Week 10

Acting Principal Update

Welcome to Week 10

The term has gone so quickly and holidays are almost here.

Thankyou to all parents and carers who were able to come to Student Led Conferences last week. I hope you enjoyed hearing from your children about the  learning and progress that they have made.

We had a fantastic assembly last Friday in the muster area. It was wonderful to see so many children and staff dressing up and joining in the fun at our BOOKWEEK PARADE. Congratulations to our winners. We hope you enjoy your books.

This Friday we have a performance at 11am in the library from our INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC students as well as NT school of music teachers. Mark Bleakly, our music teacher does a great job with our students and the improved confidence in all students is great to see. Please don’t hesitate to contact the front office if you would like your child to begin instrumental lessons.

Over the last few weeks we have had many of our older students representing our school in a variety of SCHOOL SPORT events. Thankyou to our teachers for organising these extra events for our students to be part of. Congratulations to our representatives.

Throughout a school term, some of our students in Years 3-6 volunteer to referee sports at lunch time. Each time they referee, they are given points. At the end of the term, the students with the most points are selected to join 2 adults at REFEREE LUNCH. Yesterday Mr Brent and Mrs Bernardino enjoyed taking the winners this term to Casuarina Club.

MOVING TO MIDDLE SCHOOL: Our Year 6 students are already preparing for their next step in their education. This has involved visits to several Middle schools close to us. The opportunity to learn about and experience the new setting they will be moving to is crucial in supporting our students to transition smoothly from Primary school to Middle school.

I hope you all enjoy the rest of our short week and have a safe and happy holiday break together with your family.

Kind regards

Gen Donohue [Acting Principal]

We are certainly proud of all our students for their ongoing positive attitude towards learning and their time at school.

Class Points

Muster is held at Alawa after each recess and lunch break - this gives us an opportunity for everyone to settle from playtime, share any celebrations and work on consistency of messages and expectation.

Each week we allocate class points during Muster time recognising those students who were ready and waiting to go back to class calmly and quietly after break times. The winning class from each 3 weeks will receive ice-blocks from Ms Cartwright and get to choose 5 songs that will play before our bells for the following 3 weeks.

The class with the most points in Week 9 of Term 3 was....Year 4/5 Lawrence with 135 points!!!

The winning class for weeks 7-9 is..... Year 2 Ward with 394 points!!!

House Points

Students at Alawa receive raffle tickets [house points] for their attitude and behaviour in the playground and out the front of the school at the end of the day. These are then counted on a Friday along with the points for students in full uniform, wearing house shirts etc.  At the end of each term we also include the points earnt through the recycling project and water bottle checks.

In Week 9 of Term 3 Finnis was ahead of Manton and Goyder with 660 points!!!

In the lead for the year we still have Finnis with 80046 points!!!

Attendance

Primary School Average for Week 9 Term 3: 90.75%

It is still of concern how many students are missing school each week.

The class with the highest attendance for Week 9: Year 3 Block with 99.62%!!! Amazing job!!!

In the lead for the term we have.... Year 3 Block with 94.49%!!!

Lates

Arriving late for school has a significant impact on your child’s learning and engagement in the education program.

There were 51 late arrivals in Transition—Year 6 in Week 9 Term 3!

For Week 9 the class with the least lates was: Transition Henschke with 0 lates!!!

In the lead for the term we have...2 Ward and 5/6 Baines with 11 late arrivals each!

Recycling

Alawa Recycling is not only an important part of our fundraising activities here at Alawa with all proceeds going directly back into the farm, but also a vital step in helping us achieve the goal of creating a more sustainable farm and garden program.

Items can be deposited into the house bags in the back car park and  each item earns a point for each house.

Library news

What a busy few weeks we have had. I want to say a huge THANK YOU to all of those parents who volunteered to help with Book Fair last week and for pack up on Monday morning. Your assistance has been appreciated more than you know.

It is hard to believe that the school holidays are now just a few days away! While the holidays are a chance for kids to have a break from learning and reset it is important for them to continue using skills they have been learning and exploring so they don’t lose the progress they have made. Reading is one aspect of learning that is important to practice and re-enforce. The bonus of reading is that books and activity books are an easy and entertaining way your child can spend time practicing their learning or having quality time with you listening to a story. If you or your child needs some ideas on what to read, check out some of the websites listed below. You can also ask your local librarian for what is new, popular or just a great read.
