PRINCIPAL’S THOUGHTS

Messages from Mr Dill

Education Week 2022

The theme for our 2022 Education Week is 'Creating futures - education changes lives' as we celebrate all types of learning that occurs across our school and the NSW Education system each and every day.  Education Week will take place next term from Monday 1st Friday - Friday 5th August.

We will hold an open day for families with children in Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 on Tuesday 2nd August and an open day on Thursday 4th August for parents and grandparents with children in primary classes.

Other activities during the week will include a Book Fair, Art Showcase, and various items from the performing arts.  An overview of the program will be provided next week.

Smart Energy Schools Pilot Project

School Infrastructure NSW has announced that Drummoyne PS has been selected to take part in the NSW Government's Smart Energy Schools Pilot Project.

The project is the largest schools-based trial of solar, battery energy storage and Virtual Power Plant technology in Australia.

As one of 60 schools in the State, we will be able to generate, store and reuse energy and even share energy with the community.

Solar and battery storage systems will be installed on the roof of the school hall and COLA as part of the project.  We will also be able to access energy data from the systems via an online portal and use the data in teaching and learning activities in the school.

Premier's Spelling Bee

The finals for the Stage 2 and Stage 3 Premier's Spelling Bee competition will be held at the beginning of next term on Tuesday 26 July. Good luck to all of our finalists.

Road Safety

Given the location of our school at the intersection of busy streets, please take road safety seriously every day.

Safety Town is a suite of digital and non-digital teaching and learning activities to support the teaching of road safety from Kindergarten to Year 6 in NSW primary schools.

The website includes interactive activities, comprehensive teaching notes, links to relevant transport information, and updated information for parents and carers.

Safety Town helps parents to reinforce road safety messages and concepts that are taught at school. Please see the link below.

Class of the Week - 6M

Class 6M have been looking at the Australian Impressionist Frederick McCubbin's painting titled 'Lost' from 1886. Students used acrylics, impasto, watercolour crayons and charcoal to create their own interpretations of his work.

COVID SAFETY UPDATES

COVID-19 Update

Dear school community,

As we move into winter, NSW Health and the Department of Education would like to remind all parents, carers and the school community that now is the best time to protect your children against viral illnesses such as the flu and COVID-19 by staying home if unwell and getting vaccinated.

We urge all parents and carers to please keep your children at home if they are unwell.

Remember to use a rapid antigen test if your child is experiencing even mild COVID-19 symptoms and keep them home until they are well and free of any symptoms, even if their result is negative.

If your child's RAT result is positive, it must be reported through the Service NSW website or Service SNW app. For information on managing COVID-19 and isolating at home refer to the NSW Government's Testing positive to COVID-19 fact sheet.

Protecting your family from the flu and COVID-19 this winter

Flu and COVID-19 can be serious illnesses, even in children and teenagers. Both viruses can spread quickly when large numbers of people are in close contact, such as at school.

More people of all ages will be at risk this winter with international borders reopening, increased social mixing and lower exposure to flu over the past two years. Both the flu and COVID-19 are already circulating in the community, so it’s important that you don’t put off vaccination.

Flu vaccines are free for all NSW residents aged 6 months and older in the month of June, as part of the NSW Government's effort to combat this year's expected severe influenza season. We strongly recommend that families take advantage of this opportunity. Vaccinations are available through GPs and pharmacies, and can be safely received at the same time as a COVID-19 vaccination.

The COVID-19 vaccination remains a recommendation for everyone aged 5 years and over, and is also available through GPs and pharmacies.

Drop off and Pick up Zone

Drummoyne Public School has a 'Drop off and Pick up Zone' on Thompson Street for your convenience and for your child’s safety.

Designed for quick entry and exit, the zone minimises congestion and risk when used properly by all parents and carers. The zone operates under the same conditions as no parking zones, which means you may stop to drop off or pick up children for a maximum of 2 minutes. You are required to remain in, or within 3 metres of, your vehicle.

The zone operates between 8.00am – 9.30am and 2.30pm - 4.00pm. Please remain with your vehicle during these times and stay no longer than 2 minutes so other parents may also safely drop off or pick up their children.
