St John the Baptist Ferntree Gully Newsletter

Letter from the Principal

Tuesday March 17th 2020

Dear Families

This week we celebrate Catholic Education Week. Whilst many events have been cancelled due to the coronavirus it doesn’t stop us from reflecting on how blessed we are to be part of our Catholic community of St John the Baptist and the wider Catholic community in the Archdiocese of Melbourne.

Choosing the right education for your child is one of the most important decisions you'll ever make. Our school offers a unique educational experience which forms the child or young person in our care as a person of integrity, compassion, faith and wisdom. We work closely with our broader parish community to enhance our students’ capacity to make sense of their world, to make judgements and to recognise the uniqueness of others within a faith community.

Our school has a supportive community of teachers, parents, carers, P&F committees, clergy, parishioners, and support staff who work together to focus on students; encouraging success, promoting discipline, supporting creativity and instilling compassion. This means that our school  doesn’t just teach religious studies, we seek to develop spirit, mind, body and character and cultivate Gospel values that support lives filled with joy, endeavour and hope in the future.

At St John the Baptist we have a commitment to focusing on each individual child’s ability to flourish to be the best version of themselves.

I wish all in our community every blessing during this year's Catholic Education week.

School Closure Day

Our Term 1 school closure day will take place tomorrow Wednesday 18th March. The staff will be involved in a Professional Development Day. There will be no school for the children on this day.

Coronavirus (COVID-19) Update

As this newsletter goes to print schools are expected to remain open. Should this directive change  we will inform our community immediately. In the event that our school is asked to close our staff will provide ideas for home learning.

Cancellation - School Working Bee

Our school working bee was scheduled for this  Saturday the 21st March. We have made the decision to cancel this event to minimise the unnecessary gathering of people in our community due to (COVID-19).

Absentees

If your child is absent from school it is a requirement that you inform the school either before or on the day of their absence. Any family who has a child who is away from school with an unexplained absence will be contacted via a phone call. You can communicate your child’s absence in the following ways:

  • Written note to your child’s teacher

  • Verbal message to your child’s teacher

  • Message via the skoolbag app

  • Phone Call to the school office

Swimming Champions

After a long and hard fought out time representing our school and themselves, our SJB swim team has done the school very proud. With early morning training sessions at St Josephs College and under the watchful eye of our esteemed coach Tracey Ryan
We started off our campaign with great numbers on a cold and wet day in Belgrave, with new and experienced swim competitors and some participating in competition for the first time.
With great enthusiasm a great number of SJB swimmers proceeded to the next round at Division in Ringwood at  Aquanation. For many this was the first time swimming in a competition in a full length 50 metre pool. Yet again our steely determined swimmers took to the challenge and proved that it is possible to achieve great feats and also overcome the fear of competition and distance. Some of the SJB swim team swam out of their depth and skins to make the next round, Regionals, again held at Ringwood Aqunation. Once again our big representation of SJB swimmers did an outstanding effort representing our community and themselves proudly. With a very strong competition the SJB swim team unfortunately didn't proceed to the next round.
However after every event there were always smiles and high fives given between swimmers, other competitors and supporters. Well done to everyone on a great 2020 swim carnival. Good luck next year and keep up the smiles.
