Principal's Report

Tuesday 7th February 2023

Hello Everyone,

I hope that you have all had a lovely week. We have made a change this week to the layout of the newsletter. The “Important Events” calendar will now appear at the start of the newsletter, rather than at the end of it, to help you know what is happening in the school.

We have had a lovely first week of school and everyone seems very settled. It is lovely to head into the classrooms to see the great learning already happening.

Yesterday all students did a review about school crossing safety, following discussions with the casual crossing supervisors who have been manning the crossing this week. I have spoken to the Local Laws department at the Macedon Ranges Shire, and they will be advertising a permanent position for the school in the next couple of weeks. Until then, we will have a range of different supervisors helping us out. All the casual crossing supervisors expressed concern about both parent and student behaviours. Could I please remind you all, that everyone should use the school crossing and not just walk across the road? Please do not cross the road until the supervisor blows their whistle. Cross directly over the road and please do not veer off and walk along the side of the road. It is important that we model this behaviour to students to help keep them safe. There was an incident at the crossing yesterday, which reminds us all to take this matter seriously.

On Friday 17th February our parent group, Friends of the School is organising a Welcome BBQ to be held at the school from 5.30pm – 7.30pm. We invite all families to come along and share a BBQ and some time together with other families from the school. This is always a really nice night, and I would love to see you there.

I would like to congratulate our Grade 6 students who have been appointed into their whole school leadership roles for 2023.

School Captains – Lachlan G and Wil J

Technology Leader – Pasco T-A

Buddy Leaders – Xanthe B and Seraphina F

School Reporter – Harriet Q

House Captains – Caitlyn K (Kulin House-green) and Harry H (Mitchell House -yellow)

Welfare Captain – Curtis S

Junior School Council President – Joel M

Over the coming weeks, we will introduce you to each of these students in this newsletter and they will explain their leadership roles. Congratulations to them all. I’m really looking forward to working with them all.

Please don’t forget that we have our School Swimming Sports at Woodend Pool this Friday 10th. You are all welcome to come along and bring a picnic and enjoy the day with us. The weather looks like it will be beautiful. Hopefully we will see you there.

On Friday 17th I will be holding a Parent Reading Helpers session in the school library at 9 -9.45am. If you would like to work in the school listening to children read (and we would LOVE to have you come along and help), then it would be good if you could attend this session, if you have not done one before. For our new parents, it’s also a great opportunity to ask me questions that you have about the school now that your child has started here.

Please remember that my door is open to catch up with you if you have any questions, concerns or ideas for the school!!

Have a wonderful week.

Kind Regards,

Trish

From the Office

Hello and welcome back to school everyone! We hope you all had a lovely restful break and enjoyed the warm summer weather (finally!!).

It's been great to see everyone back for 2023, we are sure it will be a busy but fun and exciting year for our students, especially our new Foundation students who we welcome to the school today.

A few notices and reminders:

Student Book Packs

Thank you to everyone for being patient with us during collection day.  It all seemed to go smoothly.  If you are missing any items from your order, please let the office know asap so we can sort out any issues quickly.

If you are yet to complete payment, this can be found on Qkr!   If you prefer to pay BPay or Direct Deposit, please contact the office for details.

Working With Childrens Check

Throughout the year we are fortunate to have many volunteers for various activities.  As a formality we must remind all families of the Working with Childrens Check requirements.

As per Department of Education and school policy visitors and volunteers working with our children must hold a valid Working with Childrens Check card prior to attending the school.  Please refer to the Volunteer Policy on the school website for more information.

If you currently hold a WWCC card, please ensure you have added Mount Macedon Primary School as a volunteer organisation (scroll down the bottom or the page to enter up to 4 organisations).  Once the school is added to your WWCC profile, an official letter from the Department of Justice confirming your registration will be mailed to the school.

Here is a link to the WWCC website https://www.workingwithchildren.vic.gov.au/

Late Arrival, Early Departure and Absence

A reminder that the late book and early departure's book is located at the front reception foyer. We appreciate parents filling this out, as it is important to ensure accurate attendance records for your children, and is also used in the event of an emergency.

If your child/ren are absent, please leave a message on the school absence line as early as possible.

