Issue 7: Wednesday, 13th May 2020

FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK

Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members

As Term 2 progresses, I am delighted to report that our student attendance rate is steadily growing towards regular levels.  This week our attendance rate has reached 87% which is fantastic to have the majority of our children back at school engaging in face to face learning.  Our children who are still participating in home learning will continue to be supported by our classroom teachers.

I would like to take the opportunity to sincerely thank and congratulate all members of our school community for their ongoing support during this time.  We have obviously been in a period of constant change over the past couple of months and the response from our community has been nothing but very positive.  We genuinely have all been working together to ensure that our children’s and staffs’ best interests have been catered for.  THANK YOU!

The government is reviewing the conditions around school attendance this week and we expect a statement regarding the remainder of Term 2 to be announced by Friday.

REPORTING TO PARENTS CHANGES – SEMESTER 1

This is advanced notice to inform you that our Semester 1 reports will be different this year.  As a result of the disruptions that have occurred the School Curriculum and Standards Authority has reviewed the report format for this semester and will be confirming a new report format in the next few days.

GROUNDS AND BUILDINGS UPDATE

We are committed to the ongoing development of our school grounds and during the holidays we had new signage installed to enhance our school site.  In the coming weeks we are having:

·        The shade cloth on our shade house replaced with metal mesh, and

·        The veranda at the rear of the covered assembly enclosed to create storage for our seating that is used at assemblies.

TERM 2 SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT DAY

A reminder that our next School Development Day is on Friday, 29th May.  Children do not attend school on this day this will give our school community a four-day mid-term break.  Your cooperation with enabling this day is genuinely appreciated.

Have a wonderful fortnight.

Kind regards

Craig Ashby

Thank you for supporting the changed drop-off and pick-up arrangements.

Kindy and Pre-primary families please wait outside the gates until after 8:20am in the morning and 2:30pm in the afternoon before you enter the school grounds. Once you have dropped off or picked up your child, please leave the school grounds. If you have older children, please arrange to meet them outside the gates.

Year 1 – 6 families please drop your child at the gates and make arrangements for where you will collect them.

PLAYGROUNDS

Our playgrounds are being used only at lunch and recess and are cleaned between breaks. Please remind your children to leave the school grounds at the end of the day without playing on the playgrounds.

SCHOOL CHAPLAIN

The Covid-19 pandemic and the restrictions which have been put in place have impacted members of our school community in many ways. If you would like your child to chat with our school chaplain, Alison Purcell, please let their LA teacher or one of the deputies know. If you need support, either short of long term, please reach out to Alison or a deputy.

SECOND HAND UNIFORMS

We have a LARGE supply of second hand uniforms. Please let your child’s LA teacher, Mrs Simpson or Mrs Weir know if you need a uniform item for your child, especially as the weather is beginning to get colder.

SCHOOL SUPPLIES

As students transition back to school it is important they are equipped and ready to learn. We have a supply of stationery items donated by community members and Give Write. Please let your child’s teacher or the front office know if we can help.

LEAVING SCHOOL GROUNDS

If your child walks or rides to school, please make clear your expectations regarding going to school and coming home. Children should not be visiting the shops or going to friends’ houses on their way to school without your permission. Once at school, students cannot leave without being signed out by a parent or guardian.

CONTACTING YOUR CHILD DURING THE DAY

The Department of Education’s Student Mobile Phones in Public Schools policy took effect from the start of Term 1, 2020. This policy extends to student iPads being used as a mobile device.

“The policy requires all public schools to implement a ban on the use of mobile phones for all students from the time they arrive at school to the end of the school day. This extends to the use of smart watches which need to be on airplane mode during this period. The policy aims to reduce distractions in class and improve student engagement.

If students need to contact their parents/carers, they can do so through the school’s administration. Likewise, if parents/carers need to get a message to their children, they should call the school.”

https://www.education.wa.edu.au/mobile-phones

Student mobile phones and iPads with a SIM card installed must be handed in at the front office at the beginning of the day and collected at the end of the day. If your child needs to contact you to confirm they have arrived safely at school, please advise their LA teacher via Seesaw and arrangements will be made for this to occur without breaching the policy.

PARENTING TIPS

PARENTING TIPS

Why talking about school is important?

Talking with your child about the school day shows you’re interested in what’s going on in their life. This interest boosts their mental health, happiness and wellbeing. It can also have a very positive effect on your child’s behaviour and achievement. It shows your child that you value school and education, which encourages them to value it too.

Talking together about school also helps you get to know more about what’s expected of your child at school, how they learn and how they handle challenges. It can help you understand when they are feeling less interested in school or having problems.

When you’re in touch with your child’s feelings about school, you’re more likely to see problems before they get too big. This way you can work on overcoming challenges together.

And talking about school issues – like school projects or friendship problems – is also a great chance for you to express your family values about things like teamwork, respect for self and others, friendships, relationships, problem-solving and so on.

Strategies for talking about school with your child

Your child will probably be tired and hungry or thinking about other things when they first gets home. So easing the transition from school or after-school activities to home can help your child feel more like talking.

It’s best to avoid asking them lots of questions straight away. You can just let your child know that you’re glad to see them, and talk about non-school topics for a while. Younger children will probably also like unpacking their bags and going through any notes before you ask about school.

Saving questions about homework for later on can also take the pressure off!

Every afternoon or evening will be different. Even if your child usually likes to share their day with you, there’ll be days when they don't want to talk. Sometimes it’s a matter of sensing their mood and picking the right moment. Some days there might not be a right moment at all, and that’s OK.

Simple, positive and specific questions about parts of the day can get your child talking. For example:

·        •What’s the news from school today?

·        •What was fun?

·        •What did you like best at school today?

·        •What does your classroom look like at the moment?

·        •Who did you hang out with today?

·        •What subjects did you do today?

·        •What projects are you working on at the moment?
