TAKE OVER

Sydney Opera House x Liverpool Boys HS

We had over 100 students involved in a 3 week project which was designed to capture their creativity. The project was run by Frank Newman, Creative Learning Specialist, and his team from the Sydney Opera House. Frank was also assisted by our head teachers who gave up their regular timetable and duties to solely focus on Take Over.  The students were given opportunities to express their interest in the project with the understanding that this will “take over” their timetable and be all they focus on for the next 3 weeks. Going into Take Over, much was a surprise to students. On the first day they crawled through a makeshift tunnel into the transformed Block A and that's where it all begun.

We suspended the traditional timetable to allow the boys to just concentrate on learning one thing.  They were responsible for their own learning, making them deeply accountable. They were responsible for producing a final product in just three weeks, that was displayed in front of peers, families and teachers.

Across the first week the boys were challenged to think of a driving question that they wanted to explore and to create a final product to be displayed at the festival on the last day. Throughout the next couple of weeks boys were mentored by our staff and Sydney Opera House specialists to create their products. We also welcomed Tahir Bilgic  who joined us to provide workshops and 1:1 mentoring and guidance to students.

The projects were a range or art, film, music and technology. We had students write scripts, act, record, and edit films, some students also recorded their own music, created video clips and performed their own tracks... So much learning and experience within a short period of time.

On the day of our Big Day In Festival students showcased their products and it wasn't via a simple exhibition, it was BIG! All those who attended went through multiple sensory experiences. We had re designed Block A once again to include lights, smoke machines, stages, food stalls, colour and sound. Each visitor wore a set of headphones as they wandered the halls, listening to live interviews from those involved in Take Over, they also received instructions and further information on projects and the process of Take Over.

The festival was an incredible success, as was the entire Take Over project. So much risk and time went into this. Our teachers embraced this and pushed their own boundaries all to assist the boys with re-imagining  what school could be.

At the end of this journey we thank all the students who took everything on board and made every effort to succeed, our staff who at many stages were at their wits end and our Sydney Opera House team who's motivation and energy never seemed to crumple! This was a mammoth project and one we are so proud to be a part of.

We have uploaded many of the photos to our website and have begun uploading student videos to our youtube channel.

Find My Spark Festival

Find My Spark was a fantastic day for Big Picture students to learn and experience the entrepreneurial skills and mindset. Students from 13 different schools joined us for the unique opportunity of connecting with and learning directly from young entrepreneurs who are already running Australian businesses.

Find My Spark was a day dedicated to developing problem-solving skills, learning how to turn an idea into a startup, exploring entrepreneurial pathways in tertiary education, and inspiring young minds to think big and follow their dreams.

The day was divided in three interactive workshops which allowed students to practice entrepreneurial skills and to explore local businesses, through activities cohosted by Design Thinking facilitators and young entrepreneurs. Students also had the chance to engage with local startups who showcased their technology.

Communication Partners (Warwick Farm Public School) – My perspective, Paramyuvraj Singh

Communication partners has been a great and rewarding experience for not just me, and I think I’m speaking for everyone there, but all of the students volunteering to go there every other Thursday for 2 periods. But before I talk about my experiences, I want to give a brief explanation as to what communication partners is and how it works. This program takes place in Warwick Farm Public School, more specifically the library. The reason we go there once a fortnight is to help some of the younger students, usually in kindergarten or year, who have trouble pronouncing a certain sound or a blend such as ‘r’ and might end up saying or using ‘w’ instead. The first time we arrived there we went through a brief lesson on how to teach and help the kids, one such way was physically showing them how to pronounce the sound by holding a mirror in front of them while they try to mimic us. With the training behind us we eagerly await our next visit.

A quick brisk walk to Warwick Farm Public school’s library and you’ve done the hardest part of all of this. Once we arrive, we each get a small table and even smaller chairs where after a few minutes the kids arrive. They each have their own folder which they bring to the table and inside you find you find a booklet outlining what sound they need to practice as well as activates involving those sounds. We work through the booklet as quickly as we can because the kids know that the quicker, they complete a certain module of the booklet the quicker they get to have some fun and play some games. By having this as the ultimatum, the kids may sometime want to skip the booklet and move straight to the games but by encouraging them to do the booklet first they put all their effort and focus in finishing the booklet. Then once that’s finished, they quickly go to chose a game from the libraries array of toys and board games. We do this with two other kids each so that we can help as many kids in a day as we can.

Over this past year that I have been doing communication partners I’ve noticed the exponential growth in which each kid gets better and that this program is quite effective in helping most if not all of the young students. When the kids are capable enough to say the sounds on their own it gives an immense sense of satisfaction for not only the student but also all of us there as the mentors and teachers. No matter how small the sound may be the sense of satisfaction and confidence comes a long way. Highly recommend to all students interested in helping kids out and everyone in general because it’s a great experience to have and it looks really good in a resume.
