Principal's Message

Dear Parents and Carers,

Please join us this Wednesday evening at 6:30pm in the Library where we will be sharing information on the New K-2 Curriculum. Thank you Ms Casey, Ms. Dayhew and Ms. Flarey for sharing your expertise with the community.

NAPLAN

This year there have been some changes to the upcoming National Assessment Program- Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN). Students in years 3 and 5 will complete the assessments from Wednesday 15 March to Monday 27 March. Results will also show student achievement against proficiency rather than bands. Information was sent to parents with children in years 3 and 5 earlier this week.

School Contributions and Fees

Accounts for the above were emailed this week.  We thank you in advance for payment. Parents who are unable to meet these payments should contact me, or Rebecca See. All enquiries are confidential.

Extra-Curricular Opportunities

We are very fortunate at Normanhurst Public School to have such a broad range of extra-curricular opportunities on offer in academic, sporting, creative and performing arts and leadership areas. We are able to offer such opportunities due to the generosity and commitment of our teachers who devote their break times and their personal time to run auditions / selections, rehearse with and coach groups, attend performances and events and complete the considerable administrative tasks that many of these roles also entail. Ideally, we can have as many students as possible involved in extra-curricular programs. However, some activities require a selection process to take place as we are often limited by student:teacher ratios and restrictions placed on us by organisations running competitions and events, where the total number of students who can perform or participate is limited by the organisers. Unfortunately this means in some cases students who attend trials / selections do miss out. Whilst missing out can be very disappointing for some children; modelling resilience and helping them recognise that feeling sad or disappointed at times is a normal human experience, as well as encouraging them to continue to look for other opportunities when they arise, can make a big difference.

Valuables and mobile phones / Smartwatches at school

Please be reminded that whilst students may bring items to school for use during playtime, we prefer that items of value are not brought. The school is not able to take responsibility for such items if they are lost or damaged. School and Department of Education policies also do not allow for the use of mobile phones by students during school hours. This extends to using Smartwatches to receive text messages or calls. Students who bring mobile phones to school should leave them turned off or on silent mode in their school bags during the day. Students wearing Smartwatches should put them into aeroplane mode or have the text message / call capacity disabled during the school day. Please be aware that students bring mobile phones / wear Smartwatches to school at their own risk and the school does not have responsibility for loss or damage to them.

Meet the Teacher

Thank you to all of the families who attended the Meet the Teacher evening last week. It's lovely to be able to welcome you back into the school after the past few years where we had restrictions.

Swimming Carnival

We are currently organising our 2023 Swimming Carnival which will be held on 23 February 2023 at Hornsby Aquatic and Leisure Centre.  Parents are welcome to attend.

Sports in School Program (SISA)

Every class each week has one hour of sport with specialist teachers. They are learning a range of skills including ball skills, gymnastics and athletics skills. The SISA program is run every Friday. The company arrives each morning with a truck full of different sports equipment which provides great challenges and lots of fun for our students. The sports teachers are qualified DOE-approved teachers. Staff use this time to participate in stage professional learning and collaborative planning.

P&C Meeting

Our first P&C Meeting was held last Monday 13 February. We are all looking forward to the Welcome Festival on Friday evening March 10.

Have a good week.

Warm regards,

Jacqui Gordon

EOI High School Placement Information

Dear parents/carers of Year 6 students

To enrol your child in Year 7 for 2024, you will need to complete an Expression of Interest for Year 6 to Year 7 transition. The Expression of Interest (EOI) lets you indicate which school(s) you would like your child to attend in Year 7.

The Expression of Interest and Placement not required will be available on the enrolment pages (see link below) from March 6 – March 31. You will not be able to access the online EOI until March 6. After you submit an EOI and it has been assessed, your child will be offered a place at a high school.

Please use the following link to our enrolment page to complete the online EOI

https://year7.enrol.education.nsw.gov.au/?schoolCode=2760

If your child will not be attending a NSW Government high school next year, please let us know by completing a Placement Not Required form.

If you are unsure whether they will be attending a NSW Government school (you’ve applied for a private school, or you are moving interstate), we ask that you still complete an EOI and follow up with your school once a decision has been made.

The online process will guide you through your options and collect the information required to make the process as smooth as possible. The Expression of Interest and Placement not required will be available on the enrolment pages (see link below) from March 6 – March 31.

For parents/carers who are not able to complete an application online, a paper EOI form can be collected from the school office.

For more information about moving to high school, visit High school enrolment.

Should you have any questions regarding the Online EOI form, please contact me.

Kind regards,

Jacqui Gordon
Principal

Library Matters

Library Monitors 2023

A very big thank you to the following Year 6 students for volunteering their time to become library monitors this year. Congratulations to: April A., William B., Jenson C., Zoey F., Avni G., Paige J., Emmanuel P., Oliver R., Maria S.

NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge 2023

The NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge is not a competition but a challenge to each student to read, to read more and to read more widely. The challenge aims to encourage a love of reading and to experience quality literature. This year’s challenge opens on Monday 27 February 2023 and closes on Friday 18 August 2023 for all K-6 students.

To complete the challenge, students in Kindergarten – Year 2 need to experience thirty books At least twenty of these books must be from the K-2 PRC Booklist. The other ten can be free choice. Students experience the books by either reading independently, sharing the reading of a book, or having a book read to them. Students in KD, KE, KT, 1W, 1/2N, 2F & 2P will be completing the Reading Challenge with their class teacher.  However, if you wish to complete the reading challenge with your child at home, please go ahead as your child will have the valuable experience of enjoying and sharing twice as many books (please note they will only receive one certificate). If your child can read simple chapter books on their own, they can attempt the 3-4 Challenge. To do this, students will need to change their student reading record to challenge level 3-4 on the https://online.det.nsw.edu.au/prc/home.html and complete their own online reading record.

Students in Years 3-6 are to read twenty books independently to complete the Reading Challenge. At least ten of these must be on the Year 3-4 or Year 5-6 PRC Booklist. The other ten can be free choice. Students are limited to five books from a series to encourage them to experience a wide range of books and authors. All 3-6 students participating in the Reading Challenge will need to logon to the NSW Premier’s Challenge website https://online.det.nsw.edu.au/prc/home.html  using their school username and password and enter their own books on their online reading record.

Students who complete the NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge will receive a certificate at the end of the year.

Booklists and further information about the Reading Challenge can be located on The NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge website: https://online.det.nsw.edu.au/prc/home.html
For further assistance you may contact me in the library on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday.

Good luck with the challenge and happy reading!

Writing Club

If your child loves writing and sharing stories, we would love for them come to our new Writing Club on Mondays at lunch! Writing Club is open to all students in Years 1 – 6 who have an interest in creating stories, scripts and/or poetry. Its aim is to provide a collaborative space for students to write, share ideas, share stories and give each other feedback. In Writing Club, Mrs Dougall and I, will be encouraging and assisting students with their creative writing and we will be working towards publishing a school magazine of student works at the end of the year.

Makerspace

Every Thursday, at lunchtime in the library, Mrs Smith and I will be running ‘Makerspace’ for different stages throughout the year. This term, Stage 2 (Years 3 & 4) will have the opportunity to collaborate, create, explore and make things in a hands-on fun environment.

Library Borrowing

Each class has a set time each week where they will visit the library to borrow and return books. Please ensure your child brings their library bag on their library day.

Monday: 2F, 2P, 3S, 3L

Tuesday: 6H, 6P, 5F, 5H

Wednesday: KE, 3/4T, 4M

Thursday: KD, KT, 4K, 1W, 1/2N

Students may also visit the library before school to borrow and return books.

Books may be borrowed for a period of two weeks. Please return books promptly or renew them regularly to avoid them becoming lost. Currently, many students across the school have not returned books from last year. Please look for these and return them as soon as possible please.

Students are responsible for the books they borrow and we trust that the books will be looked after whilst in the care of students. We recommend keeping your books in a safe, designated spot in your house. If books are lost or damaged beyond repair, we do ask for them to be paid for so they can be replaced. We appreciate your support and if a borrowed item has been lost or damaged, please contact Mrs Spender via the school office or send a note via your child.

New Books to Enjoy!

Look out for these new books which have recently been added to our school library collection!

To discover more new books, log on to your child’s NSW DOE Student Portal to view the school library’s catalogue.

Ethics classes at Normanhurst Public School

Dear Parents and Carers,

Could you be an ethics teacher for NPS?

We are seeking volunteers so that we can provide ethics classes for all the families who have requested it for their children.

Ethics teachers receive full training by Primary Ethics, the not-for-profit organisation approved to design curriculum and training for the ethics program. Training consists of a two day workshop and short online modules. Lesson materials are provided. Suitable volunteers have an interest in children’s education and development of critical thinking skills and must be available at lunchtime on Wednesdays each week.

In ethics classes, children learn how to think logically, disagree respectfully and support their arguments with evidence, rather than act according to blind habit or peer pressure.

Children discuss topic such as:

-imagining how others feel

-how do we treat living things?

-what is laziness?

-how do we disagree in a respectful way?

-fairness

If you are looking for an opportunity to make a valuable contribution to our school, please visit www.primaryethics.com.au and/or contact the current ethics coordinator Chris Mansfield (0402813874)
