2022 Term 1 Issue 3

From the Principal

Dear families & friends,

We are nearly at the end of what has been a very disruptive term. As always I am so impressed with the our community pulls together and, as I write this from home while I isolate myself and family, so grateful to have a team of staff who will always step in and up when needed. We are so very lucky to have the team and community we have.

Our last week of term next week is a short week as we start our holidays with the Easter long weekend. Staff and students are putting a Padlet together capturing some of the terms learning. While there has been lots of coming and going of students and staff, we have been able to continue a quality learning program for our students even if it is not exactly how we first had planned it!

Term 2 will begin on Monday 2nd of May and teachers are currently working on plans for the term and reflecting on what we have learnt about how teaching and learning looks in our current climate with the impacts of covid isolations and absences.

Be sure to check other term 2 important dates later in the newsletter.

Staff news

We welcome back on board with us next term Kamal Poudel running our Physical Education and health program and Camille Jenkinson in our Visual Arts position, I know students have been very excited to see them around the school the last week or so visiting and helping out and we look forward to having them back on our team.

I would like to thank Lucy Cushway who stepped into a very challenging role of teaching the PE & Visual Arts program for the term while Kamal and Camille were on leave. Lucy quickly established herself in the team and developed lovely relationships with the students. I know we will all be sad to lose her but hopefully we will see her back for relief work and other positions that may arise in the future.

We also very sadly say goodbye to Maddi Olson, one of our talented SSOs. Maddi has been part of our team for a little over two years and has certainly established very strong relationships with everyone. We will miss her dedication and commitment to children, her warm, friendly and positive energy and her IT skills!! Maddi has won a full time position as an assistant project manager with SACID (South Australian Council for Intellectual Disability), which is a position more in line with her university qualifications. We wish her all the best for her future career and know she will be successful in anything she takes on.

We wish everyone a safe holiday and hope you all make some enjoyable memories with your families and friends.

Cheers Skye 😊

Harmony Day

On Friday 25th March, we celebrated Harmony Day! Jaxon welcomed us with a lovely Kaurna welcome once we were all outside. Classes were able to show their traditional and cultural clothing, and had the opportunity  to share where their family is from. It was so wonderful to see all the wonderful cultures that make up our community. Students then got to join in on a story time before heading back to class for a performance from Estheera - a dance from her culture - and sharing presentations and cultural artifacts. What a lovely way to celebrate Harmony Day!

Happy Easter & School Holidays!

REMINDER

Term 1 finishes on 14th April (Thursday) with an early finish at 2:10pm.

Term 2 begins on 2nd May (Monday).

We hope you enjoy the Easter break and Holidays!!

Playtime Fun!

Primary

News from Primary 2!

During figurative language we learnt about onomatopoeia. Onomatopoeia describes the sound of a noun.  We made posters on one page which had to include a word and imagery to describe what that word would sound like. - Estheera

Hi from Primary 1!

BEE PROJECT

Lauren’s group of year 3 and year 4 students have been working with Kelly and Lauren twice a week on their Bee Projects.

Kelly applied and has been given a grant for a bee garden to be put in the forest area.

The students have been researching different bee species including; Homalictus Bees, Resin Bees, Reed Bees, Teddy Bear Bees, European Honey Bees, Leaf Cutter Bees, Blue Banded Bees, Masked Bees and Green Carpenter Bees.

We will use our research to understand what we need to do to create the best environment for the native bees in our area.

Juniors

Nicole's 1/2s!

This term the text type we have been looking at is procedural texts.  Procedural texts tell us how to make or do things such as bake a cake, play a game, conduct an experiment, make a paper aeroplane or put together furniture.  Today for our English lesson, we followed a procedure to learn how to make fairy bread.  Then when Lucy joined us in our room, we followed a procedure to learn how to make a kite.  During inquiry lessons, we have also been following procedures to conduct experiments on forces in air, water and along the ground.

Resource Hub

Dear Felixstow Students and Families

It has continued to be another busy few weeks, with Harmony Day, Scholastic Book Club (Issue2) and culminating with the Bunnings ‘Sausage Sizzle’ BBQ last Sunday.

Bunnings BBQ ‘Sausage Sizzle’ Fundraiser

Another successful Bunnings BBQ Fundraiser was held at  Windsor Gardens on Sunday 27th March. At the centre of this success was you, the Felixstow school community who came together to support this event in various ways. I would especially like to give my thanks to Felicity (Beatrice & Violet’s mum), Tom (Jai & Louie’s dad), Amedeo (India’s dad), Phil (Dylan’s dad), Lucy (Nora & Maggie’s mum) plus Nicole, Laura and Laura’s partner Steve who volunteered not only their time but their energy to work at the BBQ under relentless pressure to serve multitudes of people for most of the day. Secondly, I would like to give thanks to those who donated money or items towards the BBQ; Kerryn (Aiden’s mum) Staycee (Charlotte’s mum), Savia & Vinod (Zoe J & Xavi’s parents), Eketerina (Slava’s mum), Laura & Peter  (Anastasia’s parents) and Amedo & Vanusca (India’s parents) plus Gillian and Di.  Finally, I would like to thank those students & families who came along and said hi and bought a sausage or two.

On the day, we used 38kg of sausages, 30 loaves of bread, 8kg of onion and ran out of cans of coke and solo.

We made a magnificent profit of $1300 which is $200 more than last year. This money will go towards the purchase of more furniture for the Resource Hub to make it an even more inviting and comfortable place for our students to read, gain knowledge and inspire their imagination and creativity.

Bunnings Painting Competition

Ten students were randomly chosen from across the school to participate in the Bunnings Windsor Gardens painting competition. Over the past few days they have spent their break times creating a picture on their own or in pairs, with the only requirement being that it is somehow related to Bunnings. The students showed dedication in giving up their playtime and creativity in designing their pictures. These have now been taken to the store to be displayed to the public, who will then vote for their favourite on Saturday. The winner will receive a cash prize for themselves and money to donate to a charity of their choice.  Good luck to all the students who entered – come what may you are already winners!

Book Star of the Month is Louie Beck (Nicole’s class) for his drawings taken from the Diary of a Wimpy Kid. I invite other students to follow Louie’s great example to become the next Book Super Star by either creating their own illustration from a book, a poster or write a book review and give to Kelly.

Resource Hub Opening Time

As of this Friday at first break, the Resource Hub will be opening its doors for 6 students to enter and spend their time reading a book of choice, drawing/colouring in, playing board games or having some mindful relaxation. Students will also have the opportunity to return and borrow books. To be eligible to enter, students are required to fill in a weekly booking form located in the Resource Hub.

Help Needed!

Volunteers are still required to help with the covering of new books. So, if you have the time and would like to help please let me or Gillian know.

If you have any questions or are able to help in anyway, please don’t hesitate to contact me at; kelly.hunterwright778@schools.sa.edu.au

Kind regards

Kelly
