Delany College - Granville

Newsletter Term 3 Week 1

Paul Easton

Acting Principal

Assistant Principal

A very warm welcome as we return for Term 3 at Delany College. As I write, our local community and suburbs are facing the prospect of COVID-19 creating uncertainty. I want to assure you that we continue to follow the guidelines being published by the Department of Health. At this moment, staff are required to socially distance while they work in our staff rooms. Although there are no directions with respect to students at this stage, there are a number of hand sanitising stations available for everyone throughout the College. The health and safety of all is our first priority at this point - and in equal first place remains the key objective of student learning and growth.

Do not hesitate to contact us if you have any concerns or questions.

The Delany community

The College returns to normal operation this term. Students should be in full winter uniform. The winter uniform DOES NOT include the sports jacket, and this should not be worn.

The day commences at 8:45am and concludes at 3:05pm.

For the first six weeks of the term, students in years 7 to 10 will be participating in sporting activities on Thursday afternoons between 1pm - 3pm (and be dismissed from school at the usual time).  Students in years 7 - 10 are required to wear the school sports uniform; students in years 11 and 12 are also invited to wear either the winter or sports uniform for the day.

These sporting afternoons will culminate in the College Athletics carnival to be held on Monday 31 August. More information will follow.

The academic community

This term is the beginning of the end for our Year 12 students. This is the final full term of learning at Delany, and the countdown is now on as these students approach their graduation on Tuesday 22 September. Between now and then they have to face Trial HSC exams in weeks 5 and 6, and more importantly we hope, have a brilliant final term with friends and teachers. Please keep our Year 12 students in your thoughts and prayers.

The Patrician community

Please keep in your prayers all the Patrician communities around the world. Many of the schools are in vulnerable communities and face the threat of COVID-19. Our fundraising efforts attached to Multicultural Day will support the Delany Foundation and their work in these schools and other communities.

St Patrick, pray for us.

Awards

At the conclusion of each semester we ask the Learning Leaders of each course to identify those students who have been placed in the top 3. In the list below we acknowledge the skill and hard work that lies behind this achievement. Only students from Years 7 to 11 are included - the Year 12 students are almost at the conclusion of their courses and will be acknowledged during their graduation assembly.
Certificates of achievement will be distributed next Wednesday after our school assembly.

Congratulations to all

Words, Words, Words

People need a rich vocabulary that grows through using language for speaking, reading and writing. Students exposure to language is vital which is why schools encourage students to:

  • Read:  Reading a variety of texts is typical on an average school day. It is through reading this variety of texts that students can learn new information, see various ways authors communicate their ideas and add words to their vocabulary.

  • Write:  Writing improves reading comprehension and reading fluency. Written language is literally a secret code that someone made up to represent spoken sounds. The more students think about and practice the code in written form, the better they will be at understanding the same code in writing.

  • Speak:  Speaking with confidence and authority is a learned skill. Students are encouraged to improve their speaking skills through collaborative activities, talking to their peers to solve problems and present solutions. Participating in conversations, presentations and debates aids in developing clear communication skills.

  • Religious Education

Lord, show us your mercy and love.

(Psalm 84/95) This is the responsorial psalm for today as I write this brief report for the newsletter. With Covid19 continuing in our world it is a fitting reminder that we can always call on our loving God to assist us with our daily struggles and challenges as students, parents and teachers.

    Our Amazing senior students

Students in HSC Studies of Religion (SOR 1 and SOR II) studied marriage in Judaism and Christianity as the significant practice.

Part of learning about the key values and ceremony in each tradition involved students researching and then dramatising a wedding ceremony. The originality and effort shone through in each group’s performance. Well done, Year 12 SOR 2020.

Meanwhile Year 11 SOR students have been learning about the key variants within the Jewish tradition and they presented media interviews where each student took on the persona of one of the variants. Their performances were credible and engaging and Year 11 SOR 2020 should also be proud of their efforts and achievement.

HSC Study Day on the Holidays

Monday 6 July, Studies of Religion I and II students were invited to a study day here at the college to help them prepare for the upcoming HSC Trials and HSC Examination. Students revised the format of the examinations and content from the units studied.

The attitude of students was fantastic, it was a real pleasure to spend time with them. They engaged in the revision quizzes, brainstorming and highlighting of key points from past questions. All students are encouraged to be revising now for the upcoming trial examinations. Remember that the NESA website is an invaluable aid to students containing the syllabus, past exams and model responses.

Semester 1 Report follow up: Years 7-10

All junior students are encouraged to sit down with their parents and review their results from Semester 1. Goal setting for this semester is very important. Students should look at the outcomes they achieved well in and set goals for how they can improve in RE this semester. Remember that the semester system provides the opportunity to start again with new topics, learning experiences and assessment tasks.

Trialling the Draft New RE Curriculum at Delany

Each school in the Diocese of Parramatta has written a unit which they will run this term in their schools. At Delany we will be running a unit in our Year 10 RE classes. The unit is called “Dialogue & Encounter: Are there conflicts that dialogue and encounter can’t resolve?”

We are looking forward to teaching this dynamic unit of work and to our students’ feedback as the unit progresses.

Wishing all students and their parents a happy and rewarding Term 3, 2020.

    The trouble here today,

there is something I'd like to say.

As these days are so long,

    we have to stand strong.

    It won't be long,

until this virus will be gone,

so spread kindness and love in the air

Write a book in a day

As preparations begin and teams are set up for challenge day students of Delany College have demonstrated their artistic capabilities by submitting some of their artworks. This year, I am proud to say Delany will be entering eight teams into the Write a Book in a Day competition, the most we have ever entered. Updated Health Care Plans & Medical Information

If your child has any type of allergy or Asthma please make sure you have an updated Health Care Plan or Asthma Action Plan from your doctor.

Without this Health Care Plan the school can not provide the appropriate medical treatment should your child become ill. The school updates their Excursion Risk Assessments from the Health Care Plan you provide to the school.

If your child takes medication on a regular basis the school will also need a letter from your local doctor or specialist indicating the medications taken, recommended dosage and time of the day this medication is consumed.

This is to ensure that should your child need to be treated by an ambulance or doctor in an emergency situation, the school can provide the relevant details. Please hand in all Health Care Plans to the Administration office and request that the plan be passed onto Mrs Collimore.
