and flourish. Have a great Christmas break and I look forward to meeting you next year.

Doors open at 5:00pm for a 5:45pm start and we ask all guests to park at the front of the high school and walk to the Multi-purpose Hall which is located to the back of the school. Back of high school parking is reserved for P&C members and staff carrying heavy loads for the concert. The P&C will have light snacks available for purchase. If you are available to help clean up after the concert, we would really appreciate it. More hands make light work for everyone.

Year 6 Graduation and Awards Night

Last week we celebrated our graduating Year 6 students with their annual Year 6 Award and Graduation Evening. Thank you, Year 6 students, for their positive contribution to our school this year. They have demonstrated leadership and resilience and we are proud of you all. Our school community wishes them the absolute best as they embark on the next chapter of their schooling.

Flashing School Zone Signs – Arthur Street

The Department of Transport and Main Roads has been reviewing all school zones within Queensland. The review has highlighted that road safety in Arthur Street school zone at Beaudesert State School could be improved by the installation of flashing school zone signs and the works will commence in the coming weeks.

The installation of flashing school zone signs improves visibility of school zones and serves as an active reminder for motorists to slow down.

Please keep an eye on our Skoolbag app for up to date messaging about 2023 in the coming weeks and New Year.

I wish you all a safe and Merry Christmas.

Senior School Classroom Reports

Year 3

As part of our English unit, Year 3 students have spent the term learning about poetry. We have read many types of poems and explored the different features in each of them. We have also learnt about writing poems and are currently creating a poem about the beach to present in front of the class. Student engagement and the quality of work throughout this unit has been wonderful to see. A great way to finish off our English learning for the year.

Year 3 students have also been very excited to take part in swimming lessons this term. All three classes have enjoyed their time in the pool and showed great improvements in their stroke formation.

Over the past few weeks, Year 3 students have been very busy working on their Visual Arts assessment ‘Tiny Worlds’. They have sprinkled glitter to all corners of each and every classroom! As teachers, we could not be prouder of the effort and ability of our wonderful jarjums and are so thankful to parents for supporting our learning. We finished our unit of work with gallery style afternoon celebrating with parents and friends.

Lost Property

As always we have a mountain of lost property piling up at school. A lot of it is unnamed which makes it extremely hard to get it returned to the rightful owner. If your student has lost any items direct them to the lost property bins which are located near the undercover area at the end of the year 6 classroom block or you're welcome to pop in for a look yourselves. Please check there if your children are missing any of their belongings.

PLEASE MAKE SURE ALL BELONGINGS ARE CLEARLY LABELLED!

Chappy Corner

Would you like to be part of making a difference? I am so thankful for the role of chaplaincy and the opportunity to support our school community each week. Unfortunately, the current government funding does not cover the costs of chaplaincy and so we rely on the support of our community to continue to provide a chaplaincy service for three days a week here at Beaudesert State School. Coming into 2023, I would love you to join me in seeking to make a positive difference in the lives of students, staff and families and consider becoming a regular donor. Your donations are tax deductible and by becoming a regular donor, you can be part of the difference chaplaincy makes. Three days allows me to provide more consistent support and be available for students when they need help. It also provides the space to run programs such as our Bella Girls Group and All Stars Friendship group, along with the HOPE cooking and brekky club. The QR code below takes you to a link where you can sign up to be a regular monthly, quarterly or yearly donor, at an amount that suits you, that goes directly to Chaplaincy here at Beaudesert State School. Even $10 or $20 a month would be such a help. Please consider whether you can support chaplaincy in this way. Thank you.

This term Mrs Smith and I finished up our Bella Girls group with lunch at Café 63. It has been a lovely group of girls and we always enjoy seeing them grow and recognise their value and worth.

Our All Stars Friendship group has continued each Tuesday afternoon and we have had fun looking at different values of friendship and completing activities to help us see how important those values are and how we can be a better friend.

In Term 4 our HOPE cooking group opened up to Year 5’s. We have enjoyed cooking quiche, muffins, savoury scrolls, choc chip biscuits, cupcakes and cheeseburger sausage rolls. Our HOPE cooking has provided support for many families throughout the year. Let us know if you have any easy oven recipes that we could try next year.

Staff vs Student Matches

A highlight of each term this year has been our staff vs students challenges that School Captain, Hayden has instigated. So many students participate and cheer, it is a great atmosphere and so much fun!! We have challenged each other to touch footy, bin ball, soccer, European handball and will finish with netball. A massive thank you to Hayden for something I am sure will continue for many years to come.

Next year I would love to invest further in looking for ways to help you, as parents and caregivers. Please let me know if you have any ideas on what would work with providing you support in your important roles, caring for your children and helping them grow.

