Assistant Principal

As I write, we are preparing for a return to “the new normal” with all students and staff expected to resume classes from Monday 25 May.

The Delany community

When students return to school we will be aiming to balance business-as-usual with practical social distancing. The simplest way to achieve that is our hands off policy.  This usually refers to students “playing around” by pushing and/or shoving each other and generally being a bit silly… which sometimes escalates into a more serious push and shove. For the foreseeable future, hands off must also include shaking hands, hugging, leaning on each other, and even sharing of food and devices. We have already seen this week that another Sydney school has been closed because of a Covid-19 infection. We will take a practical approach to keep our students and staff safe, and that will also mean a firm approach when necessary.

The academic community

With the resumption of classes, the remote learning approach that we have used this term will change. Before, during and now after this period, the majority of course work has been posted to online sites (mostly Google classrooms) for students to access. This will continue. Online lessons (such as zoom lessons) will not continue.

As you child returns to regular classes, please continue to work with our staff and set high expectations of the classwork that is to be completed, and encourage that their application in class is cooperative and focused.

Mobile phones - not to be used at school

I am clarifying the College’s position on mobile phones following my information in the last newsletter.

Mobile phones will not be permitted at the College from this point. This is effective from Monday 25 May, and applies to both the yard and classrooms; it applies from the moment a student walks through the gate until the point at which they depart.

The College has a number of ipads or computers that have been available for student loan throughout the year, and we have increased this number during 2020. Where there is a genuine need for an IT device we will provide one in consultation with the family. None of the following excuses constitute a “genuine” need”: forgetting your device, forgetting to charge it, having it run out of charge during the day, or waiting for repairs for week after week.

When a student uses their phone in class the phone will be confiscated. On the first occasion, the phone will be returned to the student at the end of the day. On further occasions the phone will be returned to a parent (not to the student). “Using the phone” includes:

  • checking the time

  • checking messages

  • using it to access school work

  • making and receiving call

  • … and any other explanation you can think of.

Finally, if a student refuses to follow this policy, or refuses to hand over a phone when asked, we will follow the defiance procedure outlined in the College Dignity and Wellbeing policy (which can be found on the College website). In these rare cases, parents will be phoned and asked to come to the College.

Please contact me at the College if you want to discuss this expectation.

The Patrician community

I have spoken to Br Paul O’Keefe, the Patrician Australian Provincial leader, this week.  He reports that all the Brothers remain happy and healthy. St Patrick, continue to watch over them.

St Patrick, pray for us.

Mr Anthony Blomfield

Assistant Principal

Two giants of the Patrician family

At every College assembly we acknowledge the heritage of our Patrician brothers on whose hard work Delany is built. Within the past week, Brothers Patrick and Mark have celebrated milestones in their lives.

You will read below that both men, and all the Patrician Brothers, love being in schools.  Although neither taught at Patrician Brothers Granville (prior to its change to Delany College), both Brothers are regular visitors to our school. Here is just a small insight into their lives.

Mr Anthony Blomfield

Assistant Principal

Br Patrick Lovegrove - 70 years a Patrician

Brother Patrick was born to Edward and Mary in Manilla, New South Wales. He made his First Profession as a Patrician Brother on the 15th May, 1950. The ceremony took place at Holy Cross College.

Patrick was made for leadership and within five years found himself, at the age of twenty-three, the principal of the Brothers’ school at Waterloo.  In 1963 he was principal at Patrician Brothers College Blacktown, and then in 1966, principal of Holy Cross College.

That term was cut short when he was appointed Provincial of the Australian Province, a ministry he held for twelve years. Following close on the heels of this Australian role, Br Patrick was elected the International Leader of the Congregation in 1980 for a further eight years. He returned to Patrician Brothers College Blacktown as Principal in 1988 and remained there until 2005 when he retired from the classroom at the age of seventy-two.

He moved to the Brothers’ residence at Holy Cross in 2006 and has lived there ever since.

Br Mark Ryan - 60 years a Patrician

Brother Mark was born to George and Ellen in Werris Creek, New South Wales. He made his First Profession on the 22nd May, 1960.

