Bracknell Primary School Newsletter

Issue 7 - 21 May 2019

FROM THE A/PRINCIPAL’S DESK - Amanda Bird

Hi all,

Welcome to our new look eNewsletter.  The developers are still doing a few tweeks to the product but we are running with this version for the moment as it will give those using apps a more readable newsletter online. The texts appears the same on all devices but will appear differently in width the bigger your device is. One of the features of this newsletter is that we can add video as well as photos.  I've attached the "We Have A Go" song that we were learning in Prep last week.  I hope you enjoy these new features and we welcome your feedback.

Last week, our grade 3s and 5s completed NAPLAN Online.  You may have heard about some of the issues in the news during the week.  We had a really smooth week and all children were able to complete the tests.  Moving to the online testing has the potential to greatly improve both the efficiency and effectiveness of the tests; enabling us to receive results quicker and tailoring the questioning for students abilities. NAPLAN is an important testing phase for schools as it gives us data about how we can improve our school and our teaching.

Last Friday, we participated in the Walk Safely to School Day.  Our attendance at this event was outstanding and many bystanders commented on how smart we looked in our school uniforms.  What a great way to start the day.

Today we completed our Cross Country and looking out my window now it looks like it was just in time.  What a great morning we had.  Many thanks to Mr Eeles for training our students so well during PE.  I was very impressed with the quality of running and the determination shown by our students.  At the end of the Grade 5 races the Houses were level on points, so the Grade 6 races were super important.  Congratulations to Leonard who were our final winners but it was a close contest.

Tomorrow, is the National Simultaneous Storytime.  This annual campaign aims to encourage our children to read more and enjoy more books.  We will be holding our Storytime at 10:45 in the Multi.  Little Possums, we would love you to join us too.  All welcome.

Kind regards,

Amanda Bird

UPPER PRIMARY NEWS

In Upper primary we are learning to:

~ Construct a variety of sentences (simple, compound and complex) to connect and express ideas

~ Use a range of language features (e.g adjectives, adverbs emotive language, similes) to engage a reader and add specific detail to support a point of view

Students have been successful with these learning intentions by:

~ Experimenting and taking risks with their writing

~ Using our sentence wall for ideas and clarification

~ Listening to quality literature and identifying what makes us engaged as the audience

Some examples of students work have been provided to demonstrate our learning so far. We listened to Jackie French’s book, ‘Flood’ and ‘Fire’ as well as some ANZAC texts to help generate our own ideas.

We also reflected on why it is important to have strong writing skills and knowledge of sentences.:

“It helps you for your future”

“It’s important to express yourself”

“It makes you think, imagine and be excited”

“ To be able to build a powerful resume”

“You use writing skills in all careers”

“You learn to be creative”

“You learn skills that help you express ideas and how to talk”

“Teaches how to express yourself”

All students have shown great improvement early in the year and I look forward to students developing their skills further.

The big red river of fire makes buildings fall down into a red ocean and makes it spreads like a tsunami. The fire travels over mountains while 37 helicopters and 3 planes can’t stop it. As farm land homes get demolished, people try to escape but not everyone makes it out alive. People run and drive to get out of the way of the moving red wall. Fire fighters try to think of ways to stop the beastly tsunami, while people run for their lives.

On a cold saddened day, heavy rain hits gradually drenching the ground in seconds. Water is soon filling the streets, while waves begin crashing at the shore, guiding the biggest wave of all. It sends water everywhere that destroys people’s needs. The feel of the ice, cold water sends shivers through your body making you believe you have hypothermia. A scream for help echoes through town, meanwhile we are all trapped inside our homes full of fear. As soon as night comes, people search the water for lives that are as equally important as the heroes searching. No one feared to sleep as a result of waves crashing against homes and the cries of help.

~ William

Skies are grey. The rain is on its way. Rain pours down on the dry ground although it’s soaking the water up like a sponge, therefore the water will spread through the town like a river, destroying everything in its path.  While the community flees, the flood begins to bleed through the homes and trees, yet the rain has stopped, the river like flood still flows through the town. After days and days the flood has slowly disappeared, now the clean-up must begin. Helping hands there for people that are in need despite what has been lost, day after day, week after week the land is now sweet.

~ Caitlin

A bushfire can begin by people lighting them on purpose, not putting the coal out properly but most bushfires start by bright devastating lightning strikes. As soon as it hits the trees, sparks light everything. After the fire ends, there’s a pitch, black sky filled with thick, black smoke. When the fire is over, all the beautiful trees turn to ash but not all is lost. The burnt trees have dropped seeds that grow back but some things don’t start a new life.

~ Curtis

The mothers, wives and children fill the lane with tears as the fellow soldiers sail away. When the ANZAC’s arrive on the rocky shore of Gallipoli, the Turkish spot them from a mile away. The Turkish fearfully grab their guns, helmets and uniforms and get ready for the fight. The ANZAC’S slowly climb up the soggy hill. The first gun shot and the first man went down. The Turkish obnoxiously shot our men down.

~ Willow

As the chalky, horrible, innocent leaves fall to the naked ground in disappointment, they disappear forever. The trees get lighter and lighter, and all of a sudden there are no beautiful trees left alive. The fire gets closer and closer to the disappointed family. The little boy watches all of his perfect memories vanish and his toys going to waste. There is nothing left to see other than the burnt house so the sad family leaves. The dogs bark as they leave, while watching the house for the last time in tears. The little girl waves good bye to everything she ever loved.

~ Jazzelle

STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL (SRC) NEWS

Soft Plastic Concerns

Yesterday the SRC President, Jayden and Vice President, Zac presented us with some alarming data about the amount of soft plastics we are using at Bracknell Primary School.

Following a survey of wrapping used in lunch boxes they were able to extrapolate that over a year Bracknell Primary School uses 26 km of gladwrap and ziplock bags. That’s enough soft plastic to stretch between Bracknell and Launceston!

“Our SRC are keen to reduce this amount of waste,” said Jayden “because it all goes to landfill and takes between 10 to 1000 years to decompose.”

“We are going to fundraise so we can make every child at Bracknell a beeswax wrap” said Zac.  “These wraps can be used to wrap food, then taken home again, wiped down and re used many times over.”

Our ‘Come as a Twin Day’ on Thursday June 6th is a major fundraiser to support purchasing 100% cotton, beeswax and jojoba oil needed to make the wraps.  We would appreciate any donations of cotton material (must be 100% cotton) to help us get started.

Please support our SRC initiative and make a difference to our environment.
