June 9, 2022 - Term 2 Week 7

Acknowledgement of Country

From the Principal

Principal's Pen

Dear Parents & Community Members,

Our School Board meeting for this term took place on May 30 in a face-to-face environment for the first time this year.  This gave the Board an opportunity for discussion on a range of topics including;

  • Provision of a 1 to 1 update by Miss Cole and queries around the next steps in the roll out.
  • Sharing of a COVID Impact overview and the effects on our school.
  • Establishment of a timeframe for the delivery of the Parent/Carer Survey
  • Discussion regarding the school’s ability to provide daily notification relating to Attendance
  • Review of the School Board Nomination form.

Last week we were extremely fortunate to have a parent workshop held at our school b the Triple P (Positive Parenting Program) suite of resources; “Fear-Less Parenting”, relating to child anxiety.  The workshop was presented by our School Psychologist, Mrs Sharon Bailey and her colleague Brendan Everett.  The feedback from the presentation was very positive and given the session was over-subscribed, a further session may be conducted later in the year.

Finally, following an unsuccessful football career, many hours in sheep yards being battered by merino rams and a touch of arthritis, I will be undertaking knee surgery next week.  While I am on leave for the balance of this term and early next term, Mrs Rudd will be assuming the Principal’s role and Ms Stephens will be the Associate Principal.

Astronomy Incursion - Djeran Block

Stargazing Recount

On Tuesday, June 7th at 5:30pm, I went to school with Alex for the stargazing incursion.  Everyone in Djeran block came including Astrid.  We all had a picnic dinner in the Assembly Hall.

One of the activities we did was games related to space.  One station people acted out the solar system.  Another activity we had to throw a ball through a small hole in a piece of cardboard – it was very difficult.  Lastly, we put red cellophane on our torches to make them into night lights.

My favourite part of the night was looking through telescopes.  Here’s an interesting fact – Pluto is the biggest dwarf planet.

Wacky Shirt Wednesday

Students and staff had a fun filled day wearing their Wackiest shirt last week on Wednesday, June 1st.

A massive $391.20 was raised to support the Glengarry Primary School 2022 charity, Kids Cancer Support Group.  Thank you for supporting this worthy charity.

Walking With the Wilderness Music Incursion

In Week 5, Thea and Michael from Musica Viva took us on a musical ‘Walk With the Wilderness’. We were delighted by music which represented the ecosystem, such as the relationship between birds, trees, insects and funghi. In Music class, we have been responding to the different ways the music is created, and Indigenous perspectives on music and the natural world.

Wonder Recycling

Room 1 & 2 are helping to keep soft plastics out of the environment and landfill.

Please start saving your bread bags and plastic tags and place your collection into the pink recycling box, outside Room 2 each Friday Morning. The more we collect, the more points we get, to buy play equipment for our school!

Premier’s Reading Challenge

Join the adventure!

We encourage you to join us in unlocking the wonderful world of reading for your children.  Help them to join the Premier’s Reading Challenge.  Will they fly above the clouds, dive into the ocean or jump into a rocket ship?  All students from Kindergarten to Year 10 are challenged to read 12 books by 9 September 2022.

You can help your children sign up via the website, choose their own avatar and log all the books they read over the course of the Challenge.  Weekly prizes will be awarded to students who log a book that week, with major prizes drawn when the challenge ends.

Books don’t have to be in English – children are encouraged to read books in their first language.

There are extraordinary tourism prizes to be won each week.

Sign up your children on the website to begin their magical journey.

For your convenience, attached below is a printable version of the Reading Record.  The record can be dropped into the labeled box in the office when completed.

DoE LINK

As directed by our guidelines, we will ask for your child to be collected if they are displaying cold symptoms such as a cough, runny nose, fever etc.

We have a student at school who is immunocompromised.  This means they can potentially become gravely ill even when contracting a common cold/virus.  Please be mindful of sending students to school when they are unwell, as they may spread their infection.  Please speak with your GP/health professional and see the information in the links above re: advice about keeping your child at home when unwell.

Prospective Foster Carers Needed

The Department of Communities, Child Protection are looking for prospective foster carers.

When a child or young person is taken into care, they need a safe and supportive place to stay. Foster care is often the preferred choice for such children and young people.  Foster Care means a child lives with a different family who aims to provide them with the care and support by offering a safe, secure and nurturing home.

The Joondalup Child Protection Office are holding a foster carer information session on Wednesday, May 18th at 6pm for any prospective carers.

The session will be held at 8 Davidson Terrace, Joondalup.

If you have any questions, are interested in fostering or would like more information; please email Jackie Ireland: Jackie.Ireland@communities.wa.gov.au
