Bogangar Public School Newsletter

Term 3 Week 4, 2019

Message from, Principal - Mrs M Kelly

Dear Parents & Carers,

Bogangar Public School has been abuzz with activity over the last two weeks with students having the opportunity to engage in multiple learning activities outside the classroom.

These activities have included the Debating Gala Day, Byron Writers Festival, Lawn Bowls, Touch Football Gala Day, Premiers Spelling Bee, school Leaders and Choir visit to Pottsville Nursing Home, District Athletics Carnival and the Juraki Surf Festival.

Student inclusiveness in these activities has certainly complimented the Every Student, Every Voice theme of 2019 Education Week which was celebrated last week at Bogangar Public School.

Specifically for Education Week, students opened their classrooms for their parents and then showcased some of their many talents at a special K-6 assembly.

I sincerely acknowledge and thank our dedicated staff for providing a diverse range of opportunities for Bogangar Public School students.

Tell Them From Me Survey

This term, Bogangar PS, like many other public schools in the state, will participate in a Department of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student, parent and teacher surveys.

The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices. This valuable feedback will help our school make practical improvements.

Detailed information, FAQs for parents/carers about the surveys and a consent form for student withdrawal will be sent home with students and also posted on our Skoolbag app.

Please keep an eye out for this information and make a note in your diary to engage when the on-line survey is opened.

The Tell Them From Me Parent Survey (Term 3, 2019)

This Term, our school will be participating in the Partners in Learning parent survey, another part of the Tell Them From Me suite of surveys (student, teacher and parent surveys) on student engagement. The survey asks parents and carers questions about different factors that are known to impact on student wellbeing and engagement.

Running this survey will help our school understand parents’ and carers’ perspectives on their child’s experience at school. These include: communication between parents/carers and staff, activities and practices at home and parent/carer views on the school's support of learning and behaviour. This valuable feedback will help our school make practical improvements.

The survey is conducted entirely online on smartphones, iPads, tablets, laptops or computers. The survey will typically take 15 minutes or less to complete and is completely confidential. The parent survey will be conducted between 26 August and 20 September 2019. Although participating in the survey is entirely voluntary, your responses are very much appreciated.

Our school will provide further information about how to access the survey. In the meantime, more information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/

The survey is available in 23 languages.

The Tell Them From Me Student Survey (Term 3, 2019)

I am delighted that this term, our school, like many other public schools in the state, will participate in a Department of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The survey measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices.

You may remember that our students also participated in a Tell Them From Me student survey in Term 1 this year. Asking students to complete the survey twice in one year allows us to identify trends in student responses as well as track engagement and motivation across the school year.

The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide us with valuable and quick feedback on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. More than 6,300 schools in Australia and around the world have used Tell Them From Me to survey 5.4 million students. Capturing the voices of our students will help improve how we do things at our school.

More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au

I want to assure you that the survey is confidential. The survey is conducted online and will typically take less than 30 minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours between 27 August and 5 September 2019. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary.

A consent form and FAQs for parents/carers about the survey has been sent home with students. If you do not want your child or children to participate, please return the form to school by Monday 26th August 2019. Copies of the form and FAQs are available from: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information-for-parents.

The consent form and FAQs are available in 23 languages.

SNIPPETS OF WHAT'S BEEN HAPPENING AROUND BOGANGAR PUBLIC SCHOOL

News from K/1 Reef

Lots of learning and fun has been happening in K/1 Reef.

Last term we finished with an excursion to Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, which has lead into our focus on Australian animals for this term.

We have celebrated 100 days of learning as we have been counting each day that we have been at school, using our groups of 10 to extend our number knowledge.

We have even noticed how much smarter we have become!

We enjoyed the Colour Run in week 1, which was a fantastic afternoon of colourful fundraising fun!

Week 3 saw us hosting our first whole school assembly which was a great opportunity for us to practise our public speaking skills.

We even showed off a dance we have been learning!

Next Tuesday we have our Book Week Parade where we will all be dressed up in our favourite book characters to celebrate reading being our super power!

And then we are off to the theatre!

So much fun and learning happening. We are really excited about the term ahead. Keep your eyes on Skoolbag and Instagram to check out all the fun.

Byron Bay Writer's Festival

On Wednesday the 31st of July, 50 students got the chance to go to the Byron Bay Writer's Festival at Byron High School.

We listened to John Flanagan talk about books being published, different publishers liking different books, his books and inspiration.

Then we listened to Isobelle Carmody. She was very funny. She had 8 younger siblings and their mum scared them not to go outside or monsters and murderers would get them while she was at work.

She has written LOTS of books. We had a great time, I can’t wait to get my pencil and paper out to start writing a story.

Congratulations to those students that were awarded with their 100 nights of reading.

Education Week 2019 - Every Student, Every Voice!

Thanks you to everyone who came and helped us celebrate Education week on Tuesday 6th August.

A fun day was had by all and the feedback was fantastic!

I know lots of students really enjoyed having the opportunity to have lunch with their families and play in the playground! I even saw some parents showing off their skills on the basketball court along with skipping ropes and handball games!

There were lots of very proud students who embraced the chance to show off their classrooms to their family members and give them a rare insight into the classroom environment.

The achievements of public education and our school was highlighted with a whole school assembly, showcasing just what makes Bogangar Public School such a great learning community to be part of. The theme for Education Week was " Every Student, Every Voice" and we definitely showcased that!

We all thoroughly enjoyed the performances from our 3 dance groups, along with our school choir.  Our whole school community got together to sing " Your the voice" and we even got an insight into what the students themselves love about Bogangar Public School.

We would like to thank the community for their ongoing support in knowing that every student is valued, cared for and encouraged to have a voice in their educational journey.

BOOK WEEK - Reading is my Super Power!

BOOK WEEK 2019 - Reading is my Super Power!

The next big event on our school calendar is Book Week!

This year we will be celebrating on Tuesday 20th August with a parade at 9:30 am. All students in Kindergarten to Year 6 are asked to dress up as a book character.

The theme this year is " Reading is my Super Power" which encourages students to think about all the things that makes them unique, happy and wonderful individuals.

With only 1 week to go, it's time to start thinking about dressing up as your favourite character, someone that inspires you, or come along wearing something that makes you feel powerful or amazing!

We can't wait to see all the students dressed up and celebrating the powerful world of literature.

SPORTS NEWS

Touch Football Gala Day

On the 7th of August Mr Quirk accompanied twelve boys and nine girls to participate in the Touch Football Gala Day.

Everyone had a wonderful day and showed great sportsmanship against some tough opposition.

Both teams lost against Terranora in the first games. In the second game the boys were unlucky to lose against Kingscliff and the girls lost against a well-oiled Pottsville team.

However, the boys dominated and won against Cudgen in our final game and the girls fought hard and played their best game yet but were unfortunate to lose against a physically tough Tweed Heads team.

Even though there were some ups and downs both teams tried their best, stepping up and working together to improve with each set of six.

We would like to give a special mention and thanks to the parents for cheering us on and helping out on the day. Mr Quirk is blown away with the students’ performances and leadership. He is proud of every single one of us.

Bring on the next game!
