TOKSAVE - Lihir International School

Term 1, Week 2, 2020

From the Principal

Dear Parents / Caregivers,

Students have made an excellent start to the 2020 school year. It has been heartening to see how committed the children have been from day one!  Thanks to our continuing students for making an effort to ensure our new students feel welcome and understand what it means to be a VIP student!

A special welcome to our first year 9 class at LIS. This is an exciting milestone for the school. A particular welcome goes to our first Lihirian scholarship students who have joined our year 9s.

Thanks also to all the parents who attended our Acquaintance Night on Thursday night! It was great to see so many families attending, along with new faces. Thank you to all teachers, assistant teachers and teacher aides for eagerly preparing for the new school year. It is our excellent teaching staff who make a real contribution to the successes that students at LIPS enjoy.

Welcome to Mr Kevin Collins who joins the LIS staff next week. Mr Collins will be teaching in the high school and the Work Ready Institute.

From the Deputy Principal

At Wednesday's Acquaintance Night, teachers shared how they manage their classrooms, including expectations for homework, as well as some consistent whole-school expectations. It has been great to see the majority of students wearing the correct uniform and taking pride in their appearance.

Please remember, if your child is absent, you need to either send a note/email or ring the school office to explain the absence. Teachers will be following up on unexplained absences.

Students from Years 1-6 can access the online program 'Reading Eggs' https://readingeggs.com  and students from Years 1-9 can access the Mathletics program https://login.mathletics.com . Prep will be able to access these in term 2. These are great programs to support your child's literacy and numeracy development. Please see your child's teacher if you need login details.

Sports Update

Soccer

A soccer program is being offered to all boys and girls in grades 3 – 6. The games will be held over a 4-week period beginning on Saturday 22nd February. Depending on interest, there may be an opportunity for students in other year levels, however, at this stage it is restricted to students in grades 3 – 6.  Ideally, students would take part in 30 – 40 mins of training/ warm-up activities and then play modified games (7-a-side) on the school oval. Students would be required to be at school ready to start at 8:30 am. The amount of games played would depend on numbers, however, we anticipate finishing around 10:30am

Afternoon Activities

In 2019, students were involved in a variety of afternoon and weekend sports and other activities. After school sport/activities are run by teaching staff and parent volunteers and, if you would like to volunteer to run a sport this year, please let me know. If you would like to run a sport/activity, it is your decision as to what sport/activity you are running, what day and which classes you will include in this sport/activity – our school community is always grateful to those who take the time to organise after school sport/activities.
