From the Principal

Dear Jamberoo Public School Community,

Dragon Boat Racing

What a great day was had by all who participated in the Dragon Boat Carnival last Saturday. A diverse crew consisting of staff, parents and ex-students represented Jamberoo Public School. The performance of the team, a very close second, was a fantastic advertisement for the school and it demonstrated that Jamberoo PS is a ‘small school making a big difference!’ Thank you to Sharon Behl-Shanks for coordinating and captaining the crew so successfully and a special thanks to the very small group of dedicated supporters who so enthusiastically cheered on the team throughout the day.

Young Leaders Day

What an amazing day at the Young Leaders Conference on Tuesday! The students who attended were inspired by all the speakers who told their life stories and the keys to successful leadership. The school leaders who attended were extremely well behaved and were fantastic representatives of Jamberoo Public School. The students left the conference centre inspired; wanting to be the best leaders they can be now and in the future. Thank you to Mrs Peade for attending the event with our school leaders.

Sports News

Hold the phone Jamberoo, we have some very exciting news! On Monday of this week, Nyasa Nakhate attended the South Coast Tennis Trials. Nyasa did extremely well on the day and was selected as a member of the South Coast tennis team. Nyasa will now travel to Albury on the 1st May and compete against the best tennis players across NSW. A fantastic achievement, Nyasa. The Jamberoo school community is extremely proud of you!

Congratulations go to Noah Egan, Jaxson Matthews and Windradyne Crockford who were recently selected to represent Tongarra PSSA in AFL. The boys will now travel to Goulburn to participate in the zone trials to be held on Thursday 16th March.

Both Imelda and Maebry Crockford will also represent Tongarra at the AFL zone trials to be held in Goulburn on Friday 17th March. Best of luck girls!

Last week, Lachlan Sail travelled to Nowra for the Tongarra and zone Soccer Trials. Lachlan did well on the day and was selected in the Tongarra team. He then trialled for the zone team, on the same day, and was unlucky not to be selected. Well done on your efforts, Lachlan.

This week Isla Burke and Sophia Mackay trialled for the Tongarra / Shoalhaven zone team. They have successfully made it through to the next round and will now be trialling for the South Coast team in Narawallee. Congratulations to both girls on their achievement so far!

Easter Raffle

Easter Raffle tickets are ready to sell. The Raffle will be held on the 6th April at the Easter Hat Parade. Money raised will go towards our stage 3 Canberra Excursion.

Stage 3 students: please don’t stop at one raffle ticket book. Come and collect more raffle books because the more tickets that are sold, the more the Canberra Excursion cost will be reduced.

High School Enrolment 2024 (Year 6 Families)

In NSW Government schools, moving from primary school to high school is called the 'Year 6 to Year 7 transition' or simply 'high school transition'.

If you would like your child to attend a government high school in 2024, you will need to complete an expression of interest for Year 6 to 7 transition. Alternatively, please complete the EOI by clicking on 'advise placement not required' if your child will not require a placement in a government high school next year. The expression of interest lets you indicate which school(s) you would like your child to attend in Year 7. After you submit this expression of interest and it has been assessed, your child will be offered a place at a government high school.

The online expression of interest process makes it easier and faster to see your child’s options for high school and nominate your preferences for next year.

Please note: The last day for submission is 31 March 2023.

To complete your child's 2024 high school expression of interest, please click on the link below:

https://year7.enrol.education.nsw.gov.au/?schoolCode=2218

Alternatively, you can access the EOI by entering the school's website, clicking on ENROLMENT at the top of the page and scrolling down and clicking on the MOVING TO HIGH SCHOOL link.

If you have any questions regarding the EOI online process, or would prefer a physical copy of the EOI booklet, please don't hesitate to contact the school on 42 360173.

Three-Way Conferences

The school will once again be conducting three-way conferences in Weeks 10 & 11 of Term One. The reason for conducting them in Term One is to provide teachers the opportunity to share with parents the strengths and areas for improvement of our students at the early stages of the year, rather than when reports go home at the end of Term Two. Parents will be provided with vital information about their child’s learning during the early stage of Semester One, which will assist in developing learning goals for their child and address the steps to achieving them.

