Principal's Message

Hello to all students, staff, parents and carers,

Well, here we are with only two days to go until the end of Term 4 and what a finish it has been. Please read through the information below from Mrs Spooner regarding Parent access to your 2022 Semester Two Children’s Reports and also next year’s Testing days at the beginning of the year.

CHRISTMAS CAROLS NIGHT

What a wonderful night we were fortunate to experience last Tuesday week. The weather could not have been any better, but more importantly the performances of all the students were absolutely amazing. Congratulations kids for your wonderful performances!

Congratulations and a huge thank you to all the teachers and Mr Travers (our Music Teacher) for their thorough preparation of all the performances. The night ran like clockwork. Many thanks also to Joey Armenta (our Guitar teacher) and Sarah De Bono (our Violin teacher and Choir Leader) who assisted the students so capably throughout the evening.

Also, a huge thanks to our Parents and Friends Association who ran the Christmas Raffle with so many great prizes. They raised just over $800. Well done Ladies!!

STAFF SCHEDULE FOR 2023

In one of the following pages you will find the whole Staff schedule for 2023, outlining which Teachers are teaching which grades, the Leadership team, our Administration staff, our Specialist teachers, Learning Support Officers etc.

You may notice that there are a few names missing. Mrs Teresa Pieri is retiring after being with us for 16 years. Thank you Teresa for all your tireless work at St Matthew’s. We wish her every joy in her retirement. You will be sadly missed. We might see you if you decide to do some casual relief teaching. Ms Mellanie Pinheiro (Prep) has taken up a position at St Carlo’s PS in Greenvale, Mr Matthew Donlon (Grade 6) at St Monica’s PS, Moonee Ponds and Mrs Katrina White (Mathematics Leader) at St George Preca, Caroline Springs. All locations closer to their homes. Unfortunately, our loss is certainly these schools’ gain. We thank them for their wonderful service to our school and wish them every success in their new ventures.

Mrs Jessica Saracino who has been one of our amazing Casual Relief Teachers (CRTs) will join us and will be sharing Grade 3 with Mrs Christine Pileggi. Mr Terry Galas has been appointed as the new Grade 6 teacher and comes to us with a wealth of experience as a senior grade teacher. We certainly look forward to Terry joining our Staff team. We are still in the process of appointing a new Mathematics Leader. We will inform you as soon as we have selected the right person.

Also, we are losing four of our Learning Support Officers due to NCCD (National Consistent Collection of Data on School, Students with Disability) government funding cuts. Mrs Kristy Mizza (Year 2), Mrs Sue Kynigopoulos (PA & 3B), Mrs Boon Oh Chee (1A & 2A) and Ms Jessica Lopez (1B & 4A). We sincerely thank all four ladies as they will certainly be missed by both the students they assist and the teachers they have worked with.

READY SET PREP NUMBER 5 & ORIENTATION DAY WEEK 6

Both sessions were very successful with next year’s Preps really becoming involved with the Phonics session in RSP 5 and then the following week meeting their buddies, who are next year’s Year 1’s and working all together with their teachers in their new Prep/One room. We are really looking forward to our two Prep/One grades starting next year.

When the 2023 Prep / Ones come together for the second this Friday 16th December, all other students will step up a grade and make the transition (9:30am – 10:45am) into meeting their new teacher, their new class buddies and their new classroom. This is always an exciting time for all concerned.

WHOLE SCHOOL SPORT COLOUR DAY

Unfortunately, it was a wash out with all the rain on Monday, but Mr B was able to provide an alternative by running a modified version in the hall for all grade levels. This was a huge success considering the change in plans and GREEN team won the day. Congratulations GREEN Team.

I am still waiting for more consistently warm and sunny weather. They say patience is a virtue, but I think my patience is certainly being really tested. Come on Summer get a move on!

Finally, may I take this opportunity to wish all our students, parents and staff a most joyous time with your families and friends over the Christmas period and a most restful and enjoyable holiday break. I look forward to seeing all your smiling faces when we return next year. Take care everyone.