Update details forms were sent out last week. Thank you to those parents who have completed and returned. A reminder to all who have yet to return, please ensure you check and update any changes to your family details and return as soon as possible. Wellbeing News 2023

Hello!

Here we are starting a new year and I wanted to share a few well-being resources which may help all of us during this time of change.

In other news, we are currently creating a Well-being space near the library. This area will be specifically designed for all students to find support and develop strategies to help them to regulate and understand their emotions, connect to others and transition back into the classroom.

This room will be resourced to support staff to develop students Social and Emotional learning, in either 1:1 or in small group. You can find more information about our Well-being and Inclusive approaches on our school website.

I will be continuing to work on Tuesday and Wednesday as the Well-being and Inclusion Co-ordinator, so please seek me out in person or you can email me at Olivia.desormeaux@education.vic.gov.au if you wish to chat.

Foundation 2023

Last week was the very first week of school for our newest students in Foundation, and what an exciting week it was. Activities included meeting and spending some time with their Buddies, learning and fine tuning their numbers, and meeting Mr Flynn, our STEM teacher and having their first Science lesson. Today they also get to take home their first library books, how exciting! It was a big first week for the students, but we have no doubt they will find their feet very quickly and will settle into school routine comfortably. From all accounts, they had a lot of fun getting to know their classmates, and becoming familiar with their new learning environment.

School Crossing Education

As the newest members of our school, it is important for our Foundation students to learn all about school crossing safety. Last week, Mrs Bowen and our school crossing supervisor gave our Foundation and Grade 1 students a lesson on how to approach and navigate a school crossing safely. They all had a few practice runs using the crossing, and did very well to take in all the important information on how to stay safe, alert, and cross the road with care. Well done everyone!

STEM Update

This week in STEM the students had an introductory activity that got everyone laughing and jumping up and down as their paper horses raced down the table tops! They experimented with different leg lengths, sizes and shapes. What a fun way to start the year in STEM!

MMPS Swimming Carnival 2023

This Friday 10th February we will be holding the MMPS Swimming carnival at the Woodend Outdoor Swimming Pool. The weather is set to be nice and warm, so it looks like it will be a great day of fun and competition. Please ensure students arrive to school on time for the day, as the bus will be leaving MMPS at 9.15am. Students will need to have a hat and spare T-shirt to wear between events. Please pack a healthy lunch, snacks, plenty of water and don't forget to apply sunscreen before coming to school. Students please come dressed in house colours GREEN (Kulin) and YELLOW (Mitchell). Students will be back at school for pick up at 3.30pm.

Lunch Orders

Lunch Orders from Red Door cafe in Macedon will continue on a Wednesday and Friday. In the coming weeks we will be moving to an online system for ordering, however for the time being please continue to use the cash and paper bag system as per last year. Please find below the menu and orders instructions.

Sushi Mondays!

Sushi Monday's is back for 2023. Orders are to be placed via QKR only, no cash. Orders will close at 9am on the Monday morning of delivery. The Sushi menu is available on QKR! If you have not yet registered for the QKR! app, please find the link below and for those without access to a smart phone, a web-based version of QKR! is available at:  https://qkr-store.qkrschool.com/store

Hats in Term 1, 2023

Just a reminder to ensure that students have their hats to wear at school during recess and lunchtimes, as well as any other outdoor activities they may be participating in. It is important that we are all being sun smart and ensuring our children are protected from the harmful UV light that is at it's highest peak during the months of August to April, where UV index levels regularly reach 3 or above. Please also remember to name your children's hats as they quite often are lost, misplaced or left in the playground and it is handy to know who the hat belongs to!

Guitar Lessons 2023

Aaron Moar has been teaching guitar students at Mount Macedon Primary School for the last 8 years. He is keen to meet some new students who are interested in learning how to play, and continue working with current students for 2023. Aaron is a qualified teacher and has been teaching guitar for over 15 years. He conducts group lessons at the school, and teaches students of all levels and classes. His lessons are fun and interactive, where the students learn to play both modern and traditional tunes to practise their skills and technique. If you would like to enquire about guitar lessons for your child, please contact Aaron on 0438 177 764 or email: aaronmoar@infinitesound.com.au or see flyer below.
