Salmon Gums Primary

Newsletter Term 1 Week 2

Principal’s Report

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

The year has gotten off to a great start with all the students settled in to their classes and new routines being established. Already the year is filling up with lots of great opportunities for our students. There will be a Scitech excursion to Scaddan, Athletics carnival preparation will shortly be underway, in Term 2 the students will partake in a Circus Challenge workshop, we will be visited by the Watoto children’s choir and much, much more. Watch this space!

Digital Correspondence

This year as a school we are aiming to be more technologically savvy. All correspondence will be sent out digitally via email, the Skoolbag app and our school website. The parent handbook has been updated and is located on the website. Within this section you will find all the relevant information about the school, the contributions and charges outline, and the new canteen menu. The school newsletter will also be developed digitally this year using the newsletter template through the website and Skoolbag software. The newsletter will continue to be uploaded each fortnight. A brief demonstration on how to navigate our website will be provided at the first P&C meeting for the year. This will be held on Wednesday 20th February. If you are still wanting to receive a paper version of our outgoing documents, please let myself or Janine know as soon as you can.

Seesaw

This year we are continuing to use Seesaw to share and communicate with families! Your child will post to Seesaw to share their learning. We are also using Seesaw to promote the 5 Tribe’s agreements, particularly Appreciations. A new class has been created this year to allow for all of the students to be in the one class. This will then provide opportunities for students to share work with their peers from all classes and to share appreciations with each other. The classes from last year will remain open but it is unlikely students will post their work in this account. As a new class has been set up all parents will be required to set up each child within their current account. This will mean that you will have duplicate students in your account; however, each one will refer to the different year level – i.e. one for 2018 and one for 2019. If you need support with this, please come and see me at the school. An email was sent out to all families last week with the links and information required to set up the new class in your account. If you did not receive this email or need it to be sent out again, please let me know and I will forward it on to you.

Enrolment Permission Slip and Acceptable Usage Agreements

A huge thank you to all the families who have returned the permission slips and Acceptable Usage Agreement that was sent home last week. If you are still completing the form can I please ask that they be returned by this Friday (15th February).

Parent Communication, Concerns or Questions

All staff are available and on hand to answer any of your questions and provide information should you have any concerns. If you would like to check in on your child’s progress or have a general conversation with your child’s classroom teacher, please arrange a convenient time with them outside of their teaching time. We believe in an open door policy here at Salmon Gums and welcome you all to come in and see us for any reason.

Strategic Planning workshops

This year we will be redeveloping our new strategic plan, and parent and community involvement in this process is vital to ensure we all share common goals for the future of the school. Various workshops will need to take place throughout the year to identify the school vision, core values and school priority areas. More information will come regarding the time, place and agenda focus for each of the workshops. A survey monkey will be sent out to all families this week asking for feedback on appropriate times and days. It is difficult to organise a time appropriate for all; however, the more feedback we receive will make this all the more possible. I look forward to embarking on this journey with you all.

Remember to keep yourself updated with the happenings of the school by checking your email, Skoolbag app and the school website.

Scitech Excursion to Scaddan

Next Wednesday our students will be travelling to Scaddan to partake in a Scitech excursion and other learning experiences with the Scaddan students. Permission slips and information letters are being sent home this week and will need to be returned to school by Monday 18th February. The student will leave Salmon Gums at 10am and arrive at Scaddan PS in time to join them for recess. The excursion will be finished by 2:15pm when the students will then return to school in time for the afternoon buses. Scitech always put on fantastic workshops for the students, so I am sure it will be an enjoyable experience for all.

Student Leader Report

Hello everyone,

Welcome back to our school, I hope you had fun on your holidays.

Since last year lots has changed one of them is the student leaders. The new student leaders are Freya, Chloe, Ella and Melinda.

We have been asked to fundraise for some children that are staying in the Esperance Hospital, to go out and have some fun. These children are spending all their time in the Hospital, with nothing to do, so we are fundraising for them to have a fun day.  Over four weeks during Term 1 we have come up with four fun days and our goal is to raise $300 or more.

Our first week back at school has been a lot of fun, let’s make the next 39 weeks even better!

Book Fair Coming Soon!

Book Fair has been confirmed for mid March and will run over 2 days. Students will be able to view books prior to the event, and parents and community are welcome to attend at their leisure.  The theme in Term 1 is "Catch the Reading Wave".
