Newsletter 28 April 2023

Principal's Report

Dear Parents/Carers,

Welcome to our first newsletter for Term 2. We have had a very smooth and settled start to the school term. As I am conducting my daily class visits, I am seeing classes engaged in their learning and focused on improving their learning outcomes. This term I am implementing the ‘Principal’s Afternoon Tea’, to celebrate student academic success. Every Friday afternoon one student from each class who has shown exceptional academic progress or produced exemplary work, will be invited to an afternoon tea with me where they can show me their amazing work, receive a special recognition of excellence card and a Zooper Dooper.

This term, I am also implementing a special social skills program for targeted groups of students. Students will participate in two, half hour sessions weekly, to build skills around resilience, dealing with conflict and interpersonal skills. Students will learn how to transfer skills learnt in these sessions to other aspects of life and various situations.

EASTER EGG HUNT

Our P&C Easter Egg Hunt was a huge success on Easter Saturday 8 April.

I would like to thank Carolyn Brewer and the entire P&C for all of their hard work in organising and running this event. Not only was this event a wonderful fundraiser but it also brought our wider school community together building a collective responsibility for our students’ education.

ANZAC Day Ceremonies

Travel to and from School

Student travel to and from school, when they are not with their parents/carers is expected to comply with the school’s Student Code of Conduct. This year we continue to have staggered starts and finishes: P-3 8:50am-2:50pm; Years 4-6 8:55am-2:55pm. Helping Hands staff collect P-3 students from the gate for the afternoon OSHC session.

CAR AND BUS

The main public car park is situated off Old Gympie Road. and is part of the government road system. It has car and bus parking and has also been designed to provide a special space to enable cars to pull up to set down and pick up students.

Looking at the school, the area to the left of the main gate is for drop off of students only.

Signage indicates a “STOP DROP GO ZONE“, “2 MIN PARKING 8am-3:30pm“ and “NO PARKING”.

  • Drivers must not double park in the “Drop and Go Zone” nor leave their vehicle unattended during school drop off and pick up times, as posted on the Stop Drop Go signage.
  • Please place your vehicle in a SINGLE queue and wait patiently for the queue of cars to move through the “DROP OFF ZONE“ then, after setting down/picking up your passengers, drive from the space with EXTREME caution.
  • No passengers should be getting in/out of a vehicle when it is in the single queue. This is a very dangerous practice because of risk of younger students copying the behaviour of older students or adults. The car parks opposite the Stop Drop Go gate are 15 minutes during drop off and pick up time so they are available for drivers to pull into if their student/s are not yet at the Stop Drop Go gate.
  • The Bus Zone is located at the end of the Car Park and is a BUS ONLY Zone.
  • Signage is in place to notify drivers that this is a BUS ENTRY ONLY. Do not drive into or park in the Bus Zone and keep exits clear.
  • Always drive very slowly through the car park.

If students have a concern about a problem on the bus, it should always be reported to the driver in the first instance. If that has not been possible or it is a repeat problem, they can report it to the office when they arrive at school or parent/caregivers should phone the school in the afternoon. If community members have any concern about driver behaviour in the Old Gympie Road car park they are advised to contact Police Link. The school has been advised that police prefer first hand and immediate reporting of incidents.

BIKE

Each rider must register at the office to become a member of our Kandoo Bike Shelter register. They will make a commitment to ride to and from school safely and to keep their bikes or scooters secured. Once registered, each rider will be given a special access code to enable them to secure their bike in the shelter. Students must have a lock to secure their bike/scooter in the racks.

Any children who wish to use the shelter must register prior to bringing their bike/scooter or other form of personal transport to school. This can be done at the office in the days prior to riding to school. Students who registered last year are not required to re-register this year.

Parents and carers are asked to ensure that their children have the capability and knowledge to ride to school safely and that the children can control their push-bike or other equipment used to ride to school. For example, for safety, they must be able to stop safely. They must be able to stop as they approach the school’s Peachester Road entrance and driveway and walk their bike into the shed.

ENCOURAGING READING AT HOME

Our subscription to the Department of Education’s ebook digital library is due for renewal.

We have sent out an expression of interest to all families. If you would like your child to have access to the ebook digital library, return this EOI to the office by Friday 28 April.

The subscription will be paid for by Beerwah State School and provide children access to a wide range of ebooks, audio books and read along books. The digital library (SORA) is accessible via an App or browser.

We will then register all children who have EOIs returned by 28 April and provide information about how to access the digital library.

