Industrial Action Monday 1st July

Dear Families,

I am writing to inform you that Thiele Primary School will be closed for the whole of the school day on Monday 1st July 2019 due to a vote for industrial action by members of the Australian Education Union at this site.

The Education Director has approved the closure on the grounds that insufficient staff will be on duty to enable me as Principal to ensure that adequate standards of student safety and welfare can be provided.

Normal education programs will resume on Tuesday 2 July 2019.

Please be advised that OSHC will be available to cover the period of the industrial action. Families who wish to use this service must book a place by contacting the OSHC on 8270 6178 by 5.00 pm Friday 28 June 2019 to ensure appropriate staffing ratios are maintained.  Families who have not booked a place at the OSHC by this time will not be able to access the service.

Please contact Thiele Primary School via the Front Office if you have any questions regarding this information.

Kind Regards

Sharon Willoughby

Acting Principal

Thiele Primary School

Welcome

We would like to welcome Lisa Horton as our Acting Deputy Principal, Lisa has been appointed to our school for 2019.

From the Acting Principal

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Written reports for all students for semester 1 are being finalized and will be sent out to parents in the last week of this term.

The student reports will be presented in the A4 format, but there has been a slight change to the report presentation to provide you will more information each student’s achievements, areas of growth and areas of challenge.

Teachers use a range of different assessment strategies and tools to gather evidence of student’s achievement with reference to the achievement standards in the Australian Curriculum. Based on the evidence, teachers make judgement to decide which grade matches the standard your child has achieved. Your child’s attendance is recorded on the report as attendance is recognized as an important indicator of student wellbeing, engagement and achievement. A student who is absent from school or continually arrives late to school often achieve lower grades than those who arrive at school on time and attend school regularly.

Comments will be provided for all subject areas to provide you with additional information on what the students are learning and their achievements in all curriculum areas. You will also see that the Personal and Social Capabilities are grouped according to our school values: - Respect, Achievement, Integrity and Sustainability. This allows us to integrate these into our everyday routines and daily practice at school, home and in the community.

Reception to Year 3 student’s scores will be provided for Reading Recovery levels (RR), Oxford Sight Words and Jolly Phonic Sounds. Each of these will have different scores depending on the benchmark for each year level as indicated below:

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD)

All schools are required to collect information about the numbers of students that they provide adjustments to under the Disability Discrimination Act (1992) and Disability Standards of Education.  This data is used as the basis for national funding. The NCCD involves the collection of:

·         the number of students receiving adjustments to enable them to participate in education on the same basis as other students

·         the level of adjustment provided to students

·         student’s type of disability if known

Under the model the definition of disability is broad and includes learning difficulties, health and mental health conditions. If your child is identified for inclusion in the Collection, the required information will be included in this year’s data collection.

If you have any questions about the data collection, please contact Sharon Willoughby, Lisa Horton or Carly Nash on 8270 4222.

Further information can be found at: http://www.education.gov.au/nationally-consistent-collection-data-school-students-disability

Science/STEM Donations

In Science/STEM we are regularly participating in hands-on STEM projects that require using recycled materials to design and make a particular product. There are a vast variety of materials we are seeking for our class projects this year and I am wondering whether any of these things could be recycled in your family homes for use in our STEM lessons. The materials we are in need of include the following:

  • Wool, silk, ribbon, cotton fabric, felt, cloths, any old clothing made from lycra, leather, silk, plastic, string, twine
  • Shoeboxes, cardboard boxes, tissue boxes, foam meat trays
  • Gladwrap, alfoil, paper towel tubes, PVC pipe lengths,
  • Plastic bottles especially 600ml and 2L, empty yoghurt containers, empty glass jars with lids if possible, plastic lids, ice cream containers, corks, small takeaway containers, plastic shopping bags, newspaper, seedlings

If you are able to donate any of these useful materials please drop your items to the Science/STEM room in the Spence Building. If I am not present in the room, please leave your donations at my classroom door or drop them to Jayne at the Front Office.
