Welcome back to all our families and students for the final term of 2020..
The Delany community
I would like to promote the many opportunities students can participate at the school beyond their 8:45am - 3:05pm class commitments. Participation in extra curricular activities benefits the individual and the College community… but it also provides students with extra information to write on a resume when they apply for part-time jobs. It’s a win-win.
For example; students might like to take advantage of:
algebros - after school mathematics support
science club - after school enrichment science investigations
fitness - before and after school opportunities to use the gym
team sport - a variety of arranged sports
bucket drumming - lessons on how to drum individually and as a group
drone flying - learn how to fly and control a drone.
The academic community
Term 4 is not for relaxing and slowing down towards the end of the year. That class of little year 7 students from January 2015 are about to sit the 2020 HSC. This cohort of baby-faces have matured into young adults about to finish their school journey. We wish every student peace, confidence and success through and beyond the HSC examination period which begins next Tuesday and concludes in mid November.
Year 11 students completed their Preliminary program of study and exams at the conclusion of last term, and are now about to embark on their own HSC journey. I spoke to the cohort on Monday morning and urged them to begin strongly. Don’t wait until mid-next year to increase effort, but work consistently and be better prepared for 2021. Parents of these students, I encourage you to work with your children to help them make small plans and goals for this year and build towards bigger goals next year.
Learning is not confined to classrooms, and students in years 7 to 10 will participate in learning activities as we continue our Thursday afternoon sport and activities program. From weightlifting to table tennis to dance, there’s an opportunity for every student to be active and learn skills. In the process, there is important learning about teamwork, competition, respect and resilience. I ask parents to organise their child(ren) to have sunscreen, a hat and a water bottle for sports days - it’s only going to get hotter as we progress towards summer.
The Patrician community
The Patrician community hosted the annual golf day on Friday 9 October. It was indeed a blessing that this event occurred after the COVID-interrupted preparation. Attended by almost 100 people from the Brothers’ communities, schools and supporters, important funds were raised for the Delany Foundation.
Uniform
Students should now be wearing the College summer uniform. The uniform shop is open on Tuesdays throughout the term. Sport uniform is to be worn on Thursdays only for students in years 7 to 10; students in year 11 remain in their summer uniform.
Chewing gum
Chewing gum has a damaging impact at the College. It ends up trampled into the concrete and carpets, pushed under desktops and stuck on shoes and sometimes uniforms. It also has the potential to carry COVID and other viruses - sometimes for days after being discarded.
Gum is strictly prohibited in the College. When a student brings or chews gum to school they will be issued with a $60 fine - this is the cost of having our cleaning contractors remove gum from surfaces in classrooms and yards. Alternatively the student can elect to attend school on a weekend and provide cleaning services.
St Patrick, pray for us.
