Delany College - Granville

Newsletter Term 4 Week 1

Principal's Message

Dear Parents & Caregivers,

Welcome back to Term 4. It was a pleasure to see students returning to school after what was a busy holiday here at the College with extensive cleaning, maintenance and updates to College facilities taking place.

A big thank you to our teachers of our HSC classes that ran workshops for our Year 12 students in preparation for their HSC examinations.

This is a very special time for our Year 12 students an their families. As young women and men, our Year 12 students are coming to the end of 13 years of schooling and there is much to celebrate & reflect on.

We are looking forward to celebrating this journey at graduation after the HSC examinations have been completed & due to the changed

Covid-19 restrictions, we will be able to share this with the students' parents.

Term 4 is also an important time for all students as they need to focus on their learning & participation in College activities.

Year 11 students commence their HSC programs of study and move into the roles of senior leaders of the College.

We congratulate the senior students that have been elected to formal College leadership roles for 2021;

College Captains:

Naomi Habib and Brandon Zaiter

House Leaders:

Campion - Alain Limos

Chisholm - Joel Carder

Mackillop - Chadi Karam

Tierney - Angela Choi

Formation Leaders:

Mira Fahed

Julianne Habib

Bianca Wehbe

Maggie Fahed

We look forward to working with you this term to ensure students can make the most of every opportunity to grow academically and personally. Although this has been a very difficult year and there are many challenges ahead, this is the time to put the building blocks in place for future success.

God Bless

Assistant Principal

Welcome back to all our families and students for the final term of 2020..

The Delany community

I would like to promote the many opportunities students can participate at the school beyond their 8:45am - 3:05pm class commitments. Participation in extra curricular activities benefits the individual and the College community… but it also provides students with extra information to write on a resume when they apply for part-time jobs. It’s a win-win.

For example; students might like to take advantage of:

  • algebros - after school mathematics support

  • science club - after school enrichment science investigations

  • fitness - before and after school opportunities to use the gym

  • team sport - a variety of arranged sports

  • bucket drumming - lessons on how to drum individually and as a group

  • drone flying - learn how to fly and control a drone.

The academic community

Term 4 is not for relaxing and slowing down towards the end of the year.  That class of little year 7 students from January 2015 are about to sit the 2020 HSC. This cohort of baby-faces have matured into young adults about to finish their school journey. We wish every student peace, confidence and success through and beyond the HSC examination period which begins next Tuesday and concludes in mid November.

Year 11 students completed their Preliminary program of study and exams at the conclusion of last term, and are now about to embark on their own HSC journey. I spoke to the cohort on Monday morning and urged them to begin strongly. Don’t wait until mid-next year to increase effort, but work consistently and be better prepared for 2021. Parents of these students, I encourage you to work with your children to help them make small plans and goals for this year and build towards bigger goals next year.

Learning is not confined to classrooms, and students in years 7 to 10 will participate in learning activities as we continue our Thursday afternoon sport and activities program. From weightlifting to table tennis to dance, there’s an opportunity for every student to  be active and learn skills. In the process, there is important learning about teamwork, competition, respect and resilience. I ask parents to organise their child(ren) to have sunscreen, a hat and a water bottle for sports days - it’s only going to get hotter as we progress towards summer.

The Patrician community

The Patrician community hosted the annual golf day on Friday 9 October. It was indeed a blessing that this event occurred after the COVID-interrupted preparation. Attended by almost 100 people from the Brothers’ communities, schools and supporters, important funds were raised for the Delany Foundation.

Uniform

Students should now be wearing the College summer uniform. The uniform shop is open on Tuesdays throughout the term. Sport uniform is to be worn on Thursdays only for students in years 7 to 10; students in year 11 remain in their summer uniform.

Chewing gum

Chewing gum has a damaging impact at the College. It ends up trampled into the concrete and carpets, pushed under desktops and stuck on shoes and sometimes uniforms. It also has the potential to carry COVID and other viruses - sometimes for days after being discarded.

Gum is strictly prohibited in the College. When a student brings or chews gum to school they will be issued with a $60 fine - this is the cost of having our cleaning contractors remove gum from surfaces in classrooms and yards. Alternatively the student can elect to attend school on a weekend and provide cleaning services.

St Patrick, pray for us.

