RICHMOND CHRISTIAN COLLEGE

TIDINGS - Term 3 Week 1 . 2020

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Romantics poet, WB Yeats penned that, “Education is not the filling of a pail but the lighting of a fire,” whilst Malcom X declared that, “Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today.”

At RCC we seek to be able to inspire our children to want to learn more so that they are prepared for what the future holds, because if it is one thing we have become sure of, it is that we cannot guess what their future will look like. It is not just COVID-19 that breeds this uncertainty though; the rate of change in our modern world is exponential and can be intimidating if we do not have a rudder upon which we rely to steady and steer our ship.

If you asked my Poppy George and Nanna Ted if they thought their grandson would live in a world where cars drive themselves without petrol, or many people have these hand-size machines that can give them visual access to friends across the world, even perhaps that they would have friends across the world, I wonder what they would have said?

If you had asked them if they thought that people would become genderless, or the rainbow would no longer be synonymous with the hope of forgiveness and no flood; I wonder what they would say?

The rate at which our world is changing can be incredibly intimidating. It is becoming even more paramount that education does not just fill our students up with knowledge (you need not look past a Google search to see how quickly this becomes outdated), but that it lights a fire for continual learning and the application of that knowledge, a.k.a wisdom.  This becomes their passport to thrive and positively influence tomorrow.

Over the break I was reminded of what a brilliant, distinctive staff we have at RCC. Their commitment to being an amazing team to provide such an education for your children is humbling to be a part of and inspiring to work with.

Every teacher spent time over the break engaging in current and critical professional development to ensure that: their practice continues to provide moments that culturally engage your children though a biblical lens; learning activities are Christ-centred, effective, and cutting-edge to equip your students with the hope and skills necessary for positively impacting their world; and, as a team, we are remaining true to our vision of providing education that collaborates with, supports and creates a community where our families and students feel safe, belong, and become courageous learners.

Just as our students need the proverbial rudder to ensure they can navigate the world around them, so it is critical that RCC staff spend concentrated time focusing on refining our practice to ensure that we stay true to our course and we do not drift from our mission. It is our desire that our core values that illuminate the person of Christ (faithfulness, belonging, service, love and grace) are the motivating factors for our practice.

King Solomon, one of our wisest advisors, says in the book of Proverbs that we should be very careful to train our children in the way they should go, because when they are older they will not depart from this (Prov 22). It is a truth we believe and a responsibility we accept at RCC with great excitement and humility. We treasure the opportunity to have you and your children with us.

It is a privilege to partner with you as we light the fire for life-long learning and instil the foundational principles necessary to steer their ‘ship’ through calm and troubled waters; the only certainty in our children’s future.

Welcome back and Good Tidings,

Jonno

RCC Learning Support

Learning Support at Richmond Christian College purposefully facilitates our goal to ensure each student’s success in their learning journey. The Learning Support Program extends gifted and talented students and provides students with learning difficulties and special needs the opportunity and support to continue to progress in their learning by providing individual and group opportunities, within and outside of the classroom.

Whilst every teacher at RCC ensures that their learning activities, assessments and environment are differentiated to meet individual student’s learning needs, we have a specific Learning Support Program for our students who will benefit from more specific, targeted instruction.

The primary school program focuses on providing identified students the opportunity to receive additional instruction with Learning Support Officers both within, and outside of the classroom. The program makes use of a variety of instructional programs designed to enhance a student’s understanding of foundational literacy and numeracy.

Whilst these opportunities continue into our secondary school, the program expands to include Excellence classes. These programs are designed to extend students who show exceptional aptitude in a variety of intelligences. Excellence classes afford invited students the opportunities to gain wisdom by practicing and applying their knowledge in a service-learning context which creates opportunities of authentic contribution to community.

Should you have any enquires about this program or other opportunities at RCC please do not hesitate to contact our School Office.

COVID-19 Announcement and Reminders

Dear RCC Community,

Thank you so much for your consistent vigilance and care for our community. We appreciate your concern and support during this time.

Please be reminded of the following regarding RCC COVID safe protocols:

Students are to continue to wash their hands before and after play and eating and to use water bottles at school.

Parents are to continue to remain in their cars during pick up and drop-off. If a parent needs to leave their car and enter the school grounds please directly report to the School Office.

Should a student display signs or symptoms of the cold or flu they are to remain at home until these signs are no longer present.

Should a student arrive at school and display signs of cold and flu they will be asked to go to sick bay where they will be assessed. If symptoms such as a fever or a sore throat are present the School Office will call their parent/guardian to collect them.

Should a student have a COVID-19 test they are required to isolate until a negative result is obtained. Please inform the school of this situation should it arise.

Should a student have been to an identified Hotspot, they will be required to quarantine for the mandatory time. Please inform the school of this situation and we will be sure to provide your student with the necessary activities to stay up to date with their learning.

Finally, should we receive notice of a confirmed COVID-19 case at RCC the school community will be informed immediately. The school will then be closed for cleaning. The time this will take can vary from 1 – 5 days depending on a variety of factors. Once cleaned the school will then be directed by the Government as to when and how to reopen. During this time, we will be in clear and constant contact with our community through email and Facebook.

If you have any questions about any of these procedures of other concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the School Office.

Sincerely,
