Principal's Report

Semester 2 Update

As we work our way into Semester 2, 2020, we remain vigilant around the current health circumstances that prevail.  There are constant reminders across all forms of media that it is vital that all communities, and our school community is no exception, continue to follow the key practices around health and safety.  The advice that continues to flow into schools in a timely and regular manner from the Department of Education and Health, keeps our school community informed and provides clear guidance around the management of schools.  Colyton High School, like the overwhelming majority of schools, continues to adhere to these guidelines and recommended practices and as a result continues to be a safe environment for staff and students.  The health data collected supports the fact that schools remain among the safest places in communities, especially given the number of staff, students and essential visitors that move through schools each day. Social distancing between adults, remains a priority, but health advice around social distancing between students and between students and staff, is that it is not necessary at this time. We do encourage all people to respect each other’s space when it is requested, however, and visitation to the school remains as for essential reasons only.

Thank you Parents / Carers

Once again we thank parents, carers and students for playing their roles in keeping Colyton High School healthy and safe.  It is noticeable that there is an absence of students presenting to school with even the mildest of illness. Health advice remains in place, to keep your child at home when in the past they may have been sent to school.  This includes mild illness such as sore throats, minor coughs and sniffles.  Parents and carers are also taking health advice seriously around getting their families tested for the virus and closely applying and we thank them for keeping us informed of the results.  Supplies of sanitiser and cleaning products remain strong and we have effective processes around keeping supplies in learning spaces, topped up. If you have any particular concerns, please don’t not hesitate to check with us.

Covid and Absenteeism

The benefit of staff and students staying home with mild illness is that others who remain at school, remain healthier and there is less chance of spread of more common illnesses like colds and flu. Staff and students who have been kept home are returning to school more quickly as they are resting at earlier stages of illness and recovering more quickly.  Please be reminded that there will be complete understanding around higher absenteeism rates for your child for reasons like this, at this time.  However, it is always worthwhile getting a medical certificate when you do visit a doctor, especially if the absence is longer than a few days.

I will take this opportunity to remind everyone that, under current requirements, staff and students with cold or flu like symptoms, WILL NOT be able to return to school unless a copy of the negative COVID-19 test result has been PROVIDED TO SCHOOL. These test results can be emailed to the school, sent through Skoolbag, or handed to the office upon return. Thank you for abiding by that.

HSC 2020

For those parents and carers of HSC 2020 students, please be reminded that NESA, who is responsible for administering the HSC, is well and truly aware that this is an atypical (not normal) year of study.  They continue to remind students, parents and carers that students will be expected to stay away from an exam on any day they are sick. We will hear more as the exams approach, however, I am sure that students will be expected to also present medical certificates, so keep that in mind. NESA is preparing arrangements for the higher than expected rates of absenteeism from exams.

There will also be protocols around keeping exam centres (ours is the school hall), healthy and safe. Colyton High School will be diligently applying those guidelines. Following the exams when results are beginning to flow, universities will also be implementing a range of processes to fill their courses.  This will include extending the usual special schemes requiring school recommendation.  So Year 12 students aspiring to university should stay on track and keep working hard towards their goals. Our Transition Team, Mr Brown, Miss Harman and Mrs Kaur (Careers) will continue to support our Year 12 students towards their career and course aspirations. Our best advice to students is to not stress about all this and just keep working hard and doing their best.

School Environment Improvements

Our efforts to continue to improve the safety and appeal of our school environment are bearing fruit with key projects advancing.  Very soon we will have an electronic, “buzz in” system at the front foyer door which remains the key access point into the school for pedestrians.  This door will remain locked during the day and will be monitored by office staff who will respond to “buzz in” requests from visitors.  Later this year we will commence work around the front, external gate and CCTV cameras across the school. The gate too, will be a “buzz in” system with intercom and camera, monitored by the front office. We thank you for your understanding around this change but we are sure you will appreciate how much safer this will make our school for your children, with only minor inconvenience for visitors. As this edition of the Newsletter goes to publish phase, I am meeting with the successful contractor who will commence work on our new volleyball courts.  We are confident this will prove to be very popular amongst our students.

A Final Word

In conclusion, thank you for continuing to work so well with us throughout this challenging year. Many of our routines are very close to normal while some are yet to return at all. We will continue to keep you informed across our various media platforms as things unfold across Semester 2.

