Term 1 Week 6: 27th February - 3rd March 2023

Principal's Blog

Welcome to Week 6!

After a wander around the school this morning I’m pleased to report we have all our students happily engaged in several different activities in their classrooms.

Make My Day

Last week I had my first Kindergarten students for 2023 visit to show me their work. Isobel and Ruby from KF came to read some sentences they had put together in a flip book. Both girls read their sentences confidently and were very proud of their work. Well done girls thanks for the visit!

Amazing Defibrillator Donation

On Saturday I was invited to Swansea Pub for the presentation of a defibrillator for our school by Swansea Lions Club. Swansea Lions Club along with support from Swansea Pub raised money through raffles and other events to enable the purchase of defibrillators for Pelican Flat PS, Marks Point PS and Caves Beach PS. They have also made donations to the other schools in our Galgabba Community of Schools prior to this. We will be inviting representatives from the Lions Club to attend a school assembly soon so our students and staff can thank them for this amazing donation.

Learning Support Team

Our Learning Support team play a large role in supporting many students across our school in many ways. Some of these include supporting students with learning needs, creating programs for students from non-English speaking backgrounds and assisting students with social needs through social skills programs. They also aid staff and parents, conduct class observations, provide recommendations on ways to move forward for students and run professional learning for staff. Our L&S staff have a wealth of knowledge and are now supporting parents with some additional information around several topics weekly via this Newsletter.

Pick Up and Drop Off Zone

Thank you to all parents who have been using our PICK UP and DROP OFF ZONE correctly and safely. We have welcomed several new families this year and ask for respect while they adjust to this system. When picking up your child using our Pick Up Zone you are to clearly display your family name on your car’s front window, remain in your car and follow the direction of the staff responsible for the Pick Up Zone operation. If your child is unable to enter your car and buckle themselves safely, you will need to continue to the end of the zone to attend to them or meet them in an alternate place. Remember the pick up zone is not operational until 2.45pm. Every parent has the right to pick up and drop their child safely at school and we are responsible for every child’s safety.

Grow Your Mind

For those families who are new to the school and a refresher for the families who have continued on. Grow Your Mind awareness is an important whole school approach to student wellbeing.

We will be introducing an animal each fortnight that your child is learning about in class.

This week is the GUARD DOG who helps keep you safe, but you need to know how to shrink him if he becomes too protective!

True or False?

Drinking enough water can help our brain health.

True. Drinking water is good for a healthy brain. Research has shown that water helps our brain to stay focus and reduce mental fatigue. Our brain is nearly 75% water. Staying hydrated is linked to increased attention and focus, reduce headaches, and improve your mood. Read more.

True or False?

A poor diet can lead to a greater risk of anxiety.

True. A healthy diet can help us cope with our emotions and manage stress. Poor nutrition has been associated with reduced immune system function. Our brain has nutritional needs and what we eat can help manage systems of stress, anxiety, and depression. Did you know that foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids such as salmon and sardine may benefit you and improve brain health and functions? Read more.

Zone Swimming

DAY 1

What a fantastic first day at the Eastlake Macquarie Zone Swimming Carnival. We had so many of our amazing swimmers hit PB’s and finish on the podium.

DAY 2

Today is our freestyle and relay events. It was a very wet start to day 2 of the Zone Swimming Carnival. It did not stop these fantastic students from braving the tough conditions and showing some amazing resilience.

Unfortunately, Mother Nature got the better of us before we could finish off the day. A massive thank you to the all the parents and carers who helped and pitched in during the tough conditions.

The catch-up day is set for Tuesday 28th February.

Canberra Royal Show

Congratulations to Shiloh J from KB who won her 5-7 year rider class at  the Canberra Royal.

Such an achievement for a 5 year old being one of the youngest of 21 competitors in that class.
