Issue 2019 / 15

FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK

As we conclude Term 3, we are farewelling the Class of 2019. In the significant events of this week, the students of Year 12 have walked out the gates of our School for the last time. For two of this group, their journey began in 1998 and 2000 respectively, for the Halford and Toumi-Coussinet families, it is particularly poignant moment. Each year the parents of our HSC class, combine to leave a lasting memory and in this vein, I wish to thank the Class of 2019 for their generosity in providing our School with a new mixing desk to improve the sound system in the Hall, something that our entire community will appreciate.

We live in a cyclical environment. Therefore, as one group is farewelled, we now welcome our new senior students, the Class of 2020. In the Induction Assembly on Friday, this new team were invested, and the Prefect body announced. We wish them well in the significant role they have assumed. In so doing, we encourage the entire cohort to do their personal best in the academic expectations we have for them; additionally, we want each member of the HSC group to be supportive of those around them, and to reach out to all within our family, the Pittwater House family. We want to acknowledge in twelve months, that this group will have left a unique community and provided healthy opportunities and an environment that will serve us well for years to come.

In both the Valedictory Assembly and the Induction Assembly, we see inclusion. Each year, members of our Junior School have a special role, in singing and providing the Band accompaniment. In this, the connectivity of our primary and secondary schools shows that all important link and reminds our senior parent body of the critical journey their children have taken. It is always a special moment.

The week too has seen a record-breaking Sports Awards Evening, where our ever-growing list of achievements for so many students was acknowledged. Whilst we want maximum participation and enjoyment for all our students, it is worthy of note that this year has seen 88 teams take to the field, pitch and court; that we have had 4 students represent Australia in their chosen sport and a further 42 students represent New South Wales. This is an almighty achievement for a school the size of Pittwater House. None of this would occur without significant support from our sport and coaching staff, and you, as parents. Sincere thanks to you all.

Whilst the coming three-week Recess will provide a necessary time for rest and refreshment, for some there is work to be done. Our Year 12 students have a program of classes with their teachers who willingly give up their holidays to support our graduating students. The Cadets, under their new command undertake a Spring Bivouac and a group of middle years students are off to New Caledonia to hone up their French skills. To all these staff, my thanks.

I wish you all well and look forward to all that Term 4 will bring.

A visual account of this past week is an appropriate way to farewell the Class of 2019 and Term 3.

With every good wish.

Duke of Edinburgh Award

Term 3 Duke of Edinburgh AwardsCongratulations to Penelope (C12) on achieving her Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award.

Last Friday Penelope attended the Town Hall to receive her award from His Royal Highness The Earl of Wessex (Prince Edward).

Witnessed by her father, brother and Dr Hillier, the award ceremony was a wonderful way to celebrate such an amazing accomplishment. It was sad that Penny's mother was on a trek to the Kakoda Track and missed this wonderful ceremony.

Overall Duke of Edinburgh award achievers this term are:

Silver Award: Daya  (C12)

Bronze Award: Paris (C10) and Thomas (G12).

Well done to all!

Everyone at Pittwater House is extremely proud of you.

JUNIOR SCHOOL NEWS

From the Head of Junior School

As we prepare to break for 3 weeks before recommencing in Term 4, I would like to reflect on the diligent effort of all students, teachers and parents involved in the Junior School this term and thank you all greatly for your support. I wish you all a restful break and look forward to welcoming you all back for Term 4, with students wearing summer uniform. Over the break please take the time to check that the students’ summer uniforms still fit and that the girls’ dresses are of an appropriate length. The students’ appearance should always be as the per School policy.

While on that matter, I would also like to remind all families about our Allergy Awareness policy. As quite a number of students in the Junior School are anaphylactic, particularly to a variety of nuts, any knowing inclusion of nuts or nut products in your child’s School food could mean death to another child. This is a very blunt but true statement. It has been noticed that some students are bringing bare nuts, nut butter spreads, pesto, Nutella, almond and other nut milks to school. Please save these foods for home.

Year 6 Study Tour to Canberra
Year 6 is now well-prepared for their study tour to Canberra in Week 1 of Term 4. The coaches will leave South Creek Road car park at 7:00am sharp on Monday 14 October. A report on their trip will be provided on their return on Thursday 17 October. Please refer to your Skoolbag notes for specific details.

Robokids
Robokids has been a hugely successful club and will run again next term. All the information for the Monday afternoon activity is to be found on the Robokids flyer below. Please register via the trybooking link. If you participated in Term 3, you must re-register for Term 4.

Boots and All
Your children may have brought home the message delivered by the SRC in Assembly last Friday about supporting a charity called Boots and All. Past parent, Donna McMullen, has contacted the School to make us aware of the plight of young Indigenous children in the Moree district who do not have the luxury of football boots and sports shoes. As our winter sports season is coming to a close and the boots being worn this season will probably not fit next season, donating your 2019 football boots and trainers would be a wonderful opportunity to make a difference in an Indigenous child’s life. You can either bring them into School now or use the holidays for a thorough clean out of the sports shoe cupboard and bring them to School in Week 1 Term 4. Please don’t donate shoes that are not in reasonable condition.

Year 1 - Country and City Life

In Week 7 the Year 1 students went on an excursion to Calmsely Hill City Farm to find out more about life in the country. The students thoroughly enjoyed the experience and learnt a great deal about the different animals that are found on a farm, how we use the animal produce and some of the jobs involved in keeping a farm running.  We have compiled some of the students excursion highlights to share with you.

Emaan – My favourite animal was the cow because we got to milk it.

Annie – The highlight of the farm visit was learning the new animal names, for example a male pig is called a boar and the baby pigs are called piglets.

Matthew – My favourite thing at Calmsely Hill Farm was patting the animal, they were really soft.

Raven – The best part of Calmsely Hill Farm was milking the cow named ‘Charlie’.

Julian – The best part of our farm excursion was the tractor ride. I also enjoyed watching the whip cracking show and Mrs Garrad went on stage and cracked the whip.

Leon – My favourite thing that happened at Calmsely Hill Farm was the dog show. I enjoyed it because Duke the sheepdog was really funny and entertaining.

Mosman Shield

The dark clouds painted a theatrical backdrop for the Mosman Shield, an annual Rugby Union game against Mosman Preparatory school.  Pittwater House students from Year 5 and Year 6 were selected to play for the honour of winning the esteemed Mosman Shield.

As the boys descended upon the rugby fields in Terry Hills, it was clear that Pittwater House were there to take home the shield.  It had been 15 long years since Pittwater House had won the shield but the students from Year 5 and Year 6, under the Captaincy of Nicholas Selleck were determined to turn this around.

Tries were awarded to Nick , Noah and Ruann (2) with three try conversions and the boys walked away with a 28-10 victory.

The Year 5 and Year 6 boys showed courage, school spirit, grit and determination throughout the entire game and did not give up until the very end.  The defence was strong as players threw their bodies on the line and contested scrums.

Admirable sportsmanship was shown throughout the game and at the presentation ceremony where Nicholas congratulated the opposing team and thanked Mosman Prep, the umpires and all of the teachers and parents who attended.

If there are any students from Year 3 to Year 8 who are interested in participating in the Rugby Academy at school, it will continue to run in Term 4.  This is a good opportunity for students to start to build team relationships with each other (without competing).
