McAuley Catholic College Newsletter

Term 1, Week 2 - 7th February 2020

From the Principal

Dear Parents, Staff and Students,

Welcome to the 2020 school year! It is with great pleasure that I welcome all our students and staff to McAuley Catholic College, especially our 120 new year 7’s, our new students in years 8, 9, 10 & 11 and our new staff whom I will introduce further on in the newsletter.

As I am new to the position of Principal I would like to briefly introduce myself to the community.  I am very proud to be appointed as the Principal of a school I love and believe in. I need to add here that I am also proud to be the first female Principal of the school since amalgamation in 1990. I hope this inspires others in their journey.  I have been at the school for 18 years, 11 as the Assistant Principal. I have close ties to the school and the community as I grew up in the Clarence Valley and I am a former student of St Mary’s College and Holy Spirit College - two of the schools that amalgamated to form McAuley. I have 26 years of teaching experience in Catholic Diocesan, Catholic Independent and Public School systems.  I have also worked outside the education sector and I have various life experiences that have helped me become the person I am today, which includes living in Lahore, Pakistan for almost four years. My main areas of teaching are Science and RE but I have also taught Maths, Careers & Agriculture. I have held numerous Leadership positions including Year Coordinator, House Leader, Leader of RE, Leader of School Evangelisation and Assistant Principal. I have a love of learning and am currently undertaking further study. In addition to all of this I am a mother to 2 daughters, a daughter, a sister, an aunt and a friend to many. I believe it is all these experiences, plus my love of and dedication to the College, my knowledge of who we are and my belief in us and what we can achieve, that will ensure I am a servant leader and a worthy Principal of MCC.

My vision for the College:

That McAuley Catholic College will journey strongly and confidently into the future as a distinctive Catholic Community centred on Christ and formed by the Mercy and Marist charisms. With Christ and our traditions as our basis, my vision is that MCC is authentic, inclusive, student focused, Christ centred  and full of learning experiences that prepare our students for the future and enable them to grow as a person and to reach the fullness of life.

Under my leadership, I will strive to make McAuley Catholic College a place where students, families and staff can experience Christ’s love, compassion, joy and humility, and our students leave as “Good People” to do great things and make a difference in this world.

In summary, I wish to be a witness and a servant leader, to bring stability, continuity &  knowledge to the College, and consolidate what we have been doing, as we move forward into the future as a high functioning Catholic learning community.

“Our life spreads light when it is given in service. The secret of joy is living to serve.”  - Pope Francis

So that is a little bit about me. In the next newsletter I will elaborate further on areas and projects  I wish to focus on. Thank you to the many people who have offered me congratulations and best wishes, and welcomed me into this leadership position. I can only hope I live up to your expectations. Thank you to Aaron Beach for the guidance and support he gave me and his leadership of the College in 2019. Thank you, also, to Fr Joe Holloway for his ongoing support of the College. It is always a pleasure to have him in the school and for the pastoral assistance he offers to all.

Welcome to Year 7 Breakfast and Assembly

Our Year 7 students started on Wednesday 29 January and it was fantastic to see 120 brand new students ready to become part of the community. The day started with a meet and greet BBQ breakfast followed by a welcome assembly. We were overwhelmed by the response from parents who came for breakfast and stayed for the assembly. The students were presented with a College badge to acknowledge their entry to the MCC community. It was a very special morning and I thank everyone who participated in the event. Our Yr 7 coordinator, Sarah Nichols, has elaborated further in the newsletter on Year 7 and their start to the year.

Congratulations to Dean Chapman - Finalist in the BHP Foundation Science and Engineering Awards.

Investiture Mass for Bill and Peter Dougherty

Congratulations to Mr Bill Dougherty and Mr Peter Dougherty on receiving the Papal Honour of the Knight of the Order of Saint Gregory the Great, in acknowledgement of their service and contribution to the Catholic Church and the community - which includes our College.  A beautiful Mass was celebrated by Bishop Greg Homeming to commemorate this occasion. A number of staff and our School Captains attended the Mass in recognition of Bill and Peter’s achievements.

After the Mass our Leaders - Rachel, Quinnlan, Laura and Joel - had the opportunity to meet Bishop Greg and have a photo together.

Commencement Mass

Our Hall was full on Wednesday as we celebrated our Opening Mass for the year, concelebrated by Fr Emmanuel Okparanaku and Fr Joe Holloway. The students were very respectful as they entered the hall, which was transformed into a Sacred Space. Well done and thank you to our musicians and choir students. We now need to work on student participation through their response and singing!