PRAYER TO BEGIN A NEW TERM

Lord, as we prepare for the coming of a new term, make us ready, attentive and available to hear you. Thank You for the gift of being able to rise each day with the assurance that You walk through it with us. Thank You for the gifts of creativity and uniqueness, and the energy to put them to good use. May all that we are today, all that we try to do today, may all our encounters, reflections, even the frustrations and failings all be place in your hands. May the work we do and the way we do it, bring new hope, new life, and courage to all we come in contact with this term. We thank you, Lord. Amen

Hello students, family and friends of Delany College,

As we begin the final term of 2020, we look towards an exciting time for our Church; the season of advent. As we prepare for this liturgical season we prepare our hearts and minds for the coming of Christ whom we invite into our lives daily. In adopting the call of Pope Francis, we look towards those who are isolated and on the margins of society and extend our hand to them in any capacity we are able. As a community, we strive to ensure our students are exposed to opportunities for outreach, prayer and reflection.

This term brings forth many opportunities for our students to engage with social justice outreach and discussion. Each year, during Term 4 students collect items for the Christmas Hampers for Vinnies, an initiative which has been a long tradition at the college. We look forward to having our students involved in this important mission later in the term.In addition to this, members of the Delany Community will also have opportunities to discuss relevant social justice issues in a forum setting one morning a week. Watch this space for more details about the " Fill your cup" initiative over the coming weeks.

Year 11 will soon participate in their Senior Retreat. Whilst this year's retreat will look slightly different, we have complete confidence that it will be a spiritually meaningful experience for our senior students as they embark on their journey towards graduation from high school. Details of the Senior Retreat will be made available to students and their families in the coming weeks.

Year 10 students will continue to trial the Draft New Curriculum in Religious Education as we look towards Stage 5 implementation next year. This new curriculum allows students to engage with topics which are present within their reality and ask questions which spark enquiry into their faith. The learning sequences and assessments have been a priority for the Religious Education department over the past two years and we are excited to implement these learning experiences in the classroom.

Finally, I would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to Mr Bartley and Miss Guillaume who have so ably taken over as acting Religious Education Coordinator ( Curriculum and formation respectively) over the past year. Their hard work and commitment to the students has been a blessing to the Delany community.

I look forward to being back in the Religious Education Coordinator role and being able to connect with our Delany community once again over this term.

God Bless,

Maths Matters

Learning In Focus

The Science club members on the Week 9 of last term had a very interesting activity in making " Elephant Toothpaste" .

It was a fun activity involving the accurate measurement of chemicals, mixing it and observing the reaction. Different concentrations of chemicals were used to increase the rate of reaction.

Students and teachers thorough enjoyed the activity as it had a few surprises in terms of inactive chemicals or not having the reaction start quickly.

Science

Year 11 Investigative Science students did an experiment as part of their lessons on Energy in foods. They burnt pieces of food namely peanuts and chips to identify the amount of energy it contain per gram.

The experiment involved measuring the mass of the food,  burning it to heat 50ml of water and calculating the temperature change.  Students learnt that some food items had a considerable amounts of energy as compared to others.

Special Guest Joel Thompson

On Tuesday 13 October, 2020 Year 12 PDHPE met Manly Sea Eagles Player Joel Thompson. He arrived at the College at 8:30am where he was greeted by the staff, and local representatives from the Cumberland council.

Joel was asked to attend a PDHPE lesson to wrap up the driving question “What makes an athlete great?” for the Option Improving Performance. He spoke about his career in the NRL, before retiring this season to play super league in the UK. The students learnt about his career highlights, how many games he has played, training sessions, pre, during and post performance.

I’d like to give credit to Dan Jackson the owner of PDHPE.NET who provided the school with this program to engage our students using understanding by design.

Afterwards the students participated in a taster NRL clinic that will be run for three weeks during sport for Year 7 to 10 students, here they practised scoring tries, passing, defence and offence.

A huge thank you to Joel Thompson, we wish him the best on his future endeavours and as always we are grateful for our connection with Cumberland Council, specifically, recreation officers Jessica Allison and Rebecca Reynolds.

Updated Health Care Plans & Medical Information

If your child has any type of allergy or Asthma please make sure you have an updated Health Care Plan or Asthma Action Plan from your doctor.

Without this Health Care Plan the school can not provide the appropriate medical treatment should your child become ill. The school updates their Excursion Risk Assessments from the Health Care Plan you provide to the school.

If your child takes medication on a regular basis the school will also need a letter from your local doctor or specialist indicating the medications taken, recommended dosage and time of the day this medication is consumed.

This is to ensure that should your child need to be treated by an ambulance or doctor in an emergency situation, the school can provide the relevant details. Please hand in all Health Care Plans to the Administration office and request that the plan be passed onto Mrs Collimore.
