From the Principal

Congratulations

A huge congratulations to all students who have represented our school in sporting endeavours recently. Swimming, Football, Softball....Well done to all students for being brave and having a go. You should all be proud of yourselves.

Welcome to Autumn!

The cooler weather often occurring with the commencement of Autumn has been a bit hit and miss. It is important to realise that more and more students will be wearing clothing to provide them with increased warmth over the next little bit of time….please remember to ensure that all clothing is named clearly. This small task will ensure that all items can be returned to their owners.

The Big Six of Literacy - A Guide for Families

Issue 2 - Phonological Awareness

How does phonological awareness contribute to reading success?

Phonological awareness is the ability to hear the sounds within language. Children with good phonological awareness can hear:

  • words and word spaces in language
  • syllables (a unit of pronunciation with one vowel sound; for example, cat has one syllable, water has two syllables)
  • rhyme (two or more words with the same ending sound; for example, ring, sing, thing)
  • alliteration (two or more words with the same beginning sound; for example Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers)
  • phonemes (the individual sounds within a word; for example, dog has three phonemes, d-o-g).

Being able to hear or ‘isolate’ these sounds gives children a foundation for learning to manipulate the sounds of sentences and words as they learn to read and spell.

How can families encourage phonological awareness at home?
  • Read aloud books or poems with rhyming words at the end of lines or sentences. Allow children to join in and predict the next rhyming word.
  • Listen for and clap with the syllables of familiar and new words, for example, jump-ing, wa-ter, ha-ppi-ness, fab-u-lous.
  • Sing songs, say nursery rhymes, chants, riddles, silly poems, tongue twisters and jokes.

Prep/Year 1 News

Wow ! What a busy first term we are having! Part of coming to school is learning to work, share and co-operate with others. In the Prep and Year One room these skills are practised often during the day as part of group work and when we are playing.

When we work together, playtime can be lots of fun and we can make some amazing things. Have a look at the great constructions the class has made when they have worked together to build things.

Year 1/2 News

Year 2/3 News

It has been a very busy two weeks in the 2/3 class. Some highlights were participating in a school clean-up for Clean Up Australia day and visiting the Peachester History Centre (Did you know that the name Peachester was derived from Peach Trees?).

We have been working hard on reading in our class and are seeing some fantastic growth. Well done to students returning their signed reading folders every day, we are working towards a special class reward if we can get 100%.

Year 3/4 News

This week in science, Year 3/4 have been studying Indigenous Seasonal Calendars. These calendars were produced by traditional owners of different parts of the country and published by the CSIRO. The calendars demonstrate the wealth of knowledge that Indigenous Peoples in Australia hold about the environment.

The calendars are circular and show the interconnectedness of animal and plant life in our country.

Students were discussing the scientific observations and ways of working that were utilised in order to create these calendars.

If you would like to check out these beautiful calendars, they can be found at:

Year 5/6 News

This fortnight has been super busy. We had our 2nd Softball Gala Day and our mega team played off for first, winning the Boys B Division trophy.  We have had a number of students trial for District Sports in Rugby League, Softball and Soccer. All this on top of our already busy school day schedules.

Prep / 1 Buddies

We have had the opportunity to work with our Prep/1 buddies and help them with their library borrowing and also spending some time reading with them. It's been a great way for our school leaders to show some initiative and they have been very patient and supportive in this space.

Easter Egg Guessing Competition

From Monday, students will have the opportunity to guess the amount of eggs in the special Easter jars. Students will visit the classroom with the jars on Monday morning. Guesses will be 50c each and you can meet with the Year 6 students at first break in the undercover area to have your guess. All fundraising goes towards the Year 6 Graduation.

Cross Country Ice blocks

Ice blocks will be for sale for $1 from the tuckshop at second break on Wednesday 22nd March. It will be a lovely cool refreshing treat after earning as many points as you can for your sporting team!

** Apologies as our parent/student softball challenge is going to have to be postponed until next term (until Ms H is feeling a little better).