MR D BUTLER

PRINCIPAL

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Welcome back everyone! It is great to be back to school and I am looking forward to an excellent term. I would like to thank students, caregivers and staff for their effort and support during the transition into online/at home learning that occurred over the last two terms. It was a huge effort and we are happy to have the students back in the classroom and seeing some return to normalcy with safety measures in place.

Year 11 Students have entered their final term of their year before they transition into Year 12 in Term 4. This is a crucial time for these students. They will be completing their final units of learning and will be sitting final examinations in Weeks 9 and 10. It is important that students and their carers ensure that they are keeping up with the work and clearing any outstanding N Awards before this time.

The Year 11 senior jackets arrived last term and those students who were able to purchase them at that time are wearing them with pride. They look amazing. I would like to acknowledge the hard work of their Year Advisers, Ms Grewal and Ms Dobie. Their efforts have enabled students to have their jackets in time for the colder months and can truly use them for the full two years that they have left. I would like to encourage all students to ensure that they wear full school uniform every day. It is especially important for our seniors to set an example for our younger students – show them how fantastic you look when you dress to impress!

Students interested in leadership have been given the opportunity to nominate themselves to be part of our School Leadership Team. The application process for School Captain and Senior Leadership positions for 2021 are underway. Nomination forms have been given to interested students and they are due by close of business on Friday 7th of August.

Year 8 Students have started Term 3 well, with the majority of students showing that they can be safe, respectful learners. In our first Year Meeting in Week 1, I spoke to the cohort about the importance of speaking kindly to one another. I have also emphasised the importance of seeking the support of staff to help resolve conflicts at an early stage. Students are encouraged to tell their classroom teacher, their Year Advisers, their Mentors, Head Teachers or Deputy Principal rather than confront students that they have an issue with. It is an important step in keeping our school a safe place.

The Year 8 cohort have some decisions to make this term about their subject selections for Year 9 and 10. Due to Covid restrictions, information about what subjects are being offered will be presented to students on Monday, August 17, during the school day. Students will take that information home to parents, discuss what they are interested in taking and complete and sign the subject selection form. These forms need to be returned to school by Tuesday, August 25. Information that is presented to students will be available to parents on our online platforms.

I wish everybody a very successful Term 3.

PBL NEWS

Please give a big virtual round of applause to the fabulous PBL team for their hard work. The PBL team has worked tirelessly throughout last term on a few different projects in order to implement a positive learning environment for our students.

We were able to complete two of the projects to give a new look to the school. Thanks to Ms Ciacciarelli and the school leaders for coordinating the PBL Wall. Ms Ciacciarelli worked with the Student Leaders in designing the artwork, which has given our leaders a voice in improving the school atmosphere.

The other project we were working on was the step riser designs in all stairwells in each block. We were able to gather designs from each faculty area and work together to create a fresh look to the school, to boost the positivity and the students’ interests. After the completion, students and teachers were very excited to visit each block to check out these designs to select the best one of all. Thanks to the staff and Ms Gibson for working together with me in these designs to create a warm and welcoming place in our school.

PBL noticeboard is another initiative taken by the team this term, with Mr Fisher and Ms Abraham coordinating this project. The noticeboard will be filled with students’ positive stories, affirmations etc. Teachers said that it will emphasise the literacy focus at school and also will add to students’ interest in reading and writing.

Stay tuned everyone to see the other initiatives taken by the team. Some of them are lunch time House competitions coordinated by Ms Ransom and Ms Grewal. Teacher spirit coordinated by Ms Lam, Ms Bruin and Mrs Johal. Garden project team coordinated by Ms Sabbatini and Ms Parish, and last but not least our literacy and numeracy team coordinated by Ms Chambers, Ms Gorman and Mr Trinh. Students and the homeroom teachers are enjoy trying out Mr Trinh’s numeracy challenges and are also enjoying reading stories provided by the literacy team.

Teachers are rewarding students with merits and academic awards throughout the term to encourage students to display positive behaviour and participate in all class activities. Thanks to the Admin staff, especially to Ms Raymond and Ms Poole for printing hundreds of awards for our students.

Our prime focus is to implement PBL effectively at our school in order to have a safe learning environment for all our students. A big thank you to Mr Butler and the executives for supporting our work on these projects and a massive thank you to the teachers for supporting us to implement PBL, to create a new atmosphere at our school. I urge the Colyton community to work together as a team to see the benefits, and the importance of a safe and happy environment at school.