Yours Sincerely,

Bob Brown - Principal

PRAYER FOR THE WEEK

A CHRISTMAS PRAYER

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

ADVENT: JOY

God our Father, we thank you for the joy of this third week of Advent. Open our hearts to praise you now with all your angels and saints as we prepare to celebrate the birth of Jesus, your Son.

We make this prayer in your name.

AMEN

The third week of Advent began last weekend it is also known as “Gaudete Sunday”, which means we have passed the halfway point and Christmas is coming soon. the word Gaudete means “rejoice”, and at this point in our Advent journey, our hearts should be filled with joy as we ponder the magnitude of Christ birth.

We mark this joyful time by lighting the only pink candle on the wreath.

Throughout Advent, priests wear purple vestments except on Gaudete Sunday, when they wear pink vestments during the Mass.

CHRISTMAS

Christmas is a special time for spiritual reflection. It is when we celebrate God’s love for the world through the birth of Christ child: Jesus.

God sent his son to atone for all our sins so that we will never be separated from God. It is because of Jesus, that we are saved and provides us with the true meaning of Christmas. We know that through our belief of Christ we are all daughters and sons of God. Heaven will one day be our home. This Christmas – take time – spend it with family, enjoy the moments we have together.  Acknowledge those who we don’t see often or with whom we struggle, they too need our understanding and love.

Wishing you all a happy and safe Christmas and summer break, stay safe and I look forward to working with you in Religious Education in the New Year.

GOD BLESS

Mrs Helen Howden

Religious Education Leader

LEARNING AND TEACHING

Goodbye from our Maths Leader

I would like to say a big thank you to everyone in the St Matthews school community. I have had a wonderful five years here and have enjoyed working with such an amazing, dedicated staff. I have loved working with students and families across the whole school and hope that the student's positive attitude to Mathematics stays with them for life. Have a wonderful Christmas break and I wish you all the very best in the future.

Warm regards

Katrina White - Mathematics Leader

2023 Testing Days for students

An important part of beginning school is for us to get to know your child’s strengths in English and Mathematics. All students in Years Prep - 6 are asked to book in for a two-hour time slot. During this time, they will sit either English or Mathematics assessments. This is a great opportunity for students to spend some time in a small group with their new teacher.  We are committed to giving your child the best possible start for their school year, and beyond.

Please come through any of the three entrances and students go straight to their new classroom. Students will be dismissed at the three gates so please be sure to let your child know where you will pick them up from.  Please note this is not a full school day, students are not required to wear school uniform, and they are only required to attend school for the duration of their assessment.

Assessments will take place on:

 Monday 30th January and Tuesday 31st January 2023 from 9-11am OR 11.40-1.40pm.

WELLBEING

Wow!!!! What a year 2022 has been. We have been fortunate enough to have a whole year on site at school. This has been a great outcome for our children as they have reconnected with their peers, developed their social skills, and experienced a great year of engaging learning.

We have had performances about resilience, leaderships days for senior students, camps, incursions and excursions as well as engaging and authentic social emotional lessons. These experiences have all contributed to our students developing their own sense of positive wellbeing.

We are extremely proud of all our students and what they have achieved and we look forward to another fantastic and engaging year next year.

Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and a safe holiday break.

Today we welcomed Banjo Cullen back to St Matthew’s to speak to our year 6 students about his experience of secondary school this year.  Banjo was informative and reflective on his year and gave great insight to what to expect when our students head off to secondary school this year.

He answered their questions based on his experiences and I’m sure our students can add that to the great preparations they have been given by the year 6 staff. Thank you so much Banjo!!

Semester 2 Reports

Today you will receive an email letting you know that your child's report is ready for you to access on the nForma Parent Portal. The email contains a temporary password that you need to use to access the reports. All passwords have been reset since the mid year reports were completed.
