Respect, Responsibility, Safety

Principal's Message

When  reflecting  on Term 2, it is  hard to remember exactly what was happening last week let alone what has been happening throughout the term.
School education has been interrupted, its been remote, its returned to classrooms, but nothing about Term 2 has been 'normal' and the only thing certain about Term 3, is that whatever becomes normal - has yet to emerge.
Thanks to everyone in our school community who has played their part in supporting either students, staff and other carers. It's been a 'tough' six months and I hope the two week school break provides opportunities for us all to appreciate both the important people in our lives and the moments that helps sustain who we are.

Wellbeing Update

As we come to the end of a challenging term we would like to remind you all to take time to look after yourselves over the holidays. Our emotions can come in waves, and impact us at different times, which is normal and expected. Let’s continue to take care of each other and ourselves especially if we are feeling distressed or worried. This might mean talking to family and friends about the way we are feeling or any concerns you may have about someone else. It might also be about spending quality time together, sharing stories, and being open and honest if you don’t think you’re doing ok.

While talking to friends and families is a great place to start, there are also some other resources you can draw on to find help and advice, including: e-headspace, Kidshelpline, and ReachOut.

Wellbeing and Health In Reach Coordinator

Our Wellbeing and Health In Reach Coordinator is often referred to as the WHIN.

The WHIN is a registered nurse who provides a range of health supports to children, young people and their families. The WHIN is employed by NSW Health and will assess and identify children and young people's health needs and coordinate access to relevant services.

The WHIN works with the Learning and Wellbeing team at each school, this team may identify that a referral to the WHIN would be helpful.

Each primary school can provide you with a WHIN intake referral form. Secondary students can self-refer to the WHIN.

Mrs Caitlin Larter is the WHIN at Tumut High School and can be contacted on 0436 605 371 or email caitlin.larter@health.nsw.gov.au.

Mrs Larter is available Monday to Friday including school holidays.

Tips for our Senior Students

Years 11 and 12 can be stressful, and the situation with COVID-19  has only added to the uncertainty and challenges of senior studies. It is important to have some strategies to manage emotions to re-focus our thinking and look after ourselves.

Please read the attached for great tips on how to deal with changes and challenges.

Premiers Sporting Challenge

The Premiers Sporting Challenge (PSC) is designed for students to work together in a team with the shared goal of increasing physical activity levels. It is a great opportunity for active students to be role models for their peers, where students can encourage each other to increase their activity levels as a collective.
All Year 7-10 students have received at school, information including registration details to participate in the challenge.

We encourage our students to keep up with the physical activity during school holidays and remember to record any physical activity.

Student Stories and Student Success

Year 7

Mandatory Technology Visual Arts (MTVA) is a popular program at Tumut High for Year 7 and 8 students.

Students are experiencing new subjects and building new relationships with their peers in these sessions.

The Ag Farm is a popular destination for students to be learning in the outdoors and students love getting their hands dirty in Visual Art lessons.

Year 8

Year 8 Drama students have been sharing new experiences during their lessons learning about and exploring storytelling through shadow puppetry.

Year 9

Year 9 Robotics students are enhancing their engineering and robotic skills for 21st century manufacturing careers. They are enjoying designing and constructing working models using the 3D printer and laser cutter programmed via computer graphics (CAD) Autodesk Inventor. The students really enjoy the hands on engineering - problem solving- and robotics experiences.

Year 9 and 10

Students from Year 9 & 10 Elective Music classes performed for the canteen crowd last Thursday & Friday at Recess. The crowd really enjoyed the live music & many sang along to the choruses. It has been a frustrating time for musicians, unable to perform at live venues in the community and with no CAPA concert this term. Having the opportunity to perform for friends in a relaxed setting at school was heaps of fun. There are more canteen concerts in the pipeline!

"Canteen Concerts"

Year 10

During remote learning students were encouraged to put their thinking caps on and think outside the square to complete "Google Classroom Challenges" created by our teachers.

Students who participated found many hidden talents. This part of learning from home was lots of fun and a great way to still be focused on learning in an environment away from the screen.

"Google Classroom Challenges"

Year 10

Year 10 Science students are currently exploring DNA and genetics as a part of their Changing Genes topic in Mrs Friend's Year 10 Science class.

During this lesson students created a double stranded bracelet which represented the complimentary base pairs seen in all DNA.

Each student's bracelet represented a different organism including human, brown trout, butterfly and flesh eating bacteria.

Year 11

Year 11 Chemistry students are currently exploring acid-base reactions as a part of the Reactive Chemistry Module in Mrs Friend's Year 11 Chemistry class.

During the lesson students performed a number of neutralisation reactions, including making a 'rainbow tower'.

To do this, students mixed universal indicator, sodium carbonate and vinegar in a measuring cylinder of water to create a gradient of colours, from red through to purple, which is caused by a difference in pH as the chemicals reacted.

Students in Science

Year 12

Year 12 Agriculture students have been studying Plant Production. They carried out a practical which showed the effect of sunlight on the plant's ability to make food. By the look on their faces, they enjoyed the photosynthesis prac!

The class was fortunate to have guest speaker Michelle Henry, Researcher from Gundagai Meat Processors visit and talk about Market Price grids and the latest technologies in the meat industry.

Harry Bottero - Rural Youth Ambassador

Congratulations to Year 11 student Harry Bottero who has been accepted to become part of the NSW Rural Youth Ambassadors program for 2020.

Harry will join other young people from across rural NSW in a range of forums and discussions exploring key areas of interest relating to rural life and education, as well as being provided with a range of opportunities to further develop leadership skills with other sensational rural young people.

We look forward to hearing from Harry on his involvement in Term 3.