Mark’s early education took place at West Maitland, Uranquinty, and Tocumwal: his father was a station master. In 1944, at the age of ten, he found himself a boarder at Holy Cross College.  When he left school in 1960 he studied chemistry and worked as an industrial chemist before joining the Brothers.

Another leader, in 1963 he became an integral part of the Patrician formation programme.  Then from 1968 to 1970 he was appointed Principal of Holy Cross College.  In 1972 he was moved to Patrician Brothers College Fairfield, and between 1987 to 1990 he was principal. He moved back to Holy Cross in 1991 and he is there to stay.

Throughout Mark’s life he has been an active and talented musician, and remains active in the parish of St Charles Ryde.

In his book, First You Write a Sentence, Joe Moran guides readers through elements of reading, writing and life.

Moran’s book recommends the pleasures of the well-made sentence, to writers and readers. For both, the sentence is the essential unit of expression.

A sentence is what you hold in your head, whether it be William Shakespeare or Dr Seuss. A sentence is where you make sense of the world.

Moran says, “A good sentence gives order to our thoughts and takes us out of our solitudes … A sentence should feel alive, but not stupidly hyperactive.” Moran suggests good habits.

To be able to judge what a good sentence is for yourself you just have to read and start writing, both good habits to develop.

For our Delany mums

Firstly, we hope all our mums in the Delany community had a lovely day on Sunday.

For some of us it was very different with the Covid19 restrictions, but I’m sure we all carried our mums in our hearts even if we were unable to be physically present on the day.

With our long standing tradition of May being the Month of Mary, Mother’s Day is also a great time to remember that as Catholics we can always go to Mary and confide our hopes, dreams, disappointments and challenges to her.

With this in mind, we have included two prayers especially for mums.

Secondly, we have attached an article which focuses on the home as the Church in these challenging times.

We are fortunate to be able to view Mass online but we can also revisit the ancient practice of our homes being meeting places to share our faith as well.

Year 11 Learning for Mission - Serving the Community

Every believer has received grace gifts, so use them to serve one another as faithful stewards of the many-coloured tapestry of God's grace. (1 Peter 4:10)

Year 11 students enrolled in the Learning for Mission Religious Education Course must complete 20 hours of community service. A small proportion of this requirement can be met by helping out in the school community.

This week students undertook a number of service tasks including selling coffee to Delany and Holy Trinity staff, and working to improve the environment by planting new seedlings in the College garden.

On Wednesday students made and sold hamburgers to fundraise for the Delany Foundation. Students were assisted by Miss Sarkhosh,

Mr Johnson and Miss Katrib. Serving others both within and outside of the school community is a core characteristic of followers of Jesus.

Well done Year 11 Mission.

Delany Fitness Club

In Week three the Delany Fitness Club started, students completed an online google form to register their interest in training days. During these sessions students are provided time to work on their muscular strength and endurance, along with developing power to transfer to a range of sports.

On Friday mornings the beginners club is for students who require an induction, for example, learning how to use the gym equipment and exercises they can perform to increase their athleticism.

Students are required to complete an ESSA pre-screening form and a gym participation induction form and waiver. These forms are available at the front office and on the google sports classroom page.

I highly encourage students to use this facility and available teachers to increase their levels of fitness and overall health and wellbeing.

A special thanks to the teachers who are making this initiative possible for our students and providing them with connection to a club and a sense of belonging. Miss Whitfield, Mr Johnson, Mr Peronace, Mr Karam and Mr Easton.

FOR MEDICAL ISSUES

Each year Delany College updates their records in order to keep your child healthy and safe in school and on excursions.

An important part of this process is having updated Health Care plans to let the school know about any allergies your child may have, for example Asthma or Anaphylaxis, and how staff should respond to your individual child's need.

These are updated each year to remain current so that any medical attention we administer to your child is consistent with their needs.

If your child has a new Health Care Plan please bring it to the Administration Office and ask that it be given to Mrs Collimore, Leader of Diverse Learning.