STUDENT COUNCIL:

Thank-you to all who participated in our tie die day on Thursday 30th March. Student council raised $162.50 towards our school improvement projects.

TALKING ABOUT LEARNING

It can be difficult to discuss learning with children at times. Often questions like ‘how was your day’ will get one word answers like ‘good’.

At Beerwah State School we use the work of Lyn Sharratt to inform our approach to making learning visible. One element of this work is the ‘five questions’. These questions give us a frame to have deeper conversations with children about their learning. At school we choose to focus our use of the five questions on our English units of work.

There are versions of the ‘five questions’ for parents which can be a great tool:

1. What did you learn today?

2. How did you do?

3. What did you do if you didn’t understand?

4. How can you improve on your learning?

5. What are you most proud of?

REMINDER NOTICES

Our school will be using a new Departmental process for sending reminder notices to parents/carers with overdue invoices. Reminder notices will generate periodically once your invoice becomes overdue.

How you will receive the reminder notice:
  • If you have provided us with an email address and you have overdue invoices, you will start to receive reminder notices directly to your email address
  • If you have not provided us with an email address, reminder notices for any overdue invoices will be posted to you.

ACCOUNT QUERIES

If you are unable to pay your invoices before the due date or have a query about an invoice you have received, it is important that you contact us before the invoice is due for payment.

PAYMENT OPTIONS

Beerwah State School is excited to offer all parents the ability to order and pay for your child’s school items using your smartphone, tablet or computer. The new Qkr! (pronounced ‘quicker’) by MasterCard application is a secure and easy way to make school payments at your convenience. We encourage all parents to use Qkr! as it reduces the need to send cash to school or attend in person, and receipts are automatically generated that can be easily retrieved on the app or sent to your email. It is easier for families and it also significantly streamlines operations with the school.  QKR! How to Guide
QKR! is our preferred method for payment via the secure QKR! App.
  • You Can also pay via the secure BPoint  payment portal in QParents.
  • You can also pay via the BPoint link on the invoice you receive via email
  • Cashless payments can be made at the Payment Window by EFTPOS on Monday, Wednesday & Friday morning between 8:30am-10:30am
  • Students may hand permission & payment to the office in a sealed envelope or snaplock bag.

HOME-SCHOOL COMMUNICATION

Please refer to the Communication Placemat that is available on our website to determine the appropriate method and avenue of communication for any information you require. If you are unsure, please email the school via admin@beerwahss.eq.edu.au and your query will be passed on to the appropriate staff member.

We welcome parents and other members of our diverse community into our school. Working together with the school community, school staff support the learning and wellbeing of every student, and are entitled to a safe work environment. Parents and other visitors to our school support safety by ensuring their communications and conduct at the school and school activities is respectful. Please read our Parent and Community Code of Conduct for more information.

STUDENT MESSAGES AND EARLY COLLECTION

We realise sometimes Parents need to get a message to student/s to change how they are going home, with whom, or need to collect student/s early. We ask Parents, where possible, to please contact the school at their earliest convenience prior to 1:00pm; to advise so messages can go out in rolls and minimise interruptions to class learning time.

Please call prior to arriving to collect student/s so we can have them in the office ready for your arrival. Our break times are 11:00am-11:30am & 1:00pm-1:40pm. We thank you for your support.

CHANGE OF DETAILS

Up to date information helps us look after each of our students. Contact details can be updated through the BSS Skoolbag, QParents app or SZ app. For a hard copy to complete and return, please download from the sidepanel of our school newsletter or website.

Student Services

At Beerwah, the Student Services team meets every second week to discuss how best to support our students’ learning and support needs.  Sometimes students’ needs are identified on enrolment or through our moderation process and other times individual student needs are identified by teachers.

Classroom teachers may discuss student needs with parents and carers and if necessary a referral will be made to the Student Services team.  If this is necessary, a green permission form will be sent home, explaining the process and we encourage you to complete the questionnaire on the rear of the form to help us to understand the needs of your student more clearly.

Our team are currently running an intervention program focussing on supporting students requiring additional support in the areas of phonemic awareness and phonics.

VOLUNTEERING

It was wonderful to see the team of volunteers who supported and helped run the Easter Egg Hunt during the school holidays. As the saying goes, many hands make light work. If you want to find out more about how you can volunteer, please email pa&c@beerwahss.eq.edu.au or connect through our Facebook page. Did you know: Volunteering Makes a Difference in your Child’s Education Children whose parents are involved in their schools do better. Research has shown that children of school volunteers make better grades and perform better on tests. They’re also better behaved, have better attendance, and are more likely to graduate and continue their education. The more parents participate at school, the more successful their children will be.

