Holbrook Public School

Quality education for all, in a secure and caring environment

ISSUE 20: Term 4, Week 10 - Tuesday, 15 December 2020

From the Principal's desk

Welcome to Week 10, Term 4! I really do hope everyone is able to have a relaxing and enjoyable holiday break after such a tumultuous year. I can't thank the entire school community (students, staff, parents and extended family) enough for your support in 2020. It really does take a village to raise a child, and I think under the circumstances, we've all worked very well together to ensure the students of Holbrook Public School have had a successful year.

We don't usually put out a newsletter after Presentation Day, but with the new online version, we thought it would be nice, and easy enough, to recognise the Presentation Day award winners and Year 6 one last time.

Presentation Day

A big thank you to the community for all of the award donations, to Judith and Brenton for their coordination of the event, and to the School Leaders for presenting the ceremony. The number of families tuning in, peaked at 55 families (60%) in our Zoom webinar which was great. I'm glad we got to share this special event with the community.

Congratulations to our new School Leaders: Cooper Glass (Captain), Isaac Bennetts (Vice-Captain), Eli Toll (Prefect) and Jasmine Lieschke (Prefect).

Congratulations also to our new Sports House Leaders: Nate Kenney (Lawson House Captain), Tom Black (Lawson House Vice-Captain),  Georgie Cardile (Mackellar House Captain), Laycii Freund (Mackellar House Vice-Captain), Ryder McKillop (Paterson House Captain) and Aiden Walmsley (Paterson House Vice-Captain).

Year 6 Leaders' Lunch

Usually, it is just our Captains and Prefects who are invited to lunch in the final week of term, but this year, the leadership of the entire Year 6 group was recognised with a pizza lunch on Monday. See pictures below!

Year 6 Play: Cinderella Rides Again

Year 6 thespians entertained the K-2 students and 3-5 students with their Oscar-winning performances of Cinderella Rides Again. Thank you to Mrs Wedgwood who rivalled Steven Spielberg in her directing of the show.

Year 6 Farewell Dinner

The Year 6 Farewell Dinner will be enjoyed by staff and students tonight from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the Holbrook RS Club. Thank you to Mrs Wedgwood for her organisation of this event.

Mylee Toll

It was wonderful to have a visit from Mylee and Lauren Toll recently at school. We're are all so glad that Mylee's surgery went well, and we wish her all the very best in her recovery.

2021 Preparation

We have been busily planning for a great 2021 school year.

I am pleased to say we will have a brilliant staff once again, and I look forward to introducing new members of staff next year. Tanya-Lee Slater will join us as the relieving School Administration Manager  (SAM) whilst Tracey Mullavey is on leave for the year. Tanya is currently the SAM at Springdale Heights Public School in Albury. Congratulations to Christel Pargeter who has recently been appointed as a permanent classroom teacher at Holbrook Public School. She will be working in a higher duties role as a temporary Assistant Principal in 2021 as well. Miss Lavis will also continue in an Assistant Principal role, along with Mrs Wedgwood who will only be working two days per week. Felicity Morgan, from North Sydney Demonstration School, will join us as a temporary teacher next year as well. Felicity has a background in elite contemporary dance, so we look forward to the unique and creative skillset she will bring to the school in 2021. We will also be welcoming back Mrs Jessica Trethowan for two days per week.

Whilst we have set up six home classes based on our current enrolment estimates, if we get three more enrolments by the end of Week 2 in 2021, we could establish a seventh class. Therefore, at this stage I am hesitant to announce classes and teachers for 2021, due to a possible change.

Bluearth Program in 2021

We can now confirm that we will be working with the Bluearth Foundation in 2021, which is very exciting.

The Bluearth Foundation is a not for profit charity that offers a unique approach to experience physical activity. Using movement as a vehicle, the Bluearth Approach assists student development in the following domains – physical, emotional, social and cognitive.

The principles of application focus on:

  • Physical Activity is for every-body-mind
  • Building resilience and respect for self and others
  • Highlighting present moment awareness in movement (improving self-esteem) and the importance of everyday Mindfulness practice for students and teachers to take responsibility and care for their own health and wellbeing.

We will have a Bluearth facilitator working with three of our classes each fortnight next year, however, the philosophy, culture and opportunities will be implemented school-wide.

Leaders' Luncheon

Staff vs Year 6 basketball competition

It was wonderful to have our annual and much-anticipated staff vs Year 6 basketball competition today.

The game involved a lot of dribbling (mainly by the staff team) while their much younger counterparts blocked shots, fish hooked, and jab stepped their way to the end. Despite the deafening cries of "Go Year 6" from the spectators (which could be heard throughout Holbrook), the staff managed a close victory of 16-12.

Mrs Mullavey and Ms Mullins were incredibly relieved not to have to provide first aid, call an ambulance or fill in mountains of paperwork, on this, our second last day of the school year.

A big thank you to Lachlan Nevinson

We would like to extend a huge thank you to Lachlan Nevinson for providing the purple spotted gudgeons in our front office aquarium. Mr Nevinson has now taken them home to care for them during the school holidays and will return them in the new year. These aquatic residents are both entertaining and relaxing, and are a big hit with students and visitors alike.

Term 4 Week 10: Carnivàle and Celebration Activities K-6

To celebrate terrific student achievements, staff have organised a variety of activities for the last week of term.

Tuesday, 15 December: ‘Carnivàle’

Year 5 and 6 students will coordinate two sessions of activities; one being for the K-2 students, and then another session for the 3-6 students. The K-2 session will be in the morning, and the 3-6 session will be in the middle session.

Wednesday, 16 December: Games, Sports and Movie

There will be games and sports in the morning session for K-2 and 3-6 students. In the middle session, students will be able to watch a movie. In the afternoon session, students will be in home classes for board games and class-based activities. Students are able to wear casual clothes on the last day. Please note the clothes must be sun-safe (no singlet tops etc.). Footwear must be appropriate and suitable for sports. Students must have a broad-brimmed hat.

Canteen volunteers needed for Term 1, 2021

Do you have some free time in your calendar during Term 1 next year? If so, we would really value your time to help with lunch orders on Monday and/or Friday mornings. The process is simple:

1.      Sign in,

2.      The students will put their lunch orders in their class baskets,

3.      Sign out and take the baskets to the Holbrook Bakery,

It only takes around 45 minutes out of your day and your child loves to see you there. Please email Georgie Millard on gmillard75@gmail.com‎ to volunteer or if you have any questions.

End of year reminders

Please collect your child's medication from the office on Wednesday, 16 December.

CONSIDER DONATING YOUR OUTGROWN UNIFORMS

The second hand clothing shop would be most grateful for any donations of pre-loved uniforms in all sizes. Recycled uniforms are always in high demand and looking for a good home.
