Staffing Developments

There have been significant recent developments in the staffing arrangements at our school.  After four years teaching Technology and VCAL classes, Mr Phil Collier has resigned from his position and will not be returning to Nhill College.  To replace Mr Collier, I am very pleased to announce that Mr Wayne Pilgrim will be joining our staff to teach in the Technology and VCAL areas.  Mr Pilgrim is an experienced teacher who has spent a number of years at Rainbow P-12 College.  Because it is not usual for teachers to be appointed at this time of year, Mr Pilgrim will share his time between Nhill College and Rainbow P-12 until the end of Term 1.  He will start his first day with us on Friday 8th March, and will work here each Monday, Wednesday and Friday before coming on board full time from the start of Term 2.  The school's timetable has had to be changed to accommodate this new development so that all Technology classes could be held on the days that Mr Pilgrim will be available.  These changes will come into effect next Friday, 8th March and will mainly impact students in Years 7 to 10.  Primary timetables will remain unchanged.  Parents and students will be able to access this new timetable through Compass.  Mr Cunningham has kindly agreed to help out in the VCAL classroom until Mr Pilgrim is able to take up his full allotment.  I would like to thank Mrs Coughlan, Mr Cunningham and all of our VCAL teachers who have pitched in to cover the absence of Mr Collier in recent weeks, and I look forward to welcoming Mr Pilgrim to our school next Friday.

LiteracyPlanet

As part of a commitment to providing high quality literacy education, students in Years 3 to 6 now have a subscription to LiteracyPlanet - a fun and engaging online learning resource.  LiteracyPlanet is designed by educators to support the curriculum and the comprehensive development of key literacy skills.  Suitable for children of all abilities, it features thousands of exercises to cover pre-reading, reading, phonics, sight words, comprehension, spelling, vocabulary, grammar and punctuation.  Classroom teachers of students in Years 3 to 6 will be providing students with their individual login details soon.  Children can access their LiteracyPlanet account on any internet connected computer or tablet device.  Feel free to encourage your child's use of LiteracyPlanet at home to support their learning at school.

Family Details Information

Last week all families were sent an envelope containing a hard copy of their family details information.  Each year the school is required to check this information to make sure that family details are recorded correctly on our system.  If there are any changes, errors or omissions to your details, please take the time to make the necessary corrections, sign the form and return it to school as soon as possible.

It's Not Ok To Be Away

Attendance is an important aspect of schooling at Nhill College. If you are not attending school it makes it difficult to learn. Class attendance will be celebrated each week, with classes being recognised for the best attendance in both primary and secondary classes. Last week’s class awards went to Yr 3 McDonald and 10Y . These classes will be going into the draw for a chance to win pizza for lunch at the end of the term.

Primary Hockey Clinics

On Thursday our Year 1-6 students were able to participate in some hockey clinics organised through Hockey Victoria. Thanks to Rickie Chequer who volunteered to help out. If your child would like to become involved with hockey, there are certainly local opportunities by contacting the Nhill and District Sporting Club or Yanac Hockey Club.

Year 1/2 Camp

As part of the Nhill College Camps Program, we plan to conduct the Year One/Two sleepover at the College on Thursday 28th March; the second last week of term 1. Students will attend school as normal on Thursday and begin camp activities at 3.30pm. The students will be doing some fun activities and sleeping overnight in tents in the college stadium. Parents please place this date on your calendars. A note has been sent home today.

LAUNCH OF THE 2019 MATES MENTOR PROGRAM

On Friday 15th February 2019, Nhill College launched the 2019 MATES Mentor Program.  What seemed to be a simple True or False Trivia Quiz became more a guess on some questions.  It was wonderful to welcome the students and their families to meet their mentors for the first time and set a time for their first official catch up.

Five students are currently involved in the program.  Each student is matched with a volunteer from the local community.  The mentors will meet each fortnight to spend 1 hour together with their allocated student during the school day.   The Mates and their Mentors will decide together what they would like to do each fortnight, some may play games, do craft, walk and talk, learn new skills.  In some cases, the student may well teach their mentor something new.

The program has had great success in the past, with students who participate in the program reporting an increase in their confidence, feeling happier at school, having a better attitude towards school, attending school more often and generally feeling better about themselves.

If you would like to be a mentor and offer 1 hour per fortnight to spend time one-on-one with a student, please contact Kim Magrath for further information or an application form.

Student Absences

Regular attendance at school is extremely important to the social and academic development of all children.  It is a Department requirement that parents contact the school each day their child is absent.  Any unauthorised absences currently trigger an SMS via Compass at 9.45am each morning to notify parents that their child is not at school.  If a parent receives such an SMS, it is requested that they contact the school as soon as possible to provide a reason for their child’s absence.  This can be done by entering an explanation directly onto Compass via the app installed on your phone, or by calling the College on 53912111.  (Please note that the Skoolbag app is no longer being used by the school to communicate messages.)  In an effort to further reduce the rate of unauthorised absences being recorded at Nhill College, office staff will follow up with a phone call if a response to the SMS has not been received by 10.45am on the day of each absence.

