Rozelle Public School Newsletter

TERM TWO WEEK TEN

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Rozelle is a place where Aboriginal children learned, played and celebrated their culture for thousands of years on this beautiful, natural land. As we learn, play and celebrate together on this land, we honour the Wangal people of the Eora nation and pay our respects to elders both past, present and emerging.

SEMESTER ONE… IT’S A WRAP!

Today we reach the halfway point of the year with Semester One coming to a close. Although there have been some challenges, especially with the never ending run of wet weather and the impacts of COVID, there have been many highlights and achievements.

The year began with Kindergarten successfully transitioning to school and very quickly the school formed 22 classes. As students settled into the new school year the run of extreme wet weather played havoc with planned activities and events. There was minor flooding across the site which led to our preschool being closed for two days. The swimming carnival was postponed and the school had to submit a Zone Team based on times provided by students. It all worked out with Rozelle winning the Balmain Zone Schools’ carnival. We were eventually able to have our school carnival at Drummoyne Pool which was a great success with high participation rates.

Despite the impacts of COVID on staff and students, it was great to have the band, strings choir and dance rehearsals commence. Performing arts programs were particularly impacted by COVID over the past two years and we have certainly missed them at Rozelle.

This term has also been a busy and successful period for the school. The Colour Run was a highlight for many of us. The excitement of our students could be heard across the suburb as they were covered in bursts of coloured dye. It was a great way to start the term.

PSSA has recommenced this year after last year’s cancellation. Our senior students are certainly enjoying the opportunity to compete against other local schools in soccer, netball and touch football. They have had great results and continue to demonstrate sportsmanship and teamwork.

After a two year interruption, the Inner West Debating Competition has resumed. Our debating team has shown significant improvement in their debating skills. Not only are they presenting prepared arguments, they are also rebutting their opponents points of view. This requires good listening skills and quick thinking. Thank you to Mrs Horton and Mrs Taylor for your work with our debaters.

Over the past fortnight our Year 2 & 3 students have been participating in a two week swim school at Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre. This is the first time in two years that we have been able to run this program and in just a short space of time, the swimming ability of our students has improved significantly. Staff who have attended have been very impressed by the quality of tuition provided by the swimming instructors. Thank you to Mrs Ronsen for your detailed organisation.

This week, your child’s Semester One report was sent home. I hope they provided you an insight into your child’s progress across the semester. Mrs Svinos and I particularly enjoyed reading the general comments and learning more about your child, their strengths, qualities, achievements and suggested areas for growth.

Wishing all our community a happy and healthy winter break.

NAIDOC WEEK

NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia in the first week of July each year. Across the week, we celebrate and recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for all Australians to learn about First Nations cultures and histories and participate in celebrations of the oldest, continuous living cultures on earth. While NAIDOC Week falls during the school holidays, students will participate in a range of activities, planned by teachers, on their return to school.

EDUCATION WEEK

Next term public schools across NSW will celebrate Education Week. Rozelle will have a schedule of events and activities which parents are welcome to attend including: band, choir and dance rehearsals; open classrooms and the schools athletics carnival. More details will be shared with the community in the first week of next term. Education Week is from Monday 1 to Friday 5 August.

ATHLETICS CARNIVAL - CHANGE OF DATE

Please note in your calendar that we have had to change the date of the school’s athletics carnival. The new date is Wednesday 3 August 2022 at King George’s Oval. More information to come next term.

STAFFING UPDATE!

Next term we welcome Mr Tim Hartnett to the school who will be taking on the teaching responsibilities of 5 Amalfi. Mrs Alison Perestrelo will be commencing her maternity leave and I would like to acknowledge her effort over the past 18 months. To ensure a smooth transition, Mrs Perestrelo and Mr Hartnett will co-teach for the first week of Term Three.

Miss Horton will also be taking some leave next term. Starting Week One, Miss Horton will work four days / week, taking leave each Friday. Joining the Kindergarten team is Mrs Melissa Clarke who is a very experienced educator. Melissa will teach Kindy Kyoto each Friday for the duration of the term.

SEMESTER TWO - LOTS TO LOOK FORWARD TOO!

