Principal's Message

Student Safety

During the design phase, prior to construction, we were able to look critically at our school and how we can increase the safety of students. The school is designed around 3 zones within the school - public, privileged and private.

Public zones are areas such as the administration foyer, where the general public can access at any time. Privileged zones, like the hall and classrooms, are areas where we invite community in at certain times or events.

This model allowed us to then carefully locate fencing and gates, to keep privileged areas safe from unknown people. In times past, some general public had used our school as a short cut between Bell St to Main Rd.

As of this week, we are now locking all gates during school hours, except for public access to our Admin. Shortly after 9am each morning, Main Rd gate will be locked.

Main Rd entrance is still accessible before and after school hours, however, it is crucial that if your child is arriving late to school they are entering via the Bell St entrance. Students arriving late were already required to be signed in by a parent at Admin.

New Position for 2021

With our growth over the last few years, our school population has grown and held to a point where we have become entitled to another Assistant Principal (three in total). We will be entering into the process to fulfil this role for the start of 2021. An announcement should be made before the end of the year.

Kinder 2021 and Vippets

Sadly we had to cancel our information session for Kinder 2021 earlier this term. To overcome that we are releasing a series of videos to share information, build familiarity and showcase the school. These video snippets (we’re calling them Vippets) will be released over our Facebook page and YouTube channel.

Rather than one big video, we’ll have little vippets on different topics, like library, day to day routines, Kiss 'n' Ride zone etc. This will allow both parents and future students to watch short episodes to get the most relevant information at the time.

Kinder Orientation

We are eagerly waiting for the Term 4 guidelines before we can lock in our plans around Kinder orientation. We have developed a “Plan A”, a “Plan B” and “Plan What Do We Do Now?” (Just joking on the last!)

Plan A has us starting orientation later in Term 4, from the 6th November and running for 5 weeks. Plan B will be based around smaller groups and shorter sessions. Once we have the guidelines released, we’ll be locking in our plans and getting the information out. We are very determined to make orientation happen.

While teacher deployment has not been made for next year as yet, we have placed Mrs Moris on Kinder for 2021 and she is currently leading Kinder orientation. If you have further questions for Kinder 2021, Mrs Moris is the go-to person.

Wrapping Up Term 3

We are coming to the close of Term 3, with some great activities to finish the term, including our Cross Country Carnival and PBL reward day. There is no staff development day at the beginning of Term 4, so all students return on Monday 12th October.

Have a great holidays.

Childrens University 2020

That’s a wrap for Children’s University 2020! This year was very different to any other but our CU students went above and beyond to engage in learning beyond the classroom, whether it was online, through virtual tours or out in the community. A huge congratulations to all of our CU students!

Tuesday 23rd September is the final day for students to bring their passports in to be stamped and their hours to be tallied. Any activities that are completed after this date will then count towards 2021. The hours students have achieved this year will be forwarded on to the University of Newcastle where they will begin to prepare for our graduation ceremony. Unfortunately, graduation will not go ahead in the same capacity as previous years but it will happen in some form, with more details to be provided in Term 4.

Thank you to our wonderful CU students and families who have made the most of this wonderful program this year. We look forward to continuing this learning journey with you once again next year and also welcoming new students. Information on how to join the Children’s University fun is made available at the beginning of each school year.

Week 9 Fun!!!!

Smiling Minds

Across the school we have implemented the Smiling Minds mindfulness program into our daily learning routines. Mindfulness is a well-established and researched technique for achieving calmness and improved wellbeing. It provides students with mindfulness techniques to enable them to focus on the present moment, reflect and communicate how they are feeling. Teachers and students are noticing the benefits of this practice in our classrooms. Attached is a guide for parents and carers to provide you with further information. A free app is available to download to use Smiling Minds. See attached flyer.

Book Week 2020

Book parade will be on again this year, however, due to Covid it will look a little different.   A note with further details will be sent home.

We are asking students (parents/community) to come dressed up on Friday 23 October in the theme of Curious Creatures Wild Minds.

Head Lice

We've had some cases of head lice reported to the school.

Could you please check your child's hair for head lice tonight.

If you find any eggs or lice, please commence treatment as recommended.

Further information on head lice is available on the NSW Health website https://www.health.nsw.gov.au/environment/headlice/Pages/default.aspx or through the Department of Educations website https://education.nsw.gov.au/parents-and-carers/wellbeing/health-and-safety/removing-head-lice-and-nits

We appreciate your assistance in this regard.

Don't forget your water bottle

A reminder that our bubblers are not being used at the moment in line with COVID-19 restrictions.

Students are reminded to please bring a water bottle to school.

Library News

CLASS BORROWING

There will be no borrowing in week 10 due to the school holidays.  Could you please return all outstanding library books. Thank you.

BOOK CLUB

We have been able to buy $165 worth of new books for the library thanks to your book club purchases.  From every purchase you make, 20% comes back to the school.

Parents and Citizens Update

Hello SPPS families,

A big thank you to all those families who have submitted a recipe to our school cookbook fundraiser.  We even have a submission from one of our school classes as a joint project.

At our last P&C meeting we decided to leave submissions open until the end of the term so you still have time to submit your child's recipe before it goes to publishing.  You can do this either by emailing sppsvicepres@gmail.com or by dropping off at the school office. You can include a drawing or photos of you making the recipe or the final yummy product if you like. We cannot wait to see what else our Speers Point families submit.

SPPS P&C Meeting

Our last P&C meeting was an exciting one.  It covered so many things, we heard about what's happening in the school next term and next year. Plus the new grants project to install a brand new and innovative vegetable garden to our school. Thank you to those people who responded to our call out for help in relation to the grant. You have done some amazing work.

We also voted on the first upgrade to our canteen with the installation of a brand new oven and electrical works.  As well as helping the school install some next generation, advanced PBL signage.

Our next meeting will be held on Monday 12 October 2020 via Zoom.

If you would like to submit a question or an agenda item please email our secretary Kat at speerspointpublicschool@pandcaffiliate.org.au

Canteen News

BREAKING NEWS!

Canteen will finally reopen Wednesday of Week 1, Term 4.

The Canteen roster is up and running! If you would like to volunteer for a day you can email our canteen supervisor Elisha at speerspointcanteen@gmail.com, or sign up directly at https://signup.com/go/UwEctNq

Last Friday we had a small working bee to move out our fridges and freezers in anticipation of the new oven installation and electrical works. It's been a long time coming and we are very excited to see the improvements to the canteen.