REMINDER **Annual Action Management Plans for Allergies, Anaphylaxis and Asthma for 2019

If your child has any of the above medical conditions it is a requirement that you provide the school with an updated Management Plan each year.  Management plans need to be signed by the child's medical practitioner or specialist and a recent photo of the child attached to the plan before being provided to the school.

We would appreciate parents assistance in this area so we can follow your childs action plan if to ensure the most up to date treatment is provided should the need arise.

Work Experience Information

YEAR 10 AND 11 WORK EXPERIENCE DATES 2019

All students in Years 10 and 11 are advised that they will be required to participate in the Nhill College Work Experience programs during the following dates:

Year 11:  First week of Term 3 - 15th - 19th July (Melbourne Trip students will depart Nhill Sunday 14th July)

Year 10:  Final week of Term 3 - 16th to 20th September

Year 11 students should be well and truly working on obtaining a placement, particularly those interested in high demand industries or placements situated in larger cities.  Students wishing to attend the Melbourne Trip must return their permission slip with $100 deposit by 8th March.  This deposit is a commitment to attend the trip, as accommodation bookings and final costings will depend on numbers of students who pay this deposit.

Year 10 students should also be thinking about a suitable placement, and are encouraged to come and talk to Mrs Sampson about their ideas.  Placements fill up quickly, it is highly recommended to plan early to avoid disappointment.

VICTORIA POLICE WORK EXPERIENCE 2019

All students in Years 10 and 11 are advised that the Victoria Police Work Experience applications will open on the 11th February.  Any students with a strong interest in a career within Victoria Police are encouraged to see Mrs Sampson and submit a letter outlining an expression of interest as soon as possible, with the final due date being 8th March.   If multiple students apply Mrs Sampson and the leadership team will process the applications to select the most suitable student to put forward to Victoria Police for consideration.  Each school can only submit one application to Victoria Police, and this does not guarantee a placement.  Victoria Police will notify schools of the outcome by Monday 29th April.

BYODs

A list of latest model computers available from Nhill Bi-Rite and Wimmera Office Equipment has been included in this week’s newsletter for the consideration of families interested in a BYOD.  These lists contain a range of devices that will be able to support student learning – at home and at school – over the next few years.  A reminder that all students have free access to Microsoft Office, as well as some Adobe programs through their school subscription.  For families considering a BYOD, it is worth noting that electronic resources are being used more and more frequently in classes, with the College subsidising Edrolo subscriptions for all VCE students, while Maths Pathways and Education Perfect resources are also being used more extensively across Years 7-10 this year.  If you have any questions related to the College’s BYOD program, feel free to contact Mr Shrive.   The BYOD product lists can be downloaded from the link below, as well as being available from the College website.  Printed copies can be obtained from Mr Shrive on request.

2019 Compass and Skoolbag

From 2019 Nhill College will no longer be using the SkoolBag app. This means all notifications and absent notes will happen within Compass.  We encourage parents to logon to Compass to approve any absences your child may have, or to lodge an absence in advance if the dates and times are known.  The following is a reminder from the Compass FAQ Sheet that went home with all students last year.  The FAQ Sheet can also be found on our website.

How do I submit an absence note?

If using a computer, go to https://nhillcollege-vic.compass.education/ then view the student’s profile, select “Attendance” and then go to “Notes/Approvals”.  Click on “Add Attendance Note” to submit a note via Compass.

If you are using the app, go to the student’s profile, “Approvals” tab, and then click the plus button to add a note.  You can submit notes ahead of time if you know your child will be absent in the future.

From 2019 parents will be able to complete bus notes on our website at http://www.nhillcollege.vic.edu.au/.  This will not require the app to access.  Alternatively, parents will be able to ring the College or email nhill.co@edumail.vic.gov.au

Community Notices

Cultural Diversity Week

Hindmarsh Shire Council and West Wimmera Health Services are working together to celebrate Cultural Diversity Week in 2019. To be held from 16 to 24 March 2019, the theme for this year is ‘Proud to Belong - Your Story, Your Generation’.

As a way of celebrating multiculturalism and diversity, we extend an invitation to members of the community to share your story on multicultural heritage and identity.

This program will be delivered in a similar method to the highly successful and well received ‘Faces of Hindmarsh’ project.

Cultural Diversity Week is a fantastic way to celebrate the everyday diversity of Victorians and reflect on what gives us all a sense of belonging in our multicultural community. At least 29 different nationalities currently reside in Hindmarsh Shire, within Victoria almost half of Victorians were either born overseas or have at least one parent who was born overseas.

If you, or someone you know would like to share their story please contact Michelle Farinha, Community Development Officer at community@hindmarsh.vic.gov.au  or 5391 4444 prior to Sunday 3 March 2019.