I hope you have a wonderful Christmas break. For me, it truly is my favourite time of the year. I love spending time with my family, I love all the fairy lights and I love celebrating the birth of Jesus. If you enjoy Christmas carols, you might like to come along to our church carols and you may even get to hear Chappy Jade sing 😊

Thank you for all your support this year and I look forward to what 2023 holds.

Merry Christmas, Chappy Jade

Sports Update

This term we had our swimming carnival. It was a great day in the sun- with no snakes! The students’ behaviour was commendable, and it was amazing to see so many students in attendance. Churchill House won on the day through their great participation in the races. Special mention to our Age Champions Kayla, Hayden, Summa-Rae, Urban, Kaylee, Stirling, Amber and Jett.

Overall, this year has been a fantastic year of sport for Beaudesert SS. We have had many students make representative sides in and out of school. Students have also participated well in all of our carnivals this year: junior and senior cross country, junior and senior sports day, and the swimming carnival. Our school also absolutely smashed it in Kingfisher Cup this year!

I am very much looking forward to next year in building on our successes, as we all know Beaudesert has a rich heritage as a sporting community.

Thank you for everyone for their continuing support.

Swimming Age Champions

Kingfisher Cup - Netball

Kingfisher Cup netball was another successful venture for Beaudesert State School. Taking 3 teams to the competition was great and all players were responsible, respectful and played hard over the two days.

Our Senior team placed 5th overall, with the competition being in two pools because there were so many teams. Junior 1 team also placed 3rd and Junior 2 placed 5th. All teams played incredibly well and used the skills practised in training on the court.

A big thankyou to Mrs Ford, Mrs Iselin and Mrs Brose for all of their support and guidance leading up to the carnival and on the days themselves.

Sporting Achievements

If you would like your child’s school sporting achievements outlined in the newsletter, please contact the front office on 5540 1111. A reminder that the P&C offer school sporting sponsorships which can be applied for via the front office. The application can also be found on our school website under Support and Resources / Forms and Documents.

STEM Team News

STEM Program 2022 Presentation

To round up our excursion to the Kids' STEM Convention the students broke into groups to work on projects. The aim of the projects was to define a problem and then create a solution to it.

The students worked on this project during STEM sessions and many also gave up their lunch breaks to continue working in their groups. Many hours were put into the projects both at school and home.

On Thursday the 10th November the groups presented their projects to our school judges and answered some of their questions. We then welcomed their parents in to see all of their hard work.

Once the judges scores were collated Mrs Gauld presented the students with their certificates and then the winning team were presented with their medals.  All of the teams scores were very close in the end, as they had all done an amazing job.

The team that came third by .5 of a mark with a design and engineering task that focused on using a robot to get left over food from bakeries to homeless people was Mahalia, Lexi, Charlotte and Taylah.

Second was awarded to a team that completed a digital technologies task. They built a chatbot called Pico, who interacted with people and taught them about malicious security. This team comprised of Koa, Sebastian F, Eamon and Kelly.

Our winning team also focussed on a design and engineering challenge.  The purpose of this project was to engage people with intellectual disabilities to participate in more physical activity. The team built a wooden prototype of a robot and described how it would exercise with people in need. Congratulations to Hayden, Emma, Adlai, Xavier & Amber.

JAPANESE CULTURAL DAY

On Friday 25th November, Beaudesert State School year 6 students took part in our Japanese Cultural Day. This event has been taking place annually for over 25 years.

Our students had the opportunity to experience some different elements of Japanese culture.  Activities included traditional activities such as kimono wearing (traditional dress); shuuji (calligraphy brush writing); karate (martial art); tama-ire (Japanese sports day ball game); kendama (traditional toy); sumo wrestling and sadou (green tea ceremony). The students enjoyed 30 minutes with their class at each of the rotations. Our lunch was a delicious and authentic Japanese Obentou lunch box, with rice, beans, Japanese vegetables, spring roll with a choice of teriyaki chicken, karaage chicken or noodles.  The students did really well using chopsticks.

Many thanks must go to the various visiting experts from our community who demonstrated their special skills for us, especially members from Beaudesert’s Black Dragon Kai Martial Arts Club, Kara Heit and Tish Harris, our Japanese volunteers from the Hashimoto Japanese School and our Japanese guests from Hakuunan Brisbane Green Tea Ceremony.

Finally, a special thank you to our P&C for providing a delicious afternoon tea for our guests, and to all our wonderful staff and volunteer helpers. Our day can not proceed without their wonderful commitment and support.

Enjoy the photos attached.
