Wednesday 1 July 2020, Term 2 Week 10

Principal's Message

The end of term has come and we are finishing up this term with our PBL rewards day on Friday. Students have been working so well and have earned lots of Mac money to go towards the end of term reward. Students have chosen the “milkshakes and movies” reward so to make it a little more special we are setting up screening areas around the school with students being able to pick the movie they wish to watch, just as if going to the cinemas.

While at-school learning didn’t resume effectively until week 5, we have seen a great 5 weeks of learning in classrooms. Looking at the reading levels of our students in Kinder to Year 2 we can see the growth made over the last five weeks. We’re looking forward to getting into a non-interrupted Term 3 and really driving literacy and numeracy growth across the school.

Yesterday, our executive team got the opportunity to work with Paul McDermott, Principal from Blue Haven Public School. Mr McDermott and his school has received numerous awards over the last few years for their growth in literacy and numeracy and he is currently working with the Literacy and Numeracy Directorate. We were able to review our current school processes through the teaching and learning cycle in Literacy and Numeracy to look for areas to strengthen and improve. With a few new ideas in assessment and monitoring of student growth we are backed to continue our already strong practices of teaching and intervention in place.

Final works being completed!

We’re on the home stretch with construction and the builders are powering along with the refurbishment works to the two classrooms in the top block. Works will continue over the holidays and I have fingers, toes and eyelashes crossed that all works will be completed before the end of the holidays. It is my hope that we return for next term with all construction completed. Given that the project end date was for the end of 2020, this will be a very welcomed early completion.

There is an official department photographer coming into the school during the holidays to capture photos, video and drone footage of the new school structures and learning environments.  These will all be released early into the term so community can have a better look at the new fit-out.

New school plan - 2021

We’re coming to the end of our current school plan which has been driving our direction for the last three years. Over the course of next term I will be reaching out to get ideas and thoughts for our next school plan. When writing our last one we didn’t even know the new build was coming so a lot has changed in that time. Just in the last week we have also had news of the curriculum review and the move to reduce the ”crowded curriculum”  back to core focuses on literacy and numeracy.

One of the first areas we will be looking at is our school vision. The current school vision is:

Speers Point Public School aims to empower our students to thrive, connect and succeed through a positive and holistic wellbeing approach. Staff are dedicated to delivering quality education through best teaching practices and personalised learning in an environment that engages all students. Our students, staff and community are highly valued and have a strong sense of belonging through supportive and respectful relationships that value inclusivity.

Early next term we will begin the process around if this vision still suits to drive us for the next school plan cycle, or if it needs updating, or possibly re-writing altogether. As important members of our school community we are keen to hear your voice as our school moves forward.

Any changes for Term 3 to restrictions

At this time we have had no change in restrictions for our school. There were a number of items “for consideration” including parents on school grounds but we have had no further information. If and when that comes through we’ll be communicating it to you and welcoming parents on site once again. P&C are looking to have canteen operating for Term 3 (following their requirements) which is something we have greatly missed over these last five weeks.

In retrospect, it has been another enormous term. At-home and at-school learning, movement and transition to new buildings, ongoing construction to existing rooms etc has been a great undertaking on everyone’s part. Again, I would like to thank our parents and community for their unwavering support, understanding and encouragement in this time.

We are eager to have the official opening for the school next term and waiting on news for any official visitors once restrictions have lifted. Stay tuned for that one.

Enjoy the holidays. Term 3 starts for students on Tuesday 21st July.

Parents & Citizens update

Hello SPPS families,

We have some AWESOME news.

Canteen is back!

Yes, the canteen will re-open on Wednesday, Week 1 of Term 3.

Though things will be a little different. All our volunteers will be following the new School Canteens Covid-19 guidelines (for more information on these guidelines please see links below). We will be providing volunteers with all the information they need in regards to these new rules.

We will do our best to ensure that the canteen is open twice a week. However, we expect volunteers to follow NSW Health advice and stay home if they are unwell. This means that unless we have backup volunteers for the day, canteen operations may be disrupted.

So, if you, a grandparent, your best friend or even your neighbour can volunteer or are willing to go on our emergency backups list, this will greatly reduce the possibility of our canteen having to close last minute for the day.

If you are new to canteen volunteering, we will buddy you with one of our long-term volunteers to get you comfortable. To register your interest, seek further information or to sign up, go to https://signup.com/go/VYvidZS or email  speerspointcanteen@gmail.com.

Canteen Upgrade

Are you, or someone you know, a HANDY PERSON, a JOINERY, BUILDER, CARPENTER, ELECTRICIAN, PLUMBER or anything that can assist us in a quick makeover of our little space?   Some examples of the works required may include:

  • fixing the shutters & flyscreen's

    • re-aligning/installing new locks on entry doors & gates

      • re-shuffling/moving storage cupboards/fridges/freezers

        • creating a safe space to install an oven

          • a lick of paint

Works need to be completed by professional trades,  as all works are under the approval and requirements of the Departments Assets Management Unit as the canteen is a school facility.

We would like to gain some advice, some quotes and ultimately put together a proposal to get this project happening as soon as possible. If you can help please email us at:  speerspointpublicschool@pandcaffiliate.org.au