Changes to to Policy and Procedure - Mobile Phone, Jewellery and PE Changing

We have made a concerted effort in 2019 to listen to our students and make some changes in various areas of the College. Three areas where we have made changes are our Mobile Phone Policy and Procedure, Jewellery - in particular nose studs, and procedure about changing into and out of PE Uniform at the start and end of the day.

  • Our Pastoral Care Coordinator, Rob Imeson, has more information on mobile phones and their management at school in this newsletter and a copy of the updated policy and procedure is included for your perusal.

  • The rules around wearing jewellery are stated in the Student Planner. The main change is the permission to wear a small plastic stud in the nose, (however this may need to be removed for WHS reasons at certain times and subjects).  Again see the article by Mr Rob Imeson for more detailed information on jewellery.

    • In term 4 2019 we trialled a new procedure for changing into and out of the PE uniform. This will continue in 2020 and Mr Craig Nipperess, Leader of PDHPE, has outlined this in this newsletter.

    COMING UP

The first P&F / Parent Forum meeting of 2020 will be held on Tuesday 18th February at 5.30pm in the College Library. Please come along and take the opportunity to meet your new Principal and support the ongoing development of our College.

We pride ourselves at McAuley on building relationships and productive partnerships between home and the College. As in all things, from time to time issues will arise. Welcome to 2020 School Year at McAuley Catholic College

Welcome back to all our returning students and welcome to our Year 7 and new students and their families.

People to Contact - Our Pastoral Structure

Each year at this time we outline the communication process that needs to be followed when making contact with the College.

Wellbeing Information

Role of Homeroom Teacher, Year Coordinator, Pastoral Care Coordinator and House Leader

  • Homeroom teachers are a very important part of the pastoral structure. The Homeroom Teacher is the teacher primarily responsible for the welfare of each student in his/her Homeroom.

  • The Year Coordinator will be responsible for the welfare for the students in their year group. The six Year Coordinators form a pastoral team and will liaise with parents, Homeroom teachers, House Leaders, Leaders of Learning (KLA Co-ordinators), Classroom teachers and the College Leadership Team.

The Pastoral Care Coordinator oversees the Pastoral Care system of the College. The PCC works with staff, students, families and outside agencies. The PCC organises and runs special programs in the College.

  • The House Leader is the Coordinator of the entire House. They are responsible for building the House Spirit and House system. They work with their House Team, comprised of the seven Homeroom teachers and other teachers allocated to the House.

Brief overview of The House System:

The House System was introduced at McAuley Catholic College in 2004. The aim then and now is to promote a strong sense of community as well as opportunities for connectedness which will, in turn, promote resilience and a sense of achievement for all our students.

We continue to promote the House System at McAuley Catholic College as the “umbrella” under which all activities - religious, academic, pastoral, cultural, community, social, sporting - take place.

Counsellor & Student Support Worker

Counsellor - Siobhan McNamara

Student Support Worker - Mrs Megan Barton (Monday and Tuesday)

Student Planner

All students are issued with a Planner at the start of each year. The Planner is an important learning item that is to be taken to every class every day. Students are to record all homework, assessments, reminders etc in their diary. It is also used to collect and record Merit Stamps and exits from class (eg toilet, library, office, sick bay).

Students who become ill at school

Students do get sick while at school. We have a sick bay where students can be attended to and monitored. The Office staff regularly contact parents when a child is sick. Any student who is feeling unwell must report to sick bay.

As per our Mobile Phone Policy, students should not use their phone to contact parents during school hours.  The students must go to the office where the office staff can contact home. It is difficult when parents arrive at the College Office to collect their child and the Office staff are unaware the student is ill and then have to find the student somewhere in the school. This can be very disruptive for the Office staff. It is appreciated if our policy is followed.

College Expectations

Students and staff expect to work in a safe, secure and supportive environment. The expectations shown below ensure all learning spaces are settled and productive. These expectations work in-conjunction with our Mercy values of Respect, Compassion, Justice, Excellence and Hospitality. The expectations are displayed in all classrooms and are clearly stated in the Student Planner.

Youth Ministry Officers for 2020

This year we welcome back Chelsea Brown who will be joined by Josh Lill from Kempsey as our 2020 Youth Ministry Officers. Both Chelsea and Josh are currently at the YMO Equipping School learning valuable tools to equip them in leading students in youth ministry and discipleship activities. We look forward to their support in the range of mission activities we offer and being a valuable member of Religious Education classes.

BBQ Trailer

Our Senior students and staff provide a free BBQ every Friday from 12pm to people in need at the Hub in the New School of Arts in South Grafton. This BBQ is an example of service to our local community upholding the Catholic Social Justice Teaching of Preferential Options for the Poor. As part of our Religious Education program and in line with our Mercy values, we teach students that caring for the poor is everyone’s responsibility. Preferential care should be shown to poor and vulnerable people, whose needs and rights are given special attention in God’s eyes.

