Week 2 - Term 2, 10 May 2019

From the Principal's Desk

Welcome Back

Although we are now at the end of our second week of this term, I would like to take this opportunity to welcome our families back and to especially welcome all of our new families. Our numbers continue to grow and we currently have 581 students officially enrolled at our school. This is a massive increase on last year and, I believe, it reflects the positive vibe we have created at SGHS. Thank you to all for your ongoing support.

Upgrades to our Facilities

You may be aware by now that we are in the process of upgrading the student’s toilets. At present the boy’s toilets are being completely refurbished. They will have new tile floors, tile walls from floor to ceiling and toilets with seats. Some of the boys have told me that this will be “sheer luxury”. Once the boy’s toilets are finished the work will begin on the girl’s toilets and I anticipate that by the end of Term 3 all work will be finished.

In addition to this we have just finished upgrading one of the computer rooms. It is looking magnificent with a new television, 30 desktop computers, new benches and a fresh coat of paint. The room next to it will also undergo a similar upgrade very soon and we are installing new blinds in the Maths and English blocks.

It is my intention that over the next 5 years we will put a considerable amount of time and money into upgrading the facilities at SGHS. This will ensure that our students have access to a modern, inviting and stimulating learning environment.

Mother’s Day Breakfast

Thursday morning’s breakfast was a great success. The weather was beautiful, the food was delicious and the barista coffee definitely hit the spot. Thank you to the mothers who came along and enjoyed then time with their children. I would particularly like to thank my mother and sister for coming along and sharing the morning with me. The connections we have with the people who care about us are the most important ones to cultivate.

South Radio

Mr Miller has been working hard over the course of this year in setting up South Radio, our schools radio station. The radio station currently runs on Friday mornings, but there is plans to expand as more students become involved.

In setting up South Radio a competition was held with students to design a logo with Noah Reid's design being named the winner.

Woolworths Earn and Learn

SGHS is again taking part in the Woolworths Earn & Learn promotion which will provide useful resources and equipment for our school. Could you please collect the Earn & Learn vouchers when you shop at Woolworths and place them in the SGHS box outside Woolworths or the box in the School foyer. The more vouchers our school collects the more equipment we will receive. Thank you, your assistance is greatly appreciated.

Naplan Numeracy & Literacy Practice

All students have been set  NAPLAN NUMERACY, READING & WRITING PRACTICE on our Education Perfect platform. Each student has a login: "sghsfirstnamelastname" and a password. These practice assessments have been set as holiday homework and are optional.

Staff Profile- Mrs Kemmis

We are going to start introducing you to some of the wonderful staff that we have here at South Grafton High School. The first that we would like to introduce you to is Mrs Kemmis.

Mrs Kemmis has been teaching English across all stages at South Grafton High School for 13 years. She lists our immense school pride, the genuine love and respect felt between our staff and students, and our continuous ability to exceed academic, sporting and social expectations as what makes SGHS a special place.

When she is not at school Mrs Kemmis loves to cook, sew and restore furniture.

And what is she cooking? Her favourite is a good baked dinner on the weekend, although "we are extremely lucky that we have such a wonderful canteen at SGHS. Vivi and Jodie’s food is delicious!"

Mrs Kemmis says, "I am very proud to be a teacher at South Grafton High School. We have an awesome school community who work tirelessly to ensure the academic, social and wellbeing needs of our students are met everyday. Our students are tenacious and genuine. It’s such a wonderful feeling to walk through the corridors everyday and be greeted by such happy faces".

Year 10 Careers Role Model Day

On Tuesday, all of Year 10 participated in the Careers Role Model Day at school. The event provided students with the opportunity to explore different career pathways by engaging with people from a wide variety of careers within our local community. The program was run by Stellar and was delivered in partnership with a number of organisations including; the RMS, Clarence Valley Council, Southern Cross University, North Coast TAFE and a variety of local employees in the areas of Health, Law, Business and Engineering. During each presentation students learnt about the presenter's pathway to their current role and what their day to day job involves.

TAFE YES Program

The TAFE YES Program started this week and involves 40 students across Year 9 and Year 10. Students have selected to participate in a course from the options of; Automotive, Beauty Services, Early Childhood Education, Music, Barista, App and Graphic Design, Carpentry, and Animal studies. The program aims to provide a practical, hands on experience and skills in the chosen industry area. The feedback from students about their first week has been very positive and the courses continue for one day per week for another five weeks.

Congratulations
