Melrose Park Public School Newsletter

2022 Term 4 Week 5

Thank you Melrose Park community for all the support given as we celebrated the school's anniversary last Saturday. Blue skies and great sunshine brought many visitors to the school as we were finally able to celebrate 75 +2 years of public education.

Thank you to everyone who supported the activities of the P&C as they welcomed stall holders, performers and visitors to the school. Thank you everyone who volunteered for the day, whether on the bbq, cake stall, chocolate wheel, games area or trash n treasure. Thank you to the many families who gave donations and those who baked delicious treats for the cake stall.

Working together and supporting each other has made the day a wonderful memory.

Congratulations to Miss Mee and colleagues who organised and coordinated the anniversary presentations. Our visitors and ex-students commented on the wonderful displays, photos and information provided. Mrs Grover spent many hours interviewing ex- students and compiling many memories to store as archives for the school.

Early years

It was an honour meeting Rosalie who was a student in the early years of the school. Rosalie was chuffed to find her name in the Enrolment Book of 1945. She was thrilled to attend the event and shared so many memories of her school days.

Historical records

Many of the ex- students were thrilled to discover old documents and find their names in the Admissions and Discipline Books of the school.

Our current students were aghast when they read the Discipline Book to discover that children were given strokes of the cane for misdemeanors.

In times gone by

Our young students were fascinated by many of the items on display. One of the best items was discovering how a telephone worked.

How times have changed!

Family ties

It was a special moment for Elizabeth discovering her dad's name in the Admission Book. Many families came along to the anniversary with several generations of students reminiscing about events of their school days.

Precious memories

The most memorable part of my day occurred when an ex-student in the blue t-shirt, presented me with photos from his early days at school in the early 1960s.

Along came the man in the grey t-shirt. He took one look at the photo and exclaimed that he was in the photo in the middle row.  They had not seen each other since school days. It was wonderful to see the reunion of the men who were once classmates at Melrose Park.

Thank you P&C

Thank you to our wonderful team from the P&C who organised and coordinated the day.  Led by Nina and Steph, the efforts of our parent community to bring together the Melrose Park community for the first time in three years was sensational.  Thank you Kylie for organising the sale of the anniversary T- towel, Jess for her work as secretary and Noosha who discovered new skills in traffic control, everyone supported the team effort.

Special thanks go to the volunteers on the BBQ who prepared, cooked served and packed away. Your efforts are appreciated.

Our school enrolment is small and we rely on a mighty effort from our parent community to make our activities successful.  Thank you once again families for supporting the school, the parent body, the Melrose community and most importantly our wonderful students.

Planning for 2023

Thank you to those families that have reached out to notify us that your child will not be returning to Melrose Park next year. If you are aware that your child will not be returning next year, please email the office as soon as possible. As we begin our planning for 2023, it is important to gain accurate numbers.

If you have a child joining us next year or know someone in the community who has a child ready to start school next year and is yet to enrol,  we now have online enrolment.

Successful learners

Respect - positive behaviour

Respectful relationships start with being a good role model to our children.  Here are two strategies that adults can demonstrate that will support our childrens' attitudes towards others.

Model it

We have to be respectful ourselves. We probably think we are, but most of us can improve. Whether than means we ask more rather than telling, or we use our manners more, or speak more politely. The more respect we show, the more our children will learn what respect looks like and feels like. And they will copy us.

Get them out of BED and using their OAR

We can encourage them to get out of BED and have them use their OAR – that is, get them out of Blame, Excuse, and Denial, and get them showing Ownership, Accountability, and Responsibility. If they are disrespectful, don’t take their excuses. Don’t let them blame the other person. Refuse to accept their denial. Kindly, clearly, and directly help them to own it, be accountable for it, and make responsible decisions in the future.

Respectful relationships are a two-way street. And, to be frank, our children need some respectful guidance to stay on track. They don’t raise themselves. It takes effort. But as we get our relationships right with them, they begin to trust us and become open to our influence. Then, we experience the rewards of those respectful relationships.

Positive playgrounds

Student Voice voted on bringing back Playground Tokens as a way of promoting positive playground behaviour.

Tokens will be a awarded to students who are observed by teachers and student leaders playing nicely, speaking with respect, caring for the playground, looking after the equipment and other positive play with others.

Students who receive a token place the token in a special box. At the end of the week 10 student names will be drawn out. As their reward a special time with the principal such as a cooking session will occur.