Peer Leader News

Tree Day

Colyton High School Peer Leaders supported and guided the Year 7 cohort for our Tree Planting Day on Friday 14th August 2020. This day provided a positive way for the Year 7 students to connect with nature, by planting trees and shrubs to improve our natural environment. This project has been in progress since Term 2 with Peer Leaders meeting with the Environmental Team at Penrith Council to provide advice and tree essential information to ensure our trees grow. This program aimed to connect students with nature, and to inspire and educate our future generations, on the importance, trees play in society. The day was very successful, they managed to plant 140 native trees and shrubs which will provide shade in the long term for the sporting fields. In addition to planting trees, the Year 7 students wrote a letter to their future self, which was buried in a time capsule. This will be opened when they graduate Year 12. Well done to all involved.

STELR STEM Science!

The CLC Science Transition Program where Year 5 and 6 Primary School students come into Colyton High School Science laboratories to get hands-on science experience, was unfortunately put on hold, due to COVID - 19 restrictions last term. Some of our CLC mentors, Year 9 and 10 student volunteers, however, used the time to try and learn some new technology to equip them further in learning and mentoring in Science.

They used the ATSE (Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering) STELR Project Renewable Energy kits to produce different types of renewable energy.

The students worked with solar and kinetic energy looking at energy transformations and transfers, investigating a range of situations: hand-cranked generator, commercial battery, PV cells/solar panels, testing solar cells in series and parallel, angle of tilt, using multimeters - measuring output voltage/current, using solar power produced to operate a small fan, LED, siren etc. We hope they would pass on the knowledge and skills they have garnered to their juniors in future. Well done guys!

Careers

Year 12 exit interviews are on now, and it is compulsory to complete the online exit plan form and attend the interview. The exit interview would assist and guide HSC students to achieve their goals and inform them of the latest opportunities available in their area of interest.

Due to COVID19, there are significant changes and new procedures introduced to all the educational areas.  Some Universities have introduced the Entry Pathways based on your Year 11 marks and progress. Due to this pandemic situation, lots of activities and open information days are cancelled and converted into online virtual career information sessions. Many organisations are offering personal zoom sessions on request. Feel free to see me if you need some information, assistance in the application form, job application or help in your resume.

I wish all of my Year 12 students the best of luck with their exams, major works, performances and final assessments. This term is a valuable time to prepare for the upcoming HSC Exams. I encourage the students to use their time wisely with their teachers and to be productive, reflect study and prepare as best you can.

Penrith Air League Squadron returned for Term 3

We are writing to let you know that the Penrith Boys Squadron of the Australian Air League has returned to regular meetings at Melrose Hall, 169 Great Western Highway EMU PLAINS 2750  on Thursday evenings from 7pm

Earlier this year following the implementation of COVID-19 restrictions, the Air League suspended its face to face meeting nights and Penrith Squadron moved to an online format for its cadets using video conferencing. With restrictions now easing, the Squadron has returned to its regular activities whilst observing social distancing, and we invite young people, who may be interested, to come down with their parents and learn what the Air League has to offer.

The Australian Air League is a nationwide organisation for young people aged from 8 to 18 years. Staffed by volunteers and self-funding, it teaches leadership skills and provides a wide range of interesting and exciting activities such as camping and hiking, sport and physical recreation, building and flying model aircraft and ceremonial drill. Through classes and practical demonstration members learn the theory of aviation and a wide range of associated topics such as Meteorology, Navigation, Aero Engines and Aircraft Construction, as well as general interest subjects such as photography, field craft and community service.

The Air League also provides a range of flying experiences for its members, from simple scenic joy flights through to gliding and powered-flying training, from private pilot licence (PPL) through to airline entry standards – all in aircraft owned, operated and professionally maintained by our staff.

The Australian Air League is also approved as an Active Kids and Creative Kids Provider registered with Service NSW. Active Kids is a program to help NSW families meet the cost of getting their kids into sport and active fitness and recreation activities. Information can be found online at
https://sport.nsw.gov.au/sectordevelopment/activekids

Running a strong program that is both fun and educational, the Australian Air League is making fine citizens out of young Australians.  Currently there are also a number of other Squadrons in Western Sydney including RichmondBlacktown and Parramatta – call 1800 502 175 for details.
