From the Principal's Desk

A Message from the Principal

2020 Classes and Requests

At this stage we are looking to have 14 classes again next year, although the structure will change. We anticipate we will have: 2x Kindergarten, 2x Year 1, 3x Year 2, 2x Year 3, 2x Year 4 and 3x Year 5/6. If you have any requests regarding your child’s class for 2020, please submit your request in writing or by email to the office. Whilst we take all requests into consideration we cannot guarantee that all requests will be fulfilled.

State Athletics Carnival

Congratulations to Hamish B who will be representing Sydney East in discus at the State Athletics Carnival at Sydney Olympic Park this week. Good luck Hamish!

Regional Public Speaking

Congratulations to Lacey M from Kindergarten who will representing Woronora River and speaking at the Sydney Region Public Speaking Finals at St Peters PS next week. Good luck Lacey!

K-2 Gymnastics

We have been successful in obtaining a Sporting Schools grant for Term 4 and will be running a K-2 gymnastics program starting next Friday. This program will run each Friday for five weeks in partnership with Engadine Gymnastics. As a result of the grant there will be no cost to families.

Kindergarten Orientation

Our first Kindergarten Orientation session is coming up on Thursday 14 November from 9:30am to 10:45am. Our 2020 Kindergarten students will spend time in the classroom and their parents will attend an information session in the library. On Thursday 21 November from 9:30am to 11am our future students will again visit the classroom while their parents attend an information expo in the hall. We look forward to welcoming our next cohort of students and families!

Student Leaders 2020

We have had a high level of interest from Year 5 with 32 students who would like to be a Student Leader, SRC Executive or House Captain next year. Interviews with candidates will be taking place on Wednesday 13 November and the leader speeches and election will occur in Week 7. Best of luck to all candidates!

Kindergarten Enrolments 2020

Our enrolment processes for 2020 are well and truly underway. If you have a child starting school next year and you have not enrolled them yet, please call into the office to pick up an enrolment form.

Swimming Scheme

We are half way through the Swim Scheme and the students are all having fun and trying hard.

It is wonderful to see the improvement being made with some students already moving up a level.

Friday Bushwalking

In week 2, the Stage 3 non-PSSA children went on an adventurous bushwalk to Elbow Pools.  We walked down a steep rocky slope and steps that were made from the tree roots.  We walked along the long pipeline track.  Once we got to the destination we sat down on the hot grey rocks to regain our energy.

Soon we started walking again down to a small river where we took off our shoes and socks and went for a wander in the river.  Shortly after that we were off again, back up the natural steps and steep rocky slope.  At the top of the hill we sat down exhausted after a tiring but fun morning.

Year 4 Heathcote High School Visit

On Thursday 31 October, Year 4 sauntered over to Heathcote High School to visit the giant's land.  The first activity that our class did was wood work where we made little wooden boxes with our name on them, then we had to go over to the computer and write our name and choose a certain font.

Next we went to the cooking class and made mini pizzas that tasted really good.  We had to be careful because we were using dangerous tools.

The last activity was science where we did experiments with static electricity.  We put our hands on the conductor which made our hair stand tall.

We can't wait to go to high school!

State Drama

In week 2 the Drama Ensemble went to the State Drama Festival at the Seymour centre.  We caught the train to Redfern and then walked to the Festival.  It was a very warm day and the students got very hot, especially as we were wearing black.  Once we got to the Seymour Centre we were seated in the auditorium.  We got to watch the first six performances, while we waited nervously for our own.

At the end of our performance we attempted to open the suitcase but it was locked.  This was a hectic and nail biting time as this was not in the play.  Eventually, we levered it open.

Even though we had this minor mistake we still had a great time.  Good job Drama Ensemble!

Happy Heathcote Kids Playgroup

The group will meet each Friday from 9:00am to 10:00am in KV classroom. Please meet on the verandah outside the classroom. This playgroup is aimed at children from three to five years of age who will attend Heathcote Public School in the future. Come along for some art, craft, stories, playdoh fun and more!

If you have any further queries please contact Mrs Askew via the school office.

2020 School Travel Applications Now Open

Applications for student travel in 2020 opened on Friday, 11 October 2019. Students progressing to year 3 and year 7 no longer need to re-apply if they:

·       are continuing at the same school

·       are residing at the same address

·       have not been sent an expiry notification from Transport for NSW.

Where a student meets the new distance eligibility, the system will automatically update their entitlement. If they do not meet the new eligibility, they will receive an expiry notification via email. Students who have an entitlement approved under a medical condition which is due to expire will receive a notification advising them to re-apply. Term Bus Pass holders will receive a notification to re-apply. If students need to update their information or re-apply, they should go online to https://apps.transport.nsw.gov.au/ssts/updateDetails

Applications need to be submitted before 31 December 2019 to ensure student entitlements are updated and their current entitlement/card is not cancelled. If their application is submitted after 31 December 2019, the system will automatically cancel an entitlement/card and a new one will need to be issued. Students in the Opal network applying for a SSTS or Term Bus Pass entitlement for the first time will receive their card at their nominated postal address. Cards will be mailed out from January 2020.

P&C NEWS

President's Report

Thank you to those who attended the P&C meeting last week. Quite a few areas were covered at this meeting, including an update on the HOOSH building. More details can be found in the minutes and will be circulated.

At this meeting it was also decided to combine the last meeting for the year and the P&C dinner as December is a busy time of year for everyone and it can be hard to find a free night.  So, for the meeting 3 December we will be having our meeting at a local club/restaurant! More details regarding where we are going to follow.  We would love to see everyone there and celebrate the great achievements for 2019.

P&C are supporting the Kindergarten 2020 orientation on Thursday 14 and 21 November.

We are looking for a few volunteers for the morning of 14 and 21 to help cut up fruit for “Crunch and Sip” and serve morning tea. If you are free, and able to help, please let me know at
heathcotepublicschool@p&caffiliate.org.au.

If you have any questions or agenda items for our last meeting please contact the P&C on the above email address.
