Kambalda West District High School

2020 Issue 4

Term 2, 2020

What an interesting start we have had to the term! There are so many different groups I would like to thank for the incredibly smooth start.

Firstly, I would like to congratulate the children for their resiliency and motivation over the last three weeks. The smiles and chatter is something all the teachers have missed. Children have come back to school excited to learn and happy to see their teachers. Keep a look out tomorrow on Facebook, we will be handing out merit certificates to Face to Face learners as well as At Home Learners.

The next thank you is for the parents who have been so patient dropping their children at the gates. An unexpected bonus of this change is that the children are so settled in and ready for learning in the mornings. Thank you parents for bravely trusting us with your children. We have also noticed how carefully you have been driving at the drop off zone. Thank you.

The At Home Learner parents also need to be congratulated. You have approached the packs with enthusiasm and diligence. We have had some lovely feedback about the packs and the children’s work has been fantastic.  Kimeera Hamon from Year 8 has been cooking up a storm with her family and sent us this picture of the delicious results. Well done.

Lastly, thank you to the staff. Right from the office ladies who have fielded many inquiries and handed out work packs, to the cleaning and grounds staff who have taken on extra responsibilities. Finally, the teachers who have managed the rapid changes in a calm and professional manner.

When we have more news about what the future looks like, I will contact parents. In the meantime, please do not hesitate to call the school if you have questions.

School Health and Hygiene

Extra cleaning time has been allocated throughout the school day to ensure the toilets, playgrounds and frequently touched surfaces are regularly cleaned. There is extra soap and sanitizer in each classroom and hygiene lessons are being conducted. We are working together as a whole school to ensure the safety of all staff and students.

Thank you parents and visitors for adhering to Department of Health guidelines and not entering school grounds unless necessary. A reminder that the staff car park is reserved for work pack pick up. Please continue to make general inquiries over the phone or by email. Thank you for your understanding.

We encourage families to following information from the Department of Health at all times and request you to follow our procedures for notifying us if your child is sick. We offer the following platforms for you to notify us

·         Email kambaldawest.dhs@educaiton.wa.edu.au

Companion Pets

Mr Campbell's class had a very special visit from Roly the companion dog. Pets are a great release of stress and are known to calm people down. The benefits are well documented -

  • maintaining bonds with pets can improve overall health.
  • animal contact has been demonstrated to provide cardiovascular benefits.
  • Pets provide companionship and support, reduce stress and provide a sense of purpose to their human companions.

OLNA - Year 10 English and Maths Test

The OLNA test is an online literacy and numeracy assessment. It is designed to enable students to successfully meet the Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) requirement of demonstrating the minimum standard of literacy and numeracy. Students are working toward a WACE certificate and receive this at the end of Year 12 to prove their literacy and numeracy skills. Students have six tries over Year 10 to 12 to pass OLNA, if they do not achieve Band 8 in their Year 9 NAPLAN.

We were so excited to receive the first round results this week. Our students did so well and have made great gains. 50% passed Maths and Reading and 30% passed writing. Congratulations to these students. We have spoken to individual students and have helped them to set a plan and goals to make further achievements.

Reports were mailed to parents who are encouraged to call the school if you have questions.