The students in Year 11 and 12 will be provided with a permission note to take home and have signed to give them permission to travel with a teacher to and from the Hub on a Friday. Students have been shared a roster and are asked to nominate when they would like to attend.

If you would like to donate or help out in any way to support this program, please contact Kathy Warby or Alex Montford at the College.

Invitation to Children's Liturgy

Children's Liturgy will take place each 3rd Sunday of the month at St Mary's Catholic Church. This will be followed by a morning tea in the Church grounds. All Parents and families are most welcome to join with the Parish community on Sunday 16th February at St Mary's Church

MOBILE PHONE UPDATE

Hello to all parents, carers, and students.

A warm welcome back for 2020.  I hope the holiday was restful and you all had a chance to recharge for the new year ahead.

A quick note from me to start the year.  The College Leadership Team met towards the end of the holidays to go over existing policies and procedures and make sure we updated policies that needed attention.  I’d like to draw your attention to our Mobile Phone Policy. Please take note of the following dot points:

  • Phones must be turned off upon arrival at school in the morning and may be switched on again after classes at 3.10pm.

  • Students are welcome to leave their phone in the office each day or place on the teacher desk / phone tub each lesson.

  • If it is necessary for parents or carers to make contact during school hours this must be done in the usual manner through the School Office.

  • Students must not lend their phones to other students during school hours.

  • Students can only use their phone with the permission of a teacher, for example when used for educational purposes during a lesson, using eftpos at the canteen and office.

  • After 3.10pm, while being supervised on school grounds, students may use their phone to listen to music,  check messages and make calls. However, they cannot take photos or videos.

    Jewellery

      • Jewellery should be modest and kept to a minimum.

      • Permitted items: a wristwatch, a single neck chain, one simple ring and one bangle. Students may wear a maximum of two sleepers or studs in each ear. These are to be small, plain earrings.

      • Not permitted: Neckbands, as well as wrist and ankle-chains; leather jewellery, visible facial piercings (such as nose, eyebrow, tongue, lip). Only clear nose spacers are permitted

      • Students may be asked to stay home until uniform issues are rectified. Excess jewellery will be confiscated by staff and returned at the discretion of the Assistant Principal or Pastoral Care Coordinator. All care will be taken, but no responsibility is accepted.

For any policy to work, we need support.  Support from students to follow the policy, support from staff to enforce the policy, and, most importantly support from parents to follow and enforce the policy if an issue should arise.

Our Mobile Phone Policy has been attached to this newsletter down below. If you have any questions or concerns regarding our Mobile Phone policy, please feel free to call the College during school hours and speak to me.

I acknowledge mobile devices can be great for communication and at times, useful in education.  However, I am well aware that the addictive nature of their design is not helpful for developing teenage brains without clear, consistent boundaries.

I look forward to your support in this matter.

Year 12

Year 12 have just returned for their last ‘first day of the school year’ and while this is exciting, there is a lot of hard work to be completed this year. A letter to Year 12 students and parents was sent home last week with numerous reminders. If Year 12 parents/guardians have not received this, there are more available in the front office of the College.

I would like to highlight the point around driving to and from school.  If students wish to drive or be a passenger in a student’s car they need parental permission. Students and parents should familiarise themselves with, and adhere to the college policy. If students cannot adhere to the policy, the privilege to drive to school will be revoked for a period of time. Application forms are in the front office of the College. No student should be driving or be a passenger before these forms are completed.

Nikita Robinson

Year 12 Coordinator

Year 7

The 120 students in Year 7 at McAuley have made a wonderful transition to high school. They have learned how to read their timetables, get organised for all their different subjects and have now met their homeroom teacher and classroom teachers. It has been lovely watching the students make new friends and making an effort in their learning.

Please ensure that locker notes are signed and returned to the front office so that we can allocate lockers to Year 7 students as soon as possible.

I would like to thank the Year 12 student leaders who helped so willingly and capably on Year 7s first day, and also Mr Alex Montford for all his assistance. The welcome BBQ breakfast was a big hit and I would also like to thank the many staff who pitched in to help make it happen.

Year 7 Immunisation

Year 7 Immunisation will be on Monday, 24th February.  Immunisation consent forms will be sent home with students next week. These forms must be returned to the College Office ASAP.