Don’t forget: the P&C Association is an approved volunteer organization with Centrelink (Services Australia) so if you need to complete volunteering hours, the school is a great option. This can be extended to grandparents and other friends; they will need to apply for a Blue Card to volunteer in the school which is an easy process we can assist with. Contact us by email and we can arrange to work out how we can help each other.

FACEBOOK PAGE

Facebook is our main form of contact so please follow us and keep an eye out for updates. If you see one of our updates – for example our next pancake morning notice, please share with your friends. The more people who attend, the more funds we raise, and the more we can buy for your children to use at school. Everyone’s a winner!!! We’ll also update you on the Tuckshop or Uniform shop, it’s the easiest form of contact so please keep following. Just find our page and like us to start following. BSS P&C Facebook page

EVENTS & FUNDRAISING

The Easter Egg Hunt was a FANTASTIC success. We welcomed and entertained approximately 800 members of the Sunshine Coast community. Both Jason Hunt MP and Andrew Powel MP attended and were in ore of the community spirit and vibe. It is so wonderful to have our local community supporting our local state school. The P & C and the team volunteers were so proud to have produced such a fun and engaging family event for our community. A HUGE thank you to all the volunteers in the lead up and on the day. The success of the day has seen the P & C raise even more funds than the 2022 event. Total figure to be announced at the next P & C meeting, so come along and share our excitement. Keep an eye on our Facebook for this term’s events. A weekly update is posted.

WORKING BEE

Term 2’s working bee has been postponed due to the public holiday. The new date has been set for Saturday 20 May from 9:00am - 12 midday. All students who volunteer will receive their volunteer badge.

BOOK CLUB

The best way to order for the book club is online at www.scholastic.com.au/LOOP all books are delivered to the school and distributed to each child. If you would prefer to order as gifts, ensure you select that option and your items will be available for collection from the office. The due date for orders is always stamped on the front of the brochure so don’t miss out! An extra bonus is that the school receives 15% of all order values to purchase books for our library. Books are such a wonderful addition to any child’s life and there are some amazing prices in the book club.

TUCKSHOP

Tuckshop is open Fridays, first break only. All orders will be via Qkr! which will be made available one week before. Before ordering, please double check your child’s profile & class as we had some orders going to the wrong class. As per the Schoolbag notice, tuckshop menu has been altered in line with the Queensland Association of School Tuckshops recommendations, ensuring we are only offering healthy choices. We are able to offer up to two red food days per term. We will give plenty of notice of these days. We will be trialing cash orders between week 3 and week 10 this term. All orders being made by cash need to be submitted by Thursday. Correct money only as no change will be able to be given. Please ensure your child's money is secure in an envelope with their order, name and class clearly labeled on the envelope. No late cash orders will be accepted. Qkr! is the preferred method for tuckshop ordering. These orders will need to be completed via Qkr! prior to 7:30 am on the day of opening. Please DO NOT send your child with cash. We are unable to serve and collect cash over the counter on the day of ordering. . If you require support to set up a Qkr! Account, please contact the P & C via email or Facebook and we will happily support you to complete this. We would love to open before school to offer a breakfast service, but this is dependent on volunteers, so if you are available to assist on a regular basis, please get in touch. Also, if you or your child has ideas for the menu, please get in touch as we’d love to hear all suggestions. p&c@beerwahss.eq.edu.au

Kandoo Joeys' Playgroup

Welcome back to another Term filled with learning through play at Kandoo Joeys Playgroup. April is Nature Play month and with this amazing weather we are excited to hold our Teddy Bear’s Picnic at our amazing Outdoor Classroom on Wednesday 26 April the first week back to playgroup. When children play in nature they explore their environment, build their social skills through interactions with others, learning how to share, cooperate and negotiate, and exercise. Outdoor play builds on children’s cognitive development and problem-solving skills by encouraging their imagination and creativity. When children run, climb, jump and play outdoors they build on their motor skills and coordination.

Kandoo Joeys is open to all families with before-school-aged children and runs every Wednesday from 9.00am-11.00am in J Block, next to the Admin Block.

Come and join in the fun and social connections as your children learn through play at Kandoo Joeys Playgroup.
