FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK

Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members

QUIZ NIGHT

Last Friday night our P&C held the school’s annual Quiz Night as a fundraiser to support our school.  This was a wonderful night attended by over 100 people who participated in a range of fun activities to raise funds for the P&C Association.

On behalf of our school community I would like to thank Lauren Harry and the P&C Executive for their ongoing support of the school with special thanks and congratulations go to Lilly Separovich for her work as overall organiser of the night.  Lilly did an amazing job of coordinating the whole event which also included hosting it on the night and ensuring that it ran as smooth as possible.  Her hours and hours of work guaranteed that this occasion was highly successful and her hard work and efforts are appreciated by all in our school community!

A special thanks also goes to Mrs Weir for spending countless hours developing all of those brain teasing questions!  We also appreciate and acknowledge the dedication and effort of Mrs Stott, Mr Sweetman, Ms Johns, Mrs Fontaine and Mrs Slade who helped make this night a success.

WAGSM MUSIC CONCERT

In Week Three our school choir performed at the WA Government Schools Music festival at the Crown Theatre.  In short, our children were outstanding and performed their items superbly with genuine enthusiasm and an appropriate attitude.  They were an absolute credit to our school and their families.

My sincere thanks go to Ms Cheong, our senior choir conductor for her outstanding work and commitment to this aspect of our school.  Thanks also go to Ms Laverty for her support of this event.  Our choir is next performing at One Big Voice at the RAC Arena on Friday, 30 August.

BOOK WEEK 2019

Each year across Australia, the Children’s Book Council of Australia brings children and books together celebrating CBCA Book Week.  During this time schools, libraries, booksellers, authors, illustrators and children celebrate Australian children's literature and you will often see children's book character parades and talented librarians creating amazing displays.

At Bertram, our children are participating in a range of activities across this week to promote reading and the love of books.  As you can see from the photos below today’s Book Week parade was a wonderful event and our thanks go to all families who supported and assisted with children’s costumes across the school.

COMMUNITY CHAT

Our next Community Chat session is scheduled for this Friday, the topic will be Child Health and Well-being presented by Mr Myers.  Commencing at 8.45am in our staff room, I encourage all parents / carers to consider attending.

Have a wonderful fortnight.

INTERM SWIMMING

Swimming payments for Group 1 are now closed.  Payments for Group 2 are due by Monday, 2nd September.

MEDICATION

A gentle reminder to parents and caregivers that medication must be bought to the front office and an Administration of Medication form must be completed.  Learning Area teachers are unable to collect or administer medication. Thank you for respecting this process.

BOOK BORROWING AND STORYTIME IN THE LIBRARY

Reading books aloud to children stimulates their imagination and expands their understanding of the world.  It helps them develop language and prepares them to understand the written word.  Every Wednesday morning we have guest storytellers in the library, reading to students.  You are welcome to come in and borrow books to read at home with your child.  If there’s a book or series that you’re interested in borrowing, let Ms Layton know and she will find it for you!

OPEN NIGHT

Open Night is fast approaching.  This year it coincides with our Book Fair, so please take the time to visit your child’s class and the library to support the school.  We will have a range of food options available, including Food Tucks and a Sausage Sizzle between 5.00pm - 7.00pm.  This is not the time for a parent interview.  If you would like to discuss your child's progress or any other concerns, please arrange a time with their teacher.

UNEXPLAINED ABSENCES

We have no UNEXPLAINED ABSENCES for Term 1.  Well done!

For Term 2 and 3 over 750 students have no Unexplained Absences.  Now we need to get the remainder resolved.  Please get into the habit of providing a reason before your child is absent whenever possible.  A reason should be provided within 3 days of your child returning to school via:

  • Skoolbag
  • SeeSaw
  • SMS
  • Email
  • Note
  • Phone Call
  • Or by talking to their teacher or the front office.

PARENTING TIPS

Healthy eating and food messages for your child

Healthy eating habits start at home.  Giving your child healthy nutritious foods is important. It also helps to surround your child with messages about healthy eating habits and food. This can help your child make healthy food choices.

Here are some ideas:

  • Try to have a bowl full of fresh fruit within easy view and reach on the kitchen table or bench. You can offer fruit as a snack or if your child is still hungry after meals.
  • Stock your pantry and fridge with lots of healthy, nutritious options, and leave the sometimes food on the supermarket shelves.
  • Try to choose fruit and vegies of different colours, textures and tastes – the more variety there is, the more likely it is your child will find something they are interested in eating.
  • Get your child involved in planning and preparing meals. If your child has helped to make the meal, they are more likely to eat it.
  • Enjoy healthy meals together as a family as often as possible. Also look for opportunities to eat together at breakfast and on weekends.
  • Turn the TV off while eating. This way your child is paying attention to eating and the fresh healthy food choices you offer.
  • Read books that have healthy food messages for your child – for example, books with pictures of fruits and vegetables. Get your child to point out different types, colours, shapes and so on.
