TERM 1 WEEK 8 - 13 MARCH 2023

Principal Update

Last week I was asked to answer some questions about my job. I thought I would take the opportunity to share a few of the questions and my responses with you.

1)      What do you do - what does a typical work day/week look like for you?

I am very proud to be a principal in a NSW Public School. Every day looks a little different however a typical day involves connecting with students, staff and community members to ensure that our school community works together to meet every student’s learning needs and to create a wonderful school environment where everyone is welcomed and belongs. I lead teaching and learning, manage school resources and finances, and ensure that school operations are efficient and effective.

2)      How long have you been doing this job and what first sparked your interest in this area?

I always wanted to be a teacher. I started teaching in 2008 and have been fortunate to be in the Principal role since 2020. I absolutely love teaching and being in a classroom with students. Their enthusiasm, curiosity and delight in learning something new makes everyday fun, enjoyable and rewarding. I am passionate about ensuring that there is quality teaching and learning in every classroom. The Principal role provides opportunities to work with the entire school community and collectively create a great teaching and learning environment for every student.

3)      What do you like most about the job?

It matters! Every day I am ensuring that students have the opportunity to learn and grow. Public Education provides opportunities for all students to achieve their best. It is an honor to prepare students for their future and create an environment where they believe there is nothing they can’t achieve.

I feel truly privileged to be the Principal at Moruya Public School and to be a part of such a wonderful school community.

NAPLAN

This week students in Year 3 and Year 5 will begin to complete NAPLAN assessments. Students will complete a writing assessment on Wednesday and a reading assessment on Thursday. Next Week the conventions of language assessment will be completed on Tuesday with the final assessment, numeracy, completed on Wednesday.

NAPLAN assessments provide parents and the school with valuable information about your child’s learning and next steps. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s teacher.

Year 6 to 7 transition

Parents & carers of students transitioning to Year 7 next year are required to express their interest in the High school you wish your child to attend. This process has moved to online this year. The new online application is more time effective and streamlined to be user friendly from your mobile device or computer. We ask that you use the link to access this form. https://year7.enrol.education.nsw.gov.au/?schoolCode=2628

Please note you have 2 options “Apply for Year 7 placement in a NSW Government school” or “Placement not required in a government high school”. Please complete this process by Friday 31 March 2023 as the above link will not work after this date.

If you are unable to access the form or need help completing, please contact the front office and our staff will be happy to help. Alternatively if you would like a paper form sent home with your child, please let the front office know.

P&C AGM

Next Tuesday 21 March the P&C will meet at 3:10 pm. If you are able to please come along and support our school and students.

Deputy Principal

At Moruya Public School we aspire to be safe, respectful learners.  I see evidence of these aspirations throughout the school every day.

Last week the SRC met for the first time.  I was impressed with the courage and respect they demonstrated in using their voice in what will be fortnightly forums.  At this first meeting, ideas for celebrating Harmony Day (21 March) were discussed and some thoughts on renaming the new playground areas were also expressed…..more on this soon.

The Aboriginal Education Committee also recently met.  At the meeting we discussed strategies to increase student attendance, the planning of our new cultural area (including plans for some fabulous totems), the dhurga language program, our Aboriginal Student Voice group as well as our plans for staff training on their understanding of Aboriginal histories and cultures.

The Aboriginal Education Committee meets on the first Wednesday of every month during school term. We extend a warm invitation to the parents and carers of our Aboriginal students to come along to these meetings and join in the discussions.

Our next meeting will be held at 3.15 pm on 5 April.