While we are all looking forward to the two week winter vacation, there is certainly lots to look forward to next term. Some highlights include:

  • Education Week - 1-5 August

  • Athletics Carnival - 3 August

  • Iron Cove Performing Arts Festival 11 August

  • Book Week - 22-26 August

  • Stage Three Camp - 31 August - 2 September

  • Year Four Camp - 7-9 September

  • Year Six Production - 15 September

REMINDER ABOUT MORNING DROP OFF

Families are reminded that students should not be arriving at school before 8.30am unless they are attending OSH Club or a before school activity such as band rehearsal. There may be occasions where you need to drop your child off 10 minutes earlier. In these instances, students must go to the Peace Garden, where they sit and wait for teacher supervision to begin. Over the past few weeks, some students have been turning up to school as early as 7.45am. This is too early as supervision does not begin until 8.30am.

BABY NEWS!

Congratulations to Mr Kwok who welcomed baby Remi Joan into the world last Monday. According to Mr Kowk, Millie (Remi Joan’s) big sister was very excited to meet the newest member of the Kwok family. Mr Kowk is on paternity leave and will return next term. I would like to thank Ms Genion who has been teaching 4 Olympia over the past fortnight.

FILM BY THE CITY

Here’s a chance to make your own film for this year’s Film by the City Festival which is open to all students from Kinder to Year 12.

Your finished film has to be submitted by Term 3, Week 7 (Wednesday 31 August) and you’ll need a signed consent form from your parents. (We can help with this and you can email me anytime with questions carol.sheppard@det.nsw.edu.au).

There will be a premiere film event for the finalists in a George Street Cinema on Tuesday 25 October.

There are a few other things to know before you get started……

  • Your film can be up to 3 & half minutes (no more than!) INCLUDING credits
  • It must be a G rating
  • Only include students’ first names
  • It has to be submitted as MP4 file format

RECENT NEWS & ACTIVITIES

LEARN TO SWIM PROGRAM

Years 2 and 3, from non-swimmers to squaddies, have been refining their swimming skills for the last two weeks of Term 2, under the watchful eye of the Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre swim instructors. It has been a marvellous experience for them. They have all made amazing progress and can now swim like schools of fish!  Thank you to our teachers and parent volunteers who helped each day.

WHEELY GOOD MUSIC SHOW

Students from Sydney Secondary College (SSC) Band visited Rozelle to participate in a workshop with our Stage 3 Band students. Students from both bands rehearsed prepared pieces with the SSC IMP conductor before performing the beautiful music to all Stage 3 students. This was a great opportunity to strengthen our connection with Sydney Secondary College and for students to see the high calibre of both band programs. Congratulations to those band students who performed on the day.

One of the many highlights was having a Q&A session with renowned artist Daniel Boyd and writing poetry inspired by his artworks. Students also met and established relationships with curators and educators and participated in artmaking workshops.

6 HAVANA POETRY

Over the past few weeks, Year 6 Havana have explored various forms of poetry to learn about how it is used to capture the essence of an object, feeling or thought. We have been experimenting with literary devices and language features to convey a range of emotional states, and to spark action on social issues that are important to us. Below are a few samples of our SLAM and Emotion poetry for you to enjoy.

P&C SOCIAL & FUNDRAISING

SOCIAL & FUNDRAISING TEAM

Term 2 was a busy one with many P&C events. We would like to say another big thank you to all the volunteers who helped to make each one such a success, including the 40+ parents who contributed their time to throw dye, mix slime, wear the Chester the Cheetah suit and collate the colour run prizes for students. Parent volunteers sourced and donated prizes for our Trivia Night hampers and raffles, set up tables and chairs and marked the answer sheets on the night. We also had parent and students donate their time (and baked goods!) to support the fundraising efforts of the school band and the Year 6 farewell on polling day for the Federal Election.

Thank you to everyone who has supported our P&C events – we can’t do it without you!

UPCOMING CAKE STALL

The next fundraising cake stall at Rozelle Collectors Market will be hosted by our preschool classes. Please come along and support their fundraising efforts on Saturday August 6th (Week 3).