If you have any further questions please call the College Office on 66431434

From the Leader of Pedagogy

Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) Progressive Achievement Test (PAT)

In 2020, Stage 4 (Year 7 and Year 8) students will complete the ACER PAT Reading and Mathematics formative assessments. These tasks are a valuable tool that will provide teachers with accurate and reliable data on student growth and inform pedagogy in the areas of differentiation and support. This ACER approach supports the notion of building a growth mindset where we can “teach to the needs of the individual learner to advance the progress of every student, regardless of their starting point.” Students will complete the task in both Maths and English, however, the data will be used to inform teachers in all Key Learning Areas to allow for planning and differentiation of the curriculum in both extension and support.

Inquiry Learning

Inquiry Learning will continue to be a focus in pedagogy at McAuley Catholic College for 2020. Through this method, students remain at the centre of learning and develop the essential skills needed for living and working in the 21st century. Teaching practices that centre around inquiry learning include Problem-based learning (PrBL), Project-based learning and Design-based learning (DBL). Students are presented with authentic problems and work both individually and collaboratively to achieve the required knowledge, critical thinking and problem solving skills to complete the task. Teachers take on the role of learner activators and develop and refine the self-directed learning skills in students along with communication, collaboration, innovation, resilience and time management.

Curriculum News

Assessment

Students in Years 7 to 11 will receive their Assessment Policy Handbook next week and will be presented with an outline of key information and procedures. The booklet contains details about assessment and outlines the assessment task schedule for each subject for 2020. An assessment summary for each term will also be created and placed on the College website. Any questions about assessment in a specific subject can be directed to the class teacher in the first instance.

HSC Minimum Standard

The HSC minimum standard is a way of supporting and ensuring students have a functional level of literacy and numeracy. To achieve an HSC in 2020 and beyond, students must sit the HSC minimum standard online tests in reading, writing and numeracy. Many students in Years 11 and 12 have already met the minimum standard in one or more of the tests. Students in Year 10 and those in Years 11 and 12 who have not yet met the standard will be given multiple opportunities this year to achieve the standard. Details of these opportunities will be provided to students. For further information about the HSC minimum standard, parents/carers are asked to visit the NESA website.

OPAL

The OPAL (Ongoing Participation and Application Log) program at McAuley Catholic College provides information to parents/carers about the nature and quality of student participation and application across all subjects. It is an opportunity to recognise, affirm and promote student effort & engagement . The OPAL program also enables the College to identify students of concern and intervene in an appropriate and timely manner in order to assist and encourage improved engagement with their learning.

OPAL’s for Term 1 will be released to the Parent Portal in Week 5 and Week 8. Term 1 parent/teacher interviews will be held on Tuesday 31st March and provide you with an opportunity to discuss your child’s progress. However, parents/carers are encouraged to communicate with your child’s teacher at any time by email or by contacting the College office.

Learning Technologies

Tuesday, 11th February is Safer Internet Day, “a worldwide event that raises awareness about online safety and encourages everyone to help create a better internet.” Families can access resources via the website below, including a free webinar on starting a conversation on safe internet use and eSafety online quizzes.

https://www.esafety.gov.au/safer-internet-day/families

Let’s continue the conversation together on managing technology and keeping our children safe online. #SID2020

Mathematics

Mathematics - Homework Policy

The Maths department is very pleased to inform you that students in Year’s 7 – 10 have access to “Maths Online” for 2020. Our homework policy revolves around the use of “Maths Online” and all students are expected to complete the set task by the due date.

All topics covered in class will have an associated task. Therefore a new task will appear when a new topic is started (roughly every 3 weeks). Each task will contain 5 to 10 individual lessons that need completing. All work must be completed in the Maths Online exercise book provided to the students.

  • It is the student’s choice as to when they complete these lessons over the duration of the topic. The expectation is that all lessons within the task are completed online and in their Maths Online exercise book by the due date.
  • The due date is displayed on the top right hand corner of the task.
  • If internet access at home is a problem the students are asked to print off the worksheets at school using their laptops. They are then required to enter the results electronically whilst at school.
  • Failure to complete a task may result in the student completing the task in their lunchtime in the Learning Intervention room.

We strongly encourage parents to monitor their child’s progress. Every student has a unique login and parents can obtain access to detailed reports and analysis of their child’s progress via the website
www.mathsonline.com.au.

This policy encourages students to take ownership of their own learning whilst providing flexibility to complete homework around extra-curricular activities.

With your support we can make full use of this excellent resource. If there are any queries please do not hesitate to contact me at school.

The Conference and those we assist are most thankful.

If anyone in the Parish School Community would like to join our Conference please contact the School Office for details. You don’t have to be Catholic to join.

Sibling/Family/Friend Group Photo forms must be collected from the College Office before Photo day - Students will have the option to collect these next week. These orders cannot be made on the individual student envelopes.

If you have any questions or concerns please contact the College Office on 66431434