Please keep an eye on Operoo over the next few weeks as teachers allocate days and times for three-way conferences to be conducted.

Minnamurra Lions Club

The P&C has been donated $1000 by the amazing crew at Minnamurra Lions Club for 2023. These funds have very generously been given to support Jamberoo students access all aspects of the curriculum. This may include, supporting families financially to assist students being able to attend excursions or camps and backing students to access educational resources to support their learning.

The school and the P&C very much appreciate the kind donation of the Minnamurra Lions Club. Please don’t hesitate to contact the school or the P&C this year if you believe your child/children will benefit from the funds.

Regards,

Mr Chris Speirs

JPS Dragon Slayers Slay

Our mighty squad of 20 staff, parents, ex-students, friends and family, took to Lake Illawarra last Saturday at the Shellharbour Festival of Sport. The earlier threatened rain made way and the wind dropped to bring on clear blue skies and perfect dragon boating conditions.

The blue singlets and cow caps made for an impressive sight as we paddled our way to the starting line. Sadly, that is where the impressiveness ended. Our first race saw team JPS sweeping to the right, 90 degrees from our intended finish line and a resounding third place was allocated to disappointed local team.

After that rocky start, JPS spirits were low and the 3 time champs' egos were definitely suffering a bitter beating. Fortunately, this was quickly turned around with the Dragon-slayers living up to their name over the next 2 heats, convincingly winning both of them. Our synchronised efforts on the lake meant we qualified for the major community final, with a shout out to our reliable team manager, Warwick.

The grand final was a hard fought battle, with 4 fast crews in contention. The echoing sounds of 'We love you 'cause you're from Jamberoo' from our supporters on the pier, egged us on. We knew what we had to do. The dragons surged forward, all eyes were 'in the boat', the 'strokes' kept a manageable pace, the drumming was solid, all pairs were finely tuned, our engine room was strong and our legendary sweep kept his eye on the target. We finished in second place, out-classed by just one second by our rivals, Mt Terry PS, and silver was ours.

Thanks to our amazing crew  - Janice, Maddie, Emma, Antonia, Lara, Tom, Callum, Rod, Chris, Daniel, Matt, Jack, Josh, Terri, Luke, Callum, Jacqui, Jo, Terri and Taryn. What a brilliant bunch of team-mates. Thanks also to our fabulous supporters, in particular Gracie, Zahli and India, and Mr Rod for his assistance transporting our marquees. We hope to see lots more supporters down on the pier in 2024 as we battle to bring the trophy home to the mighty JPS!

2024 Kiama High School Extension Class

2024 KHS Extension Class

In 2024, Kiama High School will be introducing an Extension class. This class will implement evidence-based procedures, programs and practices to develop skills and knowledge required for high performance in academic education.

It will offer students the opportunity to work together on challenging learning or skills development that may not be offered in a mainstream school setting.

The KHS Extension class will focus on evidence-based development programs to extend students, including:

Differentiation to meet the specific learning needs of high potential and gifted students

Cluster grouping to help concentrate differentiation efforts and provide students with opportunities to interact with others of like-mind, interest and ability

Enrichment and extra-curricular programs to increase the breadth and challenge of learning, as well as offer excellent opportunities for advanced learning.

Advanced learning pathways, including acceleration, offering students learning experiences beyond their age-based competency.

Curriculum compacting, in which some elements of the mainstream curriculum are ‘compacted’ so that they are covered in less time. The time saved can then be used for extension or enrichment activities.

Students’ achievement in the KHS Extension Class will be evaluated at the conclusion of each year to determine the suitability of their placement in this class for the following academic year.

Students can qualify for the Kiama High School Extension Class by completing an application, by sitting the AGAT (a general reasoning test, assessing students’ higher order thinking skills) and by submitting academic certificates.

Note that the questions in the test do not require any prior knowledge from any particular content area. Students are assessed on their ability to reason, make logical deductions, identify connections and spot patterns.

This test will be facilitated by Kiama High School in Term 1 for Year 6 students applying for entry to the 2024 Year 7 cohort and in Term 4 for Year 5 students applying for the 2025 Year 7 cohort.

Official registration for this test will open early Term 1, 2023. Information will be provided in your primary school newsletter early next year.
