Alumni Yael Stone visits Balmain

Yael Stone, Australian actor and star of Netflix's Orange is the New Black, came back to her old primary school on Tuesday. She was being interviewed for an episode in the latest series of the ABC's Julia Zemiro's Home Delivery.

The highly entertaining Julia Zemiro walks notable people through their former lives, and helps uncover the people, places and events that shaped them into the people they are today.

Yael specifically requested to come back to Balmain Public School, as she has really fond memories of growing up. Yael even asked if she could possible have a school hat (and she's wearing it in the photo). We were very happy to oblige!

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Call out for Class Reps!

Would you like to take on important role in your child’s class this year as a Class Representative?

Class Reps play an essential liaison role between teachers, parents and carers and the P&C. It's a fun and interactive role and a great way to get to know your child's class and teachers and be involved in the Balmain Public School community.

Each class will have two Class Reps- a primary and backup. In the event of multiple volunteers, the teachers and staff will finalise the allocation.

Primary Class Rep responsibilities:

  • Communicate classroom and P&C news to class families
  • Assist teachers with parent involvement in classroom activities (e.g. helping with reading, special projects, assisting with excursions or sports)
  • Coordinate class participation in P&C fundraising events

Please see handbook below for further information.

If you are interested in raising your hand to be a class rep, please send an email to balmainps@gmail.com  Att: CLASS REP with your name, child's name and classroom name by Thursday 20 Feb.

Class Reps will be announced in next week's Pigeon Post.

Head Lice Advice

Please be advised that there have been a couple of cases of head lice found in the school. It is recommended that you check your child’s hair and, if necessary, treat them.

It is advisable that you regularly check your child’s hair as a routine to help control the problem, as children frequently are in situations where they are easily transferred from one child to another.

For information on treatment:

All donations should be clean, and still wearable / saleable. All funds raised from second chance sales go back to buying resources for our school!

Please bring donations to the uniform stall on Friday mornings, or leave in the labelled box near the office.

Welcome to the Balmain Family!

As 1/2 Daffodil students and families are already aware, Ms Ariana Davis is currently on leave and will not returning to Balmain Public School in 2020. We wish her all the very best whilst on leave!

We warmly welcome Ms Jana Moisa, who has joined the Balmain family, and will be the teacher of 1/2 Daffodils for the rest of the year. She has been on the class, with Ms Curry, since Thursday and officially commences on Monday!

Ms Jana Moisa

Hello Balmain parents/carers, staff and students. Thank you very much for welcoming me into the school and community.

Last year I taught Year One at Taverners Hill Infants School and prior to that I taught Year One at Ashfield Public School for two years.

My family background is Estonian, but I was born in Australia. My interests and likes include dancing, art, graphic design, AFL, tennis, nutrition, coffee, cooking, flamingos and sloths.

I am passionate about encouraging my students and supporting them in reaching their full inner potential and highlighting their unique skills and strengths. I look forward to getting to know you all better in the Balmain School Community throughout the course of this year.

Thanks Ms Curry!

Thanks so much, Ms Curry, for teaching 1/2 Daffodil, until we were able to organise a replacement teacher for the class. Your ongoing support is much appreciated.

Ms Curry will still be working at Balmain Public School, on a part-time basis, as she continues her studies.

Weekly House Points Update

How does the House Points system work?

The new house points system will tie in with the already existing Positive Pete’s. When a student is awarded a Positive Pete, they also earn a tally mark for their house colour.

Every Thursday afternoon, these tally marks will be totalled by the house captains.

From this final total, houses will be ranked in order, by how many tally marks they have received. The house that has the most tally marks for that week will be the winner of the week. All other houses will be awarded points based on their weekly position.

1st - 4 points

2nd - 3 points

3rd - 2 points

4th - 1 point

These points will be added to the overall house scores.

Rewards

The winning house of the week (announced each Thursday afternoon, both at school and via skoolbag) will:

-          Allowed to wear their house colour t-shirt that Friday.

-          Have their house flag displayed at assemblies and in front of the office.

The overall winning house each term will receive a reward TBC

The winning house at the end of the year will receive an additional reward.

WHAT'S BEEN HAPPENING AT BALMAIN PS...

P&C Welcome Breakfast BBQ

What a fabulous turnout on a glorious Friday morning, for the annual P&C Welcome Breakfast BBQ! There were still some people getting something to eat at 9am, when the bell rang!

A HUGE SHOUT OUT and THANKS go to Cliff (our resident BBQ expert) and Anne, who organised this fabulous event, along with all the amazing people who assisted with preparations, cooking, serving and packing up! An extra special shout out to the students, who selflessly gave up their play time to help out, too!

What a team effort! What a community!

Special thanks also goes to Jackson, who you and I know from Eaton St Centre, but for those of you who visit the Orange Grove Public School markets, know he's the BBQer extraordinaire!

What a way to start the day! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

From our P&C

Thanks to everyone for supporting the Welcome Breakfast & we all hope that you had a great time. Thanks to Anne, Alma, Cliff, Belinda, Sally, Jackson, Lyn, Cindy & all the other volunteers for making the event a success.

Stepping out with Footsteps!

Spotlight on...

3/4 Bamboo for pandas!

WOWEE...what a whirlwind of a start to the year! A huge welcome to all students, parents and carers of 3/4 Bamboo. We have been busy learning about so many things.

Maths – Never underestimate the importance of the basics! We revised and learnt about place value. Some of us even knew place value up to nine digits!

English – Are rabbits a pest in Australia? Or super adorable fluffy animals? We started studying The Rabbits by Shaun Tan, learning about the significance of the rabbits and who they are referring too. We also learnt what a numbat is. What a funky Australian animal.

History – Do you know what Ferdinand Magellan is famous for? Do you know what he made possible? We do! He is the first person (well his crew was) to circumnavigate the globe!

PDHPE – so much leaping and dancing up a storm!

Now I gotta cut loose, Footloose, kick off the Sunday shoes! (or is it now Friday shoes?)
